Yeah, he got more than twenty times what he wanted. I heard about that last week or so.
He used to post here? Was that back at Nifty?

Wow. So, all you have to do is give away a product for several years and then finally get paid.

Rich has been paid for his product over the years the same as any webcomic artist, through his store. The reason comics like Something Positive, Girls With Slingshots, Penny Arcade and Questionable Content have made their artists better livings is that they made the comics their primary jobs, and go to cons, advertise, and merch the hell out of them. At least one of them, Randy of Something Positive, straight up told his readers "if you want regular updates, you need to make this something that can support me, by buying shit"
Rich, so far as I know, doesn't even treat the comic as a job, but rather a hobby which just happens to bring in some money.
That aside, yeah, I was happy to see him do so well, and to contribute in some small way

I've been following the OotS Kickstarter event and the results were nothing short of amazing. Much respect goes for Rich for how he conducted the drive.

So how much more do we have to pony up to get Rich to buy D&D and write a workable 5th edition?

One look at his 3E homebrew tells us he can't write a workable edition. (However, I'm pretty sure that whatever he came up with for the WotC setting contest was better than fucking Nentir Vale.)
