The Difficulty in RPGs thread

It is actually better for Fuchs just to quit elaborating on his position. The more he talks about it the less sense he makes. He says he plays for years, which means that he would be an asshole to someone for years just because their character might die at some point. He plays for years but yet can fathom spending time integrating a new character into an ongoing game despite how much time he'd definitely have the time to do it. He plays for years but doesn't actually know how often, or how likely someone is to die in his campaigns. The more he reveals about his position the shakier it gets and the more questions it raises about what experiences he could've had that made him become ok with being a dick to people who earnestly just want one of many failure states to be an option.

This is incorrect. "*Batteries not included." (the warning label, not the movie), does not indicate that the device is broken when purchased, just that it is incomplete and accessories are required to make it function that are not included.nockermensch wrote:D&D ships as a broken game, and has done so since its beginning.
in the case of D&D, that would be the player's wishes of EACH game being played and what they want to make of the game at hand.
It would be more correct to state that: D&D ships as an incomplete game.

Play the game, not the rules.

... which is one of the things that make it broken. it doesn't use batteries, because it's a wind-up. it's missing the winding handle.shadzar wrote: D&D ships as an incomplete game.
well, that, and the fact that they try to be all things to all people -- which never works.
they don't tell you it's broken, because they'd never get that shit past the marketing department (and for good reason).
*WARNING*: I say "fuck" a lot.

maybe WotC doesnt tell you D&D is incomplete, but TSR did with EVERY edition. in some cases with the exact words "THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE GAME", or "THESE 'RULES' ARE NOT COMPLETE", and then went on to explain why it said that. though most people just ignored anything that wasnt rules specific to tell them how to play, and failed to realize WHAT they were playing.wotmaniac wrote:... which is one of the things that make it broken. it doesn't use batteries, because it's a wind-up. it's missing the winding handle.shadzar wrote: D&D ships as an incomplete game.

i THINK WotC put something to that effect in 3rd somewhere that the game rules werent fully complete, but it got removed quick. Maybe it was in an intro to 3rd in Dragon or something, but i dont feel like digging those out as they are issues above #250.
