I currently use Open Office for documents that require a more professional look.

I use notepad++ as my quick goto tool for lists and initial research jottings

Sometimes I use google docs as a quick tool on computers that do not have notepad++ or OOF.

Currently, what I require is an easy word processor that can do research jottage at the more than simple level.
That is, if I want to categorize items according to tables, simple spacers, or intricate bifurcated thought process trees, I need an easy (maybe powerful??) application that can do this.

If it works on both linux and WinX, that's a definite pro.

If it offers quick encryption capabilities to prevent other people from reading my notes, that is a bigger plus. If not, I can just use a secondary cypher app to do this.

If it can fit on a usb drive so that it can autolaunch on a comp without an install - that's just an awesome plus.

Any ideas?

Do you want a program for organizing your ideas of for presenting them?

I use Omnigraffle for sorting and presenting ideas, and iWorks Pages for letters and such.

Catharz: that is an excellent question.

I function more efficiently when organizing my ideas in the presentable fashion is a good thing for me personally.

But that is more of one of my many sins of vanity in a sense. I can deal with not having that necessity.

Crissa: Does Omnigraffle work well for tree style organization? I'm way too tired presently to expand on that.

You could try FreeMind. I haven't had much use for it, but it seems to be right along the lines of what you're looking for.

Poking around online because I'm vaguely interested in the subject, I found that OmniGraffle is Mac only and the competitor of MS Visio. And looking up Visio netted me this list of similar software {OK, wikipedia}.

I don't know if that's what you're looking for exactly, but maybe it will help.

Tree-style organization is one of the input styles Omnigraffle supports. You can grab and most things around, and put them above and below other things.

Then these things can be changed to different object styles in the output window, and scooted around to make the graphics portion.
