Daughters have become more desirable as education and jobs for women have become the norm. Some countries have some catching up to do, but it's something that's been changing very quickly.

Also note that in countries like India, dowry customs play a significant part in not wanting girls.
As the Child marriages (both bride and groom are young) were prevalent in India, the brides parents offer dowry to the grooms family in the form of money and materials. This is in order to help support the livelihood of the bride until groom grows up to support her himself. The opposite of this is called Kanyashulkam.

In India dowry (known as Dahej in Hindi)[16] is the payment in cash or some kind of gifts given to bridegroom's family along with the bride. Generally they include cash, jewellery,[17] electrical appliances, furniture, bedding, crockery, utensils and other household items that help the newly-wed set up her home.

In India the dowry system has been putting great financial burden[18] on the daughters family. It has been one of the reasons for families and women in India resorting to sex selection [19] favoring to have a son.[20] This has distorted the sex ratio in India (933 females per thousand males [21]) and has given rise to female foeticide.[22]

The payment of a dowry has been prohibited under The 1961 Dowry Prohibition Act in Indian civil law and subsequently by Sections 304B and 498a of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Despite the anti-dowry law in India, it is still widely and illegally practiced across the country.[23]

I'm pretty sure I said that Tzor. The selection for men/foeticide of girls in rural, tribal countries is almost 90% financial. From huge Financial burden (Dowry) to the lack of work for daughters.

Basically, good girls have only 1 job, 'home maker'. And this job doesn't help their birth family. (Though an elder daughter can help raise younger siblings for a while). So, when you have too many mouths to feed, you sell your daughter into prostitution because a) it's great cash, b) it's one less mouth to feed, and c) what else was she going to do for the family, put you in ruin to try and marry her off?

Education, modernization are the only ways to combat this issue. Of course, this creates other problems. As education improves in 3rd world countries, then the job market fluctuates.

In the long run, we need to find a way to remove the need for people to work for the 3 basics (Food, Shelter, Electricity). But of course, this flies in the face of Free Market, so it's like you're worse than a pedophile, if you bring it up.

People will always "work" for them because as the cost of each goes down one imposes a higher standard that requires more "work." The real goal is the elimination of the need for "excessive" work for the reasonably minimum requirements.

I can't think of anything that can effectively bring down base costs other than a "free" market. Government either causes the prices to go higher, or forces the prices low resulting in supply shortages and black market prices to be even higher.

Oops. The 2011 was the one I saw originally. However, my 2 year old was clicking around going through all the various related links. By the time I posted I had lost track of that newer version and assumed 2010 was the only version of that one.

Thanks =-)

On the board there have been discussions about adventuring parties with wildly disparate power levels therein. Sokka v. Aang. Frodo v. Gandalf. Madmartigan v. Willow/Fin Raziel... and so on. This is a funny look at that sort of thing.

So, the UC Davis chancellor orders police to remove a dozen students protesting tuition hikes. The students are sitting down, arms linked, and doing nothing.

Police officer in question walks the line and holds the trigger on the can.

Chancellor then puts the officer on leave, the chief of campus police on leave, and apologizes but refuses to leave office. The students let her know how they feel by silent protest on her way to her car from a press conference.

The silence is just downright eerie.

What's worse is.. he walked back and forth spraying them with pepper spray repeatedly. It was like, "I hold the trigger and just hose them down" for sitting there linked.

i would so love for some people to grab such people like that "police"-guy, hold open his eyes and spray an entire can of pepperspray into his face . .

won't be long now untill they spray somebody with a severe allergy to something in tht spray and probably kill them with it . .

A lot of people could die if that happened. I don't know how the Law works in Germany, but police in the US are untouchable as long as they use [usually] nonlethal weapons, and can use any weapons at all with impunity once they find themselves under attack.
