Wanted more Adam Scott in my life so I watched his Netflix movie "Little Evil." I'm not gonna say it was a great movie, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to.

It does so very much right. Possibly the best zombie movie yet made.

Okay, I am not gonna link it due to the restriction on political discussion: But Weird Al's "America is Doomed: the Musical" take on the debate as an NYT video op-ed is absolute fire. Go watch it.

I felt called out by the first scene of Save Yourselves, as I was watching with one leg on Darcy's lap and a hand on my phone as she was juggling remotes trying to finalize the new TV setup.

Digimon Last Evolution Kizuna was really touching, especially as it's a series I grew up on. It concludes the original Digimon anime series.

Interestingly it's followed up with a TV anime reboot with the same characters. Kinda like Evangelion Rebuild (though the latter may be a direct sequel where the world was remade)

A friend gifted us with a stereo receiver after hearing we had one on the wishlist. Our living room surround sound is now connected to the Xbox and media center PC and is wonderful. Rewatching Fate Grand Order: Babylonia has been greatly improved with all of the noble phantasms sounding boss.

So, I started watching Invincible. At minute five I was ready to give up on it, thinking "ugh, yet another piece of lazy writing with Superman as a villain" but the thing is too well done to put down, grimdark nonwithstanding. I'm on volume two, and so far its seems like a new iteration of the experiment that was Pax Americana (but with off-brand expies... which would liken it more to Watchmen, but I don't want to use that comparison since similarities end there). This time, the premise is

"what if Krypton sent people to other planets to invade them Sayian-style?"

(not really a spoiler since tells start real early on and it's fully declared before volume 1 ends but eh).

On that note, if you liked Madoka, you'll like Wonder Egg Priority (made by the same team sans Kajiura). It's several levels of fucked up.

Anyhoo Kane Pixel's Backrooms- Found Footage and related series is pretty good, apparently he's off to direct a movie because of how well received it was.

The movie "Alienoid" has kung fu wizards in it.

It is to dumb fun kitchen sink action adventure movies what Marvel movies wish they were.

And while it may be stupid it doesn't think its audience is all that stupid. Without spoilers I refer to the suit, the hand gun and the mute house maid as proof it appreciated that the audience might be paying attention, thinking about things, and using that to deliver some real moments.

A pity about the CGI space robots front loading. But it can't all be good.

It sure as hell was a better sci-fi action part 1 than god damn poor mans Dune.

A friend recently refered me to Gundam: The Witch From Mercury. It starts as your tired, average school drama, but give it a chance, it has a similar narrative structure to My Hime/My Otome: It starts lighthearted but only remains stupid long enough to ease you and sell you out on the premise, then the heavy/gundam stuff starts, and starting the second half, it's wham line after wham line.

Yup. It's great.

Here's a brief summary of the gonzobonkers plot, and I'm not making any of this up:

"After time traveling cyborg jail wardens lose control of the tentacled alien prisoners they've been containing in human brains, their accidentally adopted daughter must team up with a bumbling 14th century wind magic sorcerer who has a pair of shape shifting housecat Kung fu minions and later an older bickering couple of rival traveling magical item salespeople in an to attempt to set things right."

That shit is almost insane as the ghost stories dub but at least it makes sense in and off itself.

Scavengers Reign is what every single old style lost on an alien planet sci-fi B movie desperately desired to be in it's deepest unrealized fantasies.

Since it is good, sci-fi, animated, and I'm pretty sure originates on one of the failing potatoes that pass for a streaming media platform... I predict no pick up for a second season... it being eaten by the endless streaming platform wars without anyone noticing... then it will have a small cult following in about 5 years and never be revived.

I watch a lot of Westerns. But there are a SO SO SO many from any decade you care to name. And while some are downright classics (like High Noon) mostly they're not particularly sophisticated or complex. As Jane Campion recently said, "The west is a mythic space and there's a lot of room on the range." Some of the appeal comes from watching different people mix some of those same ingredients in different ways, but they never really have to sit down and explain the setting.

In any case, the other day I watched 'Day of the Outlaw' from 1959. It came out the same year as the John Wayne Western Rio Bravo (which I also quite like, with Dean Martin taking a turn as an alcoholic hitting rock bottom), and I was expecting something along similar lines. Most of the Westerns from the 50s don't deal with a lot of introspection and it's manly men being manly and saying slick one-liners like 'Fill your hand you sunnuvabitch!' (actually spoken a decade later when Clint Eastwood and Italian directors had already remade the Western), but the point still stands. In the 50s, you sorta expect a black-and-white morality and more often than not it's the white-men who are good and someone of color is the bad guy. It's not always the case, but it's rare that I'd bother going on record advocating on behalf of a movie from such an era that's not just foreign but actually repugnant to a lot of modern audiences.

This is one such movie.

The movie is shot in black and white, set in a small town in a Wyoming winter surrounded by deep drifts of snow. Cinematically you can see a clear line of descent to Quentin Tarantino's Hateful Eight. I hadn't heard him reference the movie, but apparently he has mentioned it as an influence. Source (includes spoilers for the plot of Day of the Outlaw).

What made me most curious to see it was that Burl Ives plays the leader of a band of outlaws. Most of us probably know Burl Ives as the snow-man narrator of the 1964 claymation classic 'Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer'. You might also know him as the singer of 'Holly Jolly Christmas', and he's known for being a holly-jolly-fat-man much more than a cold-hearted n'er-do-well. In any case, there's more to the story - before any outlaws arrive the town is boiling over with conflict between ranchers and farmers (keeping the range open versus fencing in), and romantic peccadilloes under the surface. But all that gets set aside when confronted with an outside threat. This also reminded me a little of Cowboys vs. Aliens - the aliens sort of show up in the middle of a conflict between the Sheriff and a wealthy rancher (Harrison Ford).

I won't give any more spoilers, just share the IMDB 'back of the DVD' style summary: Blaise Starrett is a rancher at odds with homesteaders when outlaws hold up the small town. The outlaws are held in check only by their notorious leader, but he is diagnosed with a fatal wound and the town is a powder keg waiting to blow.

I was going to put the Claymore anime on this list, but the ending, and a few episodes before the ending, really lowered the tone, dragging out fights and putting constant flashbacks to previous eps.

Claymore was so fucking good for the first part, right up until the totally sweet flashback with an incredibly entertaining and engaging fight, and then I felt it got dragged down by boring shonen bullshit. I still finished it for some reason, but all the episodes where it was just "oh no an even stronger person is coming/here!" made it so I can't really recommend it to people. A neat world, good animation, and characters I liked, but fuuuuuuuck I wish I had skipped a good 5-6 episodes.

The only good part towards the end is the "oops, my hand slipped" moment. Laughed out loud at that bit.
