Is there any particular reason why you couldn't just use Mage's masturbation Lucubration to store a spell of another list you want to generically prepare in one of your spell slots after casting it in some other fashion -- such as from a scroll activated with Use Magic Device -- and then just use pearls of power to continually re-re-cast and re-prepare thereafter?

Activating magic items is not the same as casting a spell. That's why scrolls don't use your caster level, stats, or any of your casting feats like Spell Penetration.

So the spell won't work.

That being said, there are various ways to get spells into your mind that don't normally belong there, so good catch on that.

Determine Effect
A spell successfully activated from a scroll works exactly like a spell prepared and cast the normal way.
The real smoking gun as far as I'm concerned though is that the Ring of Spell Storing and other assorted items lets you fill 'em up with spells cast from scrolls.

The final effect may be the same, but full process is not the same. It doesn't benefit from your caster level, stats, and feats like Spell Penetration. This makes it clear that you are not the caster.

The "caster" is the scroll itself, and the activator gets to share in any benefits of being the caster (as a target, as the targeter, etc). This is why people can UMD scrolls and cast spells from Rings of Spell Storing without needing to be casters.

The text for Lubrication also talks about "recalling" and "recovering" a spell you have cast, making it clear that the spell had to have been in your mind at some point.

You have a much better argument for staves, but still not a winning one because the spell can't be recalled if you never had it in memory.

Spell Penetration actually does apply to spells you cast out of scrolls, because it is a bonus to the die roll you make, not a bonus to your caster level that you don't use. Otherwise, K is correct.

The entry for Staves implies that they only thing that Spell Penetration applies to because it uses your caster level, but I could see it both ways.
