Unfortunately, the article I read that in also points out that his death won't really stop the rise of movement he was the face of.

So give it to me without sugar; just how strong is this shaggy dog movement?

Germany took the brunt of the anti-fascist movement, and Austria mostly got off free. Which is weird, because Hitler was from Austria and his Eagle's Nest castle is in Austria, not Germany. So a lot of ex-Nazis just went to Austria at the end of the war. For every Sound of Music story of heroism from that god-benighted country there's two stories of sick fascist fuckers who were the reason that they had to flee in the first place.

That being said, there's a couple of bright sides to look on. The first is that the Christian Democrats who are losing votes to the Nazis were never that different. The fact that they are currently getting pounded by the Nazis is forcing them to differentiate themselves more because the overt Nazis are monopolizing the crazy racist vote. So the Christian Democrats are joining up with the Liberals to form a coalition. In many ways the rise of an overt Nazi party is forcing the "center right" party to abandon fascist pandering as a side job.

The second is more long term. It turns out that the Austrian Fascists have as part of their explicit plan the total removal of Austria from the EU. That would be disastrous, and really piss off Deutschland! Holy shit would that be a bad move. Closed borders with Germany, Italy, Hungary, and the Czech Republic? Are they nuts? (answer: yes) So if they were to actually force a referendum there and get their things settled out they would almost instantaneously nose dive the economy of Austria and provoke Germany to a near war footing while doing it. So even if they won, their victory would be bitter and short lived.

But yeah, the polarization of the Fascist leanings of the Austrian people is coming to a head. Almost one person in three who votes is casting their vote for death camps. And Austrian police are cracking down on sex slavery, because it's an actual (and not unrelated) problem over there.

There is a not imperceptible chance that things will get bad enough there in the next five years that German troops will have to invade. But those guys are clowns, and it would go down kind of like back handing Serbia.

Closing the border and keeping all the immigrants out. They say that if Europe will allow non-Chrstian nations in, that they don't want to be part of Europe. And if they have to build a wall between themselves and Germany and Italy to keep Turks and Gypsies from crossing the border freely that they are willing to do that.

It won't go well of course. When the EU back handed Austria with economic sanctions in 2000 for trying anti-Turk bullshit when the Nazis pulled down 27 percent it damn near crippled the nation and brought them whimpering to the negotiating table. Do you honestly think that the Nazis can pull some crazy stunts to overcome that with their current pull of 29 percent? Hell no!

It's true that a lot of European countries have extremely well-developed radical Islamic communities. However, a lot of that has to do with the way European nations have treated their Muslim immigrants. For example, Germany's had a "guest program" for Turks for years. The problem is that the program allows the Turkish immigrants to stay and raise children, but without the possiblility of citizenship for either them or their children. Similarly, France allows anybody from their former colonies among Islamic countries to immigrate but consigns them to permanent second-class status (though I'm not sure how much of this is de jure and how much is due to cultural factors). These kinds of conditions make radical Islam much more appealing to those immigrant communities.

edit: i'm confused, are you talking about the christian democrats as the people's party? I know that the german's have a similar party but is that the same with the Austrians. As far as I can see the three main parties right now are Austrian people's party, SOcial democrats, and freedom party (haider's party) I thought you were talking about the Social democrats, Frank, but looking at the APP's bio, they seem more like the German christian democratic union or whatever they call themselves these days.
