More nerds obsessing over irrelevant shit

(Spoilers about Portal blah blah blah like you care)

Merlynn wrote:
What's really funny is when you apply your Junior G-Man sleuthing skills.

Consider this: Your character awakens in the testing facility. No memories of who she is or how she got there. If you look in a portal at yourself, you'll notice the odd devices on your legs. This, obviously,is what makes it so you don't die from fall damage. And,further, consider that your character can recover from ANY damage she sustains provided she doesn't take too much and is given a little time.

Consider also: The "hints" and "secret areas" you find on the testing course. Even above and beyond the scope of the "official" course. Think about it. The rest of the course is spotless while the "behind the scenes" areas are in varying states of decay. Obviously,GlaDOS CAN clean up the course. But she leaves these clues. Why? Further, the very existence of the clues themselves prove SOMEONE ran the exact same route you are. What happened to them? Why,and in some cases, how, did they go back and leave these clues? Frankly,if GLaDOS had escapes before, why didn't she take steps to prevent them in future? If she really wanted to kill you, wouldn't she have made the whole incinerator room you were supposed to burn to death in portal proof? And where were the bodies? There's plenty of blood, but no bodies. Not in the secret areas, not in the observation areas, nothing. Not even limbs or crawled up in a crawl space.

Further, consider: In the ending song, she talks about how you broke her heart and acts like she's filling out a testing report. Further, she mentions more tests,on "the people who are still alive",and that she's "still alive". She mentions asking Black Mesa for help, even though she claims it's a joke. Why would you leaving "break her heart",especially since she's been trying to kill you for almost the whole game?

My conclusion: The whole thing WAS a test. But they weren't testing the gun. They were testing YOU. Your character was altered to become a "super soldier" after the Black Mesa incident brought about the invasion from Xen. With the Combine winning the war,the scientists at Aperture Science realized they had to do something. So,combining their portal gun with a test subject who was made to withstand falls from great height (the most common hazard with portals) and to recover from any damage, they laid the ground work for the ultimate infiltration specialist. You. Setting GLaDOS to oversee the work on subject, followed by testing, they then abandoned the lab and went into hiding as best they could.

When your character is completed and awakens,GLaDOS runs the test. Complete with a twist, finding out if you can "make it on your own",and the final test,GLaDOS herself. Or so she'd have you THINK! The truth is,what you fought was a mock up. The whole test was rigged from the start. And it tested everything. You're landing ability. Your problem solving skills. You ability to make maximum use of the all the portal gun's abilities. And your ability to regenerate. Even from a state of seeming death. That's right. Your character CAN'T die. GLaDOS couldn't kill you if she wanted to. Not permenantly, away. When you "died" in the game, your body was just pulled to a safe zone where it regenerated. You were never in any real danger.

And this is what broke GLaDOS' heart. She wasn't an insane lesbian computer. She was a mother who had to be very hard on her daughter and then let her go out into the big bad world to make her own way. Which is hard for any parent to do. Most just don't have to use a rocket launcher when it comes up.

Thanks for reading.

Crissa at [unixtime wrote:1192920911[/unixtime]]Sales team and Printing team wanted it, because printing three books at once is more expensive than one book at a time: You have to schedule more machines. It's an exponential cost.

Also, stores prefer to have their sales spread out over time, more trips in and out, etc. Makes them more money, and they have more time to do all the work of checking in the product.

It's actually a bad idea to send three $40 products out all at once. They will sell less product total.

-Crissa

Right, thats the usual line of thought (and what they did with 3rd), which makes it hard to understand why the Sales team changed their mind and decided to go with the simultaneous release. It was all worked out and scheduled the other way, and aside from the usual minority of whiners on the WotC boards, it wasn't a big deal.

But now Sales have suddenly come back and said they want to do it in (what appears to be) a less profitable manner. Thats just... fucked up. So someone else has to be leaning in and putting pressure on the situation, and I'm at a loss as to who that would be.

The reasonable explanation that presents itself is that the PH won't be ready in May, and they're banking on the extra month to get it done. There may be another explanation, but I don't see a reasonable one that would convince the Hasbro bean-counters to change to a release model thats generally considered less profitable.

I do like what they did with a lot of the weapons, just summing up a variety there. One player in a game specified she wanted a Claymore, but couldn't find any in the rules.

"Greatsword."

She was fine with that. Though I do recall 2Ed having pages upon pages of Guisarm-Voulges and Carbine Swiss Army Glaives.

I solved this problem by only making 3 types of armor light, medium and heavy. how the stuff is made and what it looks like is only flavour so I left it there

I made 'modular armor' that has weight and skill penalty dependent upon the amount of 'armor ranks' a person wears.
The inspiration came from an old AD&D 2e rules insert, either published or house rules I can't recall, about piecemeal armor created from fractions of other sets. It was sloppy (since it was based on AD&D rules) yet fascinating since you could actually slap a shoulder cover and a single leg plate on to get some bonuses rather than a shield.
My concept will be posted when formatted for forum.

Maybe I should make a list of projects and prioritize them; Feybook, monster abilities as feats list, making a new Sorcerer (hey, who doesn't?), and this piecemeal armor concept.
Question is, which is more important... and so I avoid prioritizing.

I'm feeling lazy, so here's ENworld's thread on the Dragonlance movie trailer. The thread isn't so bad, but the trailer itself...
http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t ... [br][br]Oh, man is that bad shit. The animators from the D&D cartoon got together with a couple freshmen computer animation majors and made a steaming pile of straight-to-DVD shit.

Lucy Lawless as fvcking Goldmoon? Thats hilarious in its own right. At least they are keeping the quality consistent, even 20 years later.

Oy, their website is made by a computer (not 'on' a computer):

http://www.dragonlance-movie.com/moviefaq/faq22.asp

Points for twenty ads that don't have anything to do with the content. Extra points for the article without a link to what it's talking about it. Super double content for the popup 'search' window link that searches a random term on the internet.

Microsoft is full of lose.

Oh, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHrOfJ8_D0o - apparently they can't afford a real trailer. The first third is logos. It was made in Toonz? I didn't know Toonz could make something so bad...

The stupid is hurting me. For some reason the clear bit of text (That they actually quote) is completely invisible to them.

Though I think I fell off the curb when the rogue blew 5 feats to get Whirlwind attack.

Okay, so the Whirlwind Rogue is a silly design.

...But the question is what happens with the half-round surprise round, and when combat starts. (I suppose the 'Landing is a Move Action was also a question)

I always thought it was weird we had the surprise round mechanic and the you're flat footed until your initiative in normal combat mechanic.

That Rogue, if Human, must be around level 12. I don't think he'll have any problem with those orks, surprised or not.

Still, why is he dropping down where they can all hit him, instead of just throwing flasks of acid from safety?

Regardless of how terribly the rogue is built or played the original point of the topic is dead wrong. Whether or not the rogue gets a surprise round he can still sneak attack all the orcs if he wins initiative. The rules are exceptionally clear but quite a few of those idiots can't seem to grasp that.

I'm curious, can anyone here think of a situation where getting a surprise round is somehow a bad thing?

Sure. Happens pretty frequently.

If you get a good initiative score and most of your enemies are not surprised, and only one (or a small minority) of them are surprised, then the fact that there is a surprise round just fucked you in the ass. You get a single standard action, then most of your opponents pop out of surprise, then you go to normal initiative and you cry real man tears.

The surprise round rules are bullshit. It actually encourages you to keep your familiar in a sensory deprivation tank so that you're never in the situation where you spot the enemy, they win initiative, and then get a full round attack on you while you are flat footed.

I'm not following you; when you surprise one of your enemies out of a bunch, you and your non-surprised enemies get one standard action in the surprise round while the surprised enemy does not. Following this initiative is re-rolled, or just the surprised enemies now roll initiative and put themselves in the proper order, I'm not sure how that works and I don't much care. Since nobody is considered to have actually taken an action, at least that seems to be how I remember surprise rounds working, they're all still flat-footed and if you win initiative you can still sneak attack them. So unless I'm, quite possibly, misremembering that everyone's still considered flat-footed even if they've acted in a surprise round, I don't see how getting a surprise round where some of your enemies get to act too is necessarily a bad thing.

The only downside I can see here is if you rolled high initiative for surprise and low for regular combat, and that's more of a luck thing.

I'm not following you

I gathered that. Open your hymnal (the DMG) to page 22 and start reading until you reach the end of page 23 or you start crying. I think I can see the specific places you are confused about the rules:

when you surprise one of your enemies out of a bunch, you and your non-surprised enemies get one standard action in the surprise round while the surprised enemy does not. Following this initiative is re-rolled, or just the surprised enemies now roll initiative and put themselves in the proper order, I'm not sure how that works and I don't much care.

Initiative is not re-rolled. The people who don't act in the surprise round get to roll iniative after you guys get your standard actions.

However, the important part is that once you've acted during a combat, you aren't flat footed anymore. So in the case where there is one enemy unaware, you get one standard action, then all the aware enemies get a standard action and they are not flat footed!. The part where you seem to be treating the surprise round as a separate combat where everyone resets to being flatfooted at the end - that's not accurate. Nor is it a fix to anything, as that would mean that it would frequently be in your interest to not surprise an enemy fighter so long as you weren't surprising an enemy Rogue.

---

So to make the moronic example actually show the problems with the surprise round instead of just making shit up:

Our hero is standing in the rafters, he intends to take a five foot step into open space and fall down dramatically into a group of enemies and whirlwind attack. Because he's a 10th level Rogue who took Whirlwind Attack as his bonus feat and he's got enough ranks in tumble and jump to do this without rolling dice.

Version 1: All Enemies Surprised
He lands amongst them and gets a standard action attack, stabbing the biggest enemy for a sneak attack. Then he wins initiative (because he's a 10th level rogue) and whirlwinds, with each attack being a sneak attack.
Victory!

Version 2: No Enemies Surprised
He wins initiative and lands amongst the enemy. Then he whirlwinds, with each attack being a sneak attack. Almost as good as version 1.
Victory!

Version 3: One Enemy Surprised
He wins initiative and landds amongst them, getting a standard action attack which is a sneak attack. Then five of the six remaining enemies get their actions and pummel the crap out of our hero. Then the next round happens and the last enemy rolls initiative, which is also less than our hero, so our hero whirlwinds, with only one attack being a sneak attack. Then the five remaining enemies beat the tar out of him some more.
Defeat!

It's that simple. The Surprise Round rules are completely fucked. They are completely arbitrary and make it frequently worse to surprise some of your opponents than to surprise none of them. The moral of the story is that if you want to dramatically drop down intot he middle of enemies from the rafters like Batman, that you should first stand dramatically and make a soliliquoise so that you're sure they all know you are there before combat starts.

Ah yes, so I did misremember about surprise rounds effectively not counting for the purposes of being flat-footed at the beginning of combat, I thought that might've been it.

I did manage to figure out the rest on my own before that incorrect piece of information kept asserting itself into my train of thought.

Part of the problem comes from this-
SRD wrote:Flat-Footed

At the start of a battle, before you have had a chance to act (specifically, before your first regular turn in the initiative order), you are flat-footed. You can’t use your Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) while flat-footed. Barbarians and rogues have the uncanny dodge extraordinary ability, which allows them to avoid losing their Dexterity bonus to AC due to being flat-footed.

A flat-footed character can’t make attacks of opportunity.

That wording more or less suggestions that the surprise round is irrelevant. You somehow should go back to being flat-footed at the beginning of the first real round of a combat. I'm not sure why that word 'regular' is in that sentence, but it confuses the hell out of things.
It would actually be more clear if the parenthetical aside wasn't there at all.

I knew I had read something to make me think that the surprise round didn't effect flat-footedness in the normal combat rounds.
