PM errors

I've been using PMs to check some of the Wiki stuff with Koumei, and it's given me this error a few times today:

Could not connect to smtp host : 10060 : A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

I just dropped Cynic a line, and got the same error.

Anyone else having problems?

It means it was unable to verify that the email notification was sent.

The PM should not actually have had any trouble, that is an email error.

So, they got the PM, right?

I got the PM Maxus sent, yeah. And I'm getting the error too but the message still sent.

Okay. Then ignore the error. It shouldn't even be telling you it, but we've had that issue here before...

It's just server A not talking to B, and telling it that it's done. It doesn't affect anything stored in the web service.

SMTP = Standard Mail Transfer Protocol. The thing that sends real emails, like POP3 gets emails. Has nothing to do with forums, except saying that TGD has an error in its settings to be able to send mail out to people. Happens to the database sometimes when someone disables email notification of things like PMs, new posts, or email from admins, etc.

Like Crissa said, but a little bit more info about it for you.

SMTP is like HTTP, FTP, etc. If you see a PHP error, then it means the forum didn't do something right.

Word of advice, always copy your post in any forum in case of such glitches so you can go back and paste if you hit an error, and don't have to retype it all all over again.

Like accidentally hitting the clear key in firefox or explorer, which doesn't have an undo.

Thank goodness for Chrome.

I got the error just trying to post in a thread.

Crissa's exactly right about the problem. You can also receive the message in a thread if a poster has turned on notifications for it.

In the short term, ignore the message; in the slightly longer term, I'll ping Neil so he can look into what's going on behind the scenes. I know we've been having some server issues the past couple of days (hence the downtime).

Yeah thankfully FF does keep form data if you set it to so you can just go back and try it again. that is how i often double post crap by hitting the wrong button on my mouse.
