Alright, Fringe gets major props for this:
Image
The whole Over There arc was I think kind of weak. The story didn't really go anywhere and they dropped characters halfway through for no discernible reason. But the things of "Hey look! It's an alternate universe so things are slightly different!" stuff the art department did was epic.

friend who wants to learn D&D wants her character to be a hermaphrodite...

...the dmpc barbarian has Trapsense.

I find this inordinately amusing

I don't get the point of hermaphroditic D&D characters, and yet it was a big deal on early MUDs. Like, why?

Also, a person with male genitalia and female secondary features isn't a 'hermaphrodite'. And I still dislike the slang, it's rather rude. Although slightly less offensive than shemale, I guess. If only for being a shorter, more innocuous word.

I haven't seen fringe since like season 1 episode 8/9. The X-file macguyver business became too kitschy for me. Has that gotten any better, Frank?

The Superman returns logo is kick ass though.

people that play hermaphrodite characters, at least the ones I know, actually have hermaphrodite characters.

and I don't get the big deal either, but whatever.

what slang are you talking about exactly?

I think she means that a trap isn't intersexed. Or that a hermaphrodite isn't a shemale.

Okay, I'm just going to say it. Can we quit with the derogatory slang, please?

Hey Crissa. What derogatory slang is a legitimate question.

I think you mean "trap" what's his name is confused.

But you totally just called "hermaphrodite" slang two posts ago. So you haev to actually explain what you mean, because hermaphrodite is not slang, for anything, at all. Even a little bit.

Crissa; are you by chance talking about it in the sense as Herm-Aphrodite (like venus) or do you just take offense to hermaphrodite?

Aside from transgendered, what would you prefer? I'm curious. obviously shemale is derogatory and I can see herm(A)phrodite being derogatory but I guess I don't know enough to see just hermaphrodite be derogatory.

Explain, please.

You're inferring I called hermaphrodite slang, which I did not. I just didn't use the derogatory term. There aren't any hermaphrodite humans in real life - it just doesn't work that way.

Please don't be dense. It's really off-putting. I thought you guys were supposed to be smart, not asses.

Please don't use the derogatory terms trap or shemale with these meanings.

If you want to talk about porn, then shemale or dick-girl is fine. If you're talking about people or characters in a story or real people - not so fine. If you can't figure out which is which, just don't use these words.

"Historically, the term hermaphrodite has also been used to describe ambiguous genitalia and gonadal mosaicism in individuals of gonochoristic species, especially human beings."

It's actually not incumbent on the rest of the world to please you. If someone chooses to use those words in an appropriate context, then it doesn't matter if you can tell it's appropriate or not, because you are not more important than reality.

I'm not sure that trap or shemale is any more or less appropriate in porn (or stories about dick girls), but I am sure that you not knowing the context doesn't make it less appropriate than it would be.

It's about respect and propriety. Camwhores on 4chan and pornstars are traps or dickgirls, real people are transgendered or just trans. You don't go around calling trans people shemale and tranny for the same reason you don't call gay people [EDITED] or black people [EDITED] or coons or whatnot.

umm.... ok, Crissa, "Trap" is a meme. It can be used derogatorily, or humourously, or hell, even affectionately. And pretty much anyone who looks like a female but has a dick can be regarded as a trap, that's what the meme was created for. So whether they're a crossdressing guy, a transgendered person, or an actual hermaphrodite, the term applies.

should I ever find myself in a physical shape such that I would consider actually crossdressing from time to time, I wouldn't mind close friends using "trap" as a term of affection or endearment, in fact I'd kind of take it as a compliment, since "traps" are specifically very convincing crossdressers. This is just like how I don't mind, and even kind of appreciate being called an asshole, I don't see it as a necessarily negative thing.

Also... what precisely did you think I was talking about? I was amused that an npc that would be dealing with a pc had an ability that, taken out of context, could lead to some absurd and hilarious shit. Like if the illegitimate heir of a king winds up polymorphed into a sword, and I had a character with proficiency in "Bastardswords".

I swear... some people take all the fun out of things....

I agree, Crissa. Whenever I hear homosexuals being referred to as "queer" or "gay", my blood boils. How could anyone have the insensitivity to use slang to refer to a person's sexuality?

I prefer the term "intersex" to "hermaphrodite" when talking about real people, because it is more descriptive of what humans actually have. However, this is a fantasy game and the woman in question probably wants to have two sets of functional reproductive organs. At which point, "hermaphrodite" would be the more correct word. That's a condition that is almost impossible to find in a real human, but we are totally talking about a fantasy game, and if people want to play dick girls for whatever reason, they can.

Crissa: even if I am being dense, just refusing to even use the words in an educational context to teach them (me, whatever) about what is appropriate is retarded. Don't call people out on what you think is wrong if you don't try to correct it or help them out (especially when they did ask you for help.)

Don't you mean completely impossible?

The player's probably just trying to powergame, being able to attach magic rings to her character's scrotum AND wear a Brassiere of Rocksauce.

... actually, that's a pretty good idea. I'm going to do that from now on. Such items haven't come up yet, but a real min-maxxer always grabs more power for free. :hatin:

No. I mean almost impossible. In biology, almost nothing is completely impossible.

We aren't chickens, so you can't just graft some cells with male DNA to some cells with female DNA and get functional male and female parts on different parts of the body. Each piece of gonadal tissue develops into functionality at the behest of hormones - hormones that circulate in the blood. So you'd think that even in the case of genetic mosaicism and partial duplication where someone has two sets of gonads, that the hormones would still have a sword fight and one or the other would win and only one (or none) of the gonad sets would actually take hold. And normally, you'd be right.

However, there exist mutations that deny cells androgen receptors, and people who have those mutations develop into pretty sexy looking women even if they are males. And those mutations are governed on a cell by cell basis - like a chicken. So if you had a genetic mosaic which was predominantly female with an androgen receptor knock-out and the other cell line included an exogenous gonad duplication and was itself male, then you would indeed make a large breasted woman with functional uterus who nonetheless had a penis and a set of testicles.

Not going to happen, but it's possible. In Biology, almost everything is possible.
