Don't blame the game because your friends suck.

I think someone needs to write or find the old article on playing as a group. What it means when you do something to the other players, and how to interact with other players to make sure the entire group is playing the game and not a few people with the rest sitting on the sidelines. I don't think it was in Dragon, maybe White Dwarf or Polyhedron from around the early 80's?

If you are outclassed because the other players, then that is a personal problem as well a group problem.

I am not really following your gripe here other than the people you play with suck, and you want to blame the game because others are a jerk to you during the game.

Why is someone a jerk because their character outclasses yours mechanically, but you are not a jerk for being a screen-hogging attention whore?

The people who frequently want to "try" things often fall into the second camp. They're the ones that selfishly want to waste everyone's time as they describe some Rube Goldberg idea, to do what the rogue could do with a skill check or the wizard with a spell, while everyone else at the table wants to get on with their lives.

When you try and stop them and point out that what they want to do is indeed covered by the rules, and oh hey, let's go ahead and use those rules, then they get sulky because that's not exactly what they were really trying to describe and, besides, the way the rules are written makes their character suck at the action described.

What is with the idea that the person who comes up with the idea needs to be the one who is best able to implement it?

I always found the jerk to be the DM, who wants their rube-goldberg to happen, and not have to explain it. And then I'm supposed to be a good roleplayer and play my role without knowing what my role really is.

I can't roleplay that there are crocs in the lake and that I ought to be scared of them - if I don't know they're there.

The jerk is the one who thinks the game revolves around them. Like those people that wanted to reduce the cleric to a walking med-kit when he could do much more. The mechanics are only their to give some structure to the roleplaying. To do those things which you cannot for your character.

Some like for the rogue to pick all the locks and open all the doors, others like the party to work together so they can try. Not picking the rogue class, doesn't mean you didn't want to do some things it may specialize in.
Play the game, not the rules.

Depends on if the doors are when the rogue is supposed to shine.

The rogue unlocks the door, the fighter kicks it in, the wizard casts fireball or color spray.

But the wizard could've done all that himself. That would be problemsome.

Depends on what the wizard is doing and if he is trying to be the one man party, or working with the group.

Fuck him over and throw Elminster as an NPC.

I've seen this happen way too many times. I've had one player in games I've run in the past that would to this all the time. He considered himself a powergamer, but I realized that he had no real understanding of the rules, and his idea of being a powergamer was that he'd make batshit crazy suggestions to DMs who'd play everything fast and loose, and later decry his character as "broken". He never tried anything crazy with me, but he always wanted weird little extra effects by describing his attacks; things like getting a free trip or bullrush or something because of the angle he swung his weapon. Or blinding people by hitting them in the face with a sunrod.

Basically, he'd slow the game down constantly by asking questions to see what he could get away with, while the rest of the players were perfectly content making flavorful characters within the context of the rules and playing the game we'd all agreed to play.

Yeah, the rules say you should get away with some of that stuff.

But it should be pretty hard... To hit someone in the face specifically?
