The new burger king "Square Butts" commercial.

It's promoting the new spongebob toys for their kids meals... and it's a parody of Sir Mixx-a-Lot's "I Like Big Butts"...

So, apparently Burger King thinks the way to get kids to get kids meals is to parody old 80's songs with lots of sexual references?

You haven't watched much Sponge Bob, have you?

Also, that's an old commercial.

re point1: No, but that said, that's a fair point... I do know what the show's like...

re point 2: I just saw it on TV not three hours ago... but I didn't watch the linked commercial, so it might be from an old toy set...

It's "Baby Got Back."

Most kids who watch Sponge Bob have no idea what the song's about. They may have heard it because of their parents, but they're probably not aware of the lyrics.

The point is to get your family to BK over other fast food places, so the commercial translates to me as dual targeted. It's catchy, funny, and features SB (therefore memorable) for the kids. For the adults, it's familiar, and it's a parody (therefore memorable).

Alternately, it's a way for MixaLot to capitalize on his biggest song by gearing it for a younger audience. It's been done before by Target, and in Happy Feet (Ugh. Hated that movie).

... thank you Maj... I spaced. It's been a damned long time since I've heard the actual song.
but that makes sense, and I think that's about how my mind inherently understood it.

The fact that Sir Mixalot (I think) is actually in the commercial cracks me the hell up.

They tend not to make new commercials when they put toys that are similar to a previous campaign. I guess they assume their target audience hasn't seen them before.

or that the target audience won't, for one reason or another, care.
