The Flettner Rotor is apparently making a comeback, because it can be easily computer controlled.

Well, if worse comes to worse, we can always eat dirt....

That's pretty eco-friendly right there.
If, you know, eating dirt is your thing.

A variation of the Flettner Rotor was used in Jacques-Yves Cousteau's Alcyone. It is hard to say but it appears to have been a slightly inferior variation.
