Inspirational Fantasy Artwork

Post by Avoraciopoctules »

I've collected some cool images that give me ideas when I'm coming up with stuff for games and stories. I wanted to post some D&D / generic fantasy art and maps, and it wouldn't really fit to post them in the image macro thread. So, new thread.

Image

More generally, there's a nicely organized gallery of images here, and a bunch of Creative Commons-licensed dungeon and other maps here. Neither are mine, but I've found both useful in the past.

I've got a few I keep around...One good one, if you don't mind the NSFW ads, is going to gelbooru.com and searching for "fantasy landscape" or to safebooru and looking for ucchiey. I'm sure Ucchiey has other galleries on places, but that's where I know he's at.

But here's a favorite from a website that's since closed down.
Image
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

--The horror of Mario

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

I love that Lich club picture

It's by Keith Parkinson. He did Everquest box covers too. He died of cancer a while ago.

Deviantart links ahead:

Towers and domes in a red sunrise.
Subtle magical effect.
Castle town on the move.
Roaring dragon.
Ancient tree.
Gem-filled cavern.
Dueling wizards on the Plane of Shadow?
Sunrise near a dragon's lair. (This artist does excellent portraits as well, though she removed some of my favourites).

Zelda-related deviantart links:

The very beginning.
Termina's Clocktower.
OoT Link with Megaton Hammer.
Fierce Deity sketch.
Dark Link appears.
Evil spirit.
Masked child.
Approching Death Mountain.
Stallord (giant skeletal dragon).
Reasonably generic hermit, wizard, and concerned citizen.
Warrior with flaming sword.
Volvagia attacks.
Hammer time!

I know most of these aren't as epic as the other things in the thread, but this is all I've got. I might post the images directly later, if anyone's interested. The last one is definitely going straight to the image macros thread.

I wonder if that picture was inspired by Final Fantasy 9. In that game, the world is covered with a mist that creates monsters (and the flavor text describes it like the taint from Legend of the 5 Rings, but all of the player characters spend a lot of time in the mist and don't seem to suffer from it). Airships are the primary transportation, and all the cities are at high elevation. The way that everything seems dead and broken below a given elevation makes me think of it.

Also, someone need to tell the raven druid need to pull her skirt up, I don't know why it became acceptable for women to have their buttcracks showing but it needs to stop.

I agree, but generally speaking it's women sticking their unwashed dingleberry-infested asscracks in my face and not men.
