Anyway, I gave up on Chrome after I found out that you couldn't autoscroll with it. That and the fact that I had to go to the Windows side of my hard drive to use it were major points against it.

No, I mean overstrike cursor, not the insert cursor that message boards and modern word processors normally have.

Normally I can post a {quote}the stuff he said{/quote} then go back and type an intro saying Here's what dude said {quote}the stuff he said{/quote}

In Chrome, I have to type the intro, then the open quote tag, then paste the quote then type the close quote tag or I get "Here's what dudewhesaid{/quote}

It's just like when I hit the "only a moron would put this next to backspace" button in MS word, or when I fire up my Apple II emulator for some 4th grade Applesoft Basic action.

if you have a button for that - and not a key combination - we clearly are using different keyboards and it's way to late to dig out the camera tonight.

You can probably also type accent marks in a half-sane manner.

Weird that Chrome defaults to overprint. That is, however, the default state of computers, and insert is not. Insert requires finagling. That little button that IBM put there on the keyboard used to be used like constantly.

Yeah, I use a notebook, and it's a little different even from regular notebooks, it seems. € is on the left of the up arrow, and $ is on the right, but Shift-4 also makes $. Insert and pause/break are right above the backspace key.

And now I know what you're talking about. On other computers I have accidentally put overwrite on and it's annoying.

As for accent marks, not that I know of. I know of some software setups where ' followed by e automatically makes an accented e, which is just plain annoying. I generally don't use accents or umlauts.

I like the setup my old (English-made) notebook had. There was a pounds key somewhere.

Hum, see, I though it was alt-3 but that was making a ƒ character, so I don't know if £ is... Oh, /now/ it works.

I think my fonts were just screwy.

Maybe I'll give Chrome a try as soon as I can get it to duplicate all the functionality I get from Firefox + my favourite addons.

I remember trying Mozilla a few tears ago, before Firefox, and finding it sadly not good enough yet - I expect Google has the oomph to make Chrome 'good enough' PDQ.

Yeah, it's just a beta. I imagine the actual release will be better (and have plugin capacity!).

I've been using Chrome for the past week, and the main annoyance I've had is an interface bug. The trapezoidal tabs appear to overlap their neighbors to the right, but the areas for interaction are rectangular. This makes it really easy to try to close one tab and instead switch to its neighbor to the right.

I've also had trouble downloading from sites that use fucked-up redirections, but I blame the sire for that more than Chrome.

Yep, it's on version 0.2.something. Presumably, there will be improvement in future pre-release versions.

So I just installed Chrome and I've gotta say I'm unimpressed. I don't care much for the interface (the lack of the FF search bar kills me) and I'm honestly finding it slower for page loading. That said, I usually use NoScript which speeds things up immensely and blocks me from most infections.

I dunno, I think I may go back to Firefox for now. The memory leaks in it suck, but I have NoScript and an interface I like. How are Opera and Safari?

I find Safari to be less hassle than Firefox, but I'm running it on a Mac. I don't know what you mean by 'search bar' - the pull down menu of search engines? Safari has alot less frills.

Opera feels clunky and old style, I don't need windows for my windows.

[Edit2] Also, if you're using Ubuntu you might not want to bother with Chrome. Last time I tried, the major interface improvements weren't implemented yet, and you can do better with Firefox addons. The only reason to use Chrome is that it loads faster.

plugins work as gears.

chrome took some getting used to for me. but i've seem to have migrated to the windows box and it does work much better on windows than on ubuntu.

when I get around to installing mint or something else, it'll be interesting to watch what happens.

Oh, I always used a plugin that made Firefox have the same behavior as Chrome. ^-^ So I thought you meant the search other engines thing Firefox has by default (which was neat, but ultimately I just route to them through Google)

You can do the same thing in Chrome. I don't know why you'd want to, but you can.

Chrome uses multiple search engines, although the interface is slightly different. If you want to search on Wikipedia, for example, you type w (or wikipedia) into the omnibar and then hit <Tab>. Then you input the search string as normal and hit <Enter>. To search Amazon, you type a (or amazon). You can add additional search engines, but it requires navigating the options menu and doesn't always work perfectly.

w brings up woot.com as a search rather than wiki. I like woot enough but i'm wondering if this is because iv'e been going to woot more in the last month than wiki.

That's the thing about having a variety of browsers; you can actually find something that works with your input style. Having just one browser or environment would suck.
