Doc-> Late, but thanks for asking. Couldn't really play due to scheduling issues AND because my Dom3 is very rusty (you took like 6 months to finish the last draft! :P)

Also, I see what K is trying. Crafty.

Um... what is K trying? And is it better than

I'm absolutely astonished that no-one took Ermor.

I'll make a draft version of the mod for people to test today.

K is doing a Monkey Bless Rush now with actual recruitable H3s.
Bandar Log has excellent build-anywhere sacreds and low-level sacred summonables who kick ass. Unfortunately they have access to only weak priests outside of their Prophet and some higher level Summons. The addition of a build-anywhere caster of divine bless lets them raid effectively instead of not being able to do that.

On the archery side, Bandar Log has a lot of bow options but no Fire magic. The addition of the Grand master turns those bandar into flaming longbows in the mid game. And since he has Inquisitors for blessing, the Kinaras can be used for Wind Guide.

It synergizes with the gandharva army and with the bandar archers. To a lesser extent, it even synergizes with the elephants as access to strong priests pumps up the elephant morale.

Now look at it from the other perspective: what does Marignon want? Well, Marignon needs a source of Clams if they are going to do their late game Angelic Assault, and Marignon wants a move-2 arrow catcher that can keep up with their crossbowmen for early expansion. Done (Yakshini) and Done (White One).

They don't add a lot of Magic Diversity (before the national summons come in, they are both low diversity and they have 4 points of overlap). But it's a lot of functional synergy.

Oh, yeah. But if you want a pretender from your first nation, you have to tell me which one because otherwise the mod file will be a complete mess.

In case anyone cares, I'm taking a Lord of Rebirth.

I honestly don't think Ermor would have been that good given the first picks of most players. Free chaff is nice, but Ermorian chaff requires expensive H3 priests spending their turns summoning said chaff when there are other things you can do with them.

Most of the other combos I "get" (Except TC / Pan... that's looking to be a nation in the middle of its own civil war ad this is the one case where Ermor may be a better 2nd pick) but as Frank already outlined, K's nations were very subtly synergistic.

The one combo that I'm really a bit worried about is Jotun / Man. I have an inkling of why those two got married, but I'm not saying else Frank may kill me :P.

To be honest, I'm kind of surprised by everyone's picks except Korwin.

The only real synergy pick was Korwin who added blood hunters to a good blood spell list and heavy troops to a nation that sorely needed arrow catchers. No archers, but I guess you can't have everything.

Frank did add longbows to a nation of all heavy troops, but otherwise everyone else went for magic diversity picks. Adding Ry'leh for illithids or Pangaea for manikin summons is cute, but not terribly interesting. Everyone snatched up the Blood nations, but only Korwin seems to have a real strategy. The extreme-temp scale nations also got picked.

Ermor was only ever going to be a good pick with a cheap H3 nation, but no one grabbed one of those in the first round who didn't have a better pick open.

Diversity spreads are ok, but I'm still iffy about TC / Pan which doesn't really do that much diversity and runs a bit contrary to each other.

The main "hidden" thing about TC is that it's a research powerhouse. Just plop down a Fort, and mass-produce Ministers of Magic which give you very good research

The problem is that Pan wants Turmoil to get Maenaeds, which means much less gold for building forts which power the TC research powerhouse.

By contrast, I think TC / Ermor would have been stronger. Ermor's problem early on is that it's busy building H3 priests in its capital, which in turn are too busy reanimating to do research. By giving the nation powerful non-capital research, you can get past Ermor's early research woes much more easily. That, and Ermor gets strong Death which TC lacks.

i'm assuming that Tien Chi/Pan isn't going Turmoil and isn't doing Maenads at all. They grabbed Pan for the Pandemoniac and heavy troops. The Freespawn army is going to be made out of 100% Vine Dead and 0% Maenads because Tien Chi doesn't really need to make a lot of Pans to back up their armies with powerful magic. Good archers and powerful rainbow magic are being backed up by a strong Blood suit, a late game undead horde, and Minotaurs. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Yep. I've been swamped with work and social calendar the last several days but I'm hoping to post the mod and get the start-position draft started by this weekend.

Would anyone object to making the map slightly larger? I'm having trouble spacing the start locations such that they're at least 2 provs between each pair and such that each has at least 4 neighbors both - I'm sure I'll get a map that works eventually it's just time-consuming to dink with it.

I could just make a map. Either clock face or wrap-around, I don't care. We have no water players, so it's no big deal to make a map that is vaguely symmetric.

Frank - please do. I said clockface at the beginning but wrap around would of course be better.

I've got all this weird political stuff to deal with at work now, it's just exhausting.

Thanks,
DrP

Can we just do clockface? Wrap-arounds are just too much gang-banging and not enough tactics for my taste.

Am I the only one who likes mountain-heavy maps?

*facepalm*.

I had totally forgotten about the sub-dreadful admin in MA Caelum's capital. Oy, I should've gone Ermor instead like my inner demons wanted.
