technical question for people good with computers

and grabbing data off, say, a PS2 disc.

So earlier the idea of GoW4 being a turn based strategy game popped into my head, since by now Kratos pretty much runs greece.

This is turn joined with my salivating for Civ V, to be picked up after class today, and now I want to add Kratos as a leaderhead in Civ.

Does anyone know if, and conditionally how, one would grab graphics of Kratos from a PS2 disc to be used in another program?

Anyone know anything about modding Civ?

Well, you can emulate the PS2 on a PC with http://pcsx2.net/. But finding pictures of Kratos online shouldn't be that hard. As to modding Civ 5, it will take a few weeks for the modding community to get its act in order, so we'll have to wait and see how/what can be changed in Civ 5.

If you are talking about reskinning someone to look like Kratos than there is a lot of work.

First you will need a texture ripper. You will probably are going to need to look at a lot of them to figure out which one can rip the textures.

Once you have the texture then you will need to convert them to a format that Civ 5 can read. Usually something like photoshop is good with changing one format to another.

Even with that though you still need to how textures are laid in Civ 5 and rearrange the texture if necessary.

...I take I couldn't just grab the files from GoW2 that are for depicting Kratos and move them over?

If it was the same rendering engine, the same model, and the same scale, and all of the texture features were supported, and lots of other little things I can't be assed to type, yes.

This is almost certainly not the case, so no. No, you can not just move files over. It's like asking notepad (or whatever text only equivalent you have on your OS) to play the shiney new mp3 you just got.

It's really not that complicated - you can grab images through the analog hole.

You boot up GoW on your(or a friends) PS2, you play the game until you get him in a pose or situation you like, pause - and then you use your digital camera to capture that image. (Alternately set up a digital video camera to copy a whole play through and break images out using VLC's (or other media player's) snapshot tool

Use GIMP (or Photoshop/Illustrator/CS3 if you must) to color correct, resize, format convert or otherwise edit. This gives you an image you want in any common image format.

And then you gotta figger out how to get that image into Civ5 - which is something else entirely.

That wouldn't work since there is a pause menu. Also I though Prak wants a leader model to look like Kratos. If is just some face portarait then just grab some character art from the GoW site.

yeah, a leader model. Though I have no clue what leader models in Civ V look like yet, I've barely played it (the game quitting when you're only about 6 turns in and spending all day working on D&D stuff will do that), and haven't seen a diplomacy screen yet.

There is, however, a great temptation to replace the combat advisor with a picture of Kratos screaming bloody murder and vengeance. And trying to redub the dialogue in his voice. That'd be amusing...

I didn't do a huge search for other more appropriate computer related threads, so please forgive me...

Can anyone here convert a couple of xltx files for me into the old ghetto xlt version?

I downloaded the Microsoft converter thing and installed it, but for whatever dumb reason, it only fixed Word extensions, not Excel or Powerpoint (though it claims it did all three).

Does the power of save-as not work, or is the problem that you're the one with office 2003?
