[Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
"We have to sneak into every temple in Lankhmar?" Gray Mouser cries, spilling expensive wine all over his costly gray tunic. "What for?"
"Don't get excited, Mouser," you say calmly, looking up from a table buried under scattered scrolls and notes. "According to this hidden scroll we stole from the library of Lord Rannarsh, the magical Dragonsword of Lankhmar is hidden in one of the Temples."
"Doesn't it say which temple?" Gray Mouser growls.
"No," you answer, shaking your head. "The scroll just says 'it's under the altar of a temple'. But the scroll itself is older than any of the temples now on the Street of the Gods. It must have been buried under a temple that was torn down and another built on top of it. We'll just have to check them all until we find the right one."
"I can hear the priests now. 'Come right in, Fafhrd,' they'll say, 'we haven't been robbed in a blue moon.' There are more pleasant ways to die, old friend."
You grin. The Gray Mouser grumbles a lot, but you can already see his eyes gleam at the thought of the two most famous thieves in the city of Lankhmar stealing the magical Dragonsword. The two of you begin making plans.
Unfortunately, there are several other parties who are also highly interested in the scheme you two are plotting. One of these is Ningauble of the Seven Eyes, your magical advisor. Another is Sheelba of the Eyeless Face, Gray Mouser's magical mentor. Both these powerful wizards know you will be certain to find magical items on your quest. They know, too, that you will probably be forced to seek their help, and they're eager for payment.
In addition, the Gods of Trouble, while furious that you're even considering robbing their temples, have a wager on the outcome. They'll try to stop you or they may help you, depending on who's winning or losing the bet! Only one god is pleased to hear you two are on the prowl--Death is overjoyed, planning to do a record business this week.
But--ignorance is bliss. You and Gray Mouser are blissfully ignorant of any of this as you set out for the first temple on your list. As you're leaving, you hear a disturbing rumor that the Thieves' Guild has put a large price on your head. Several skilled assassins are searching for you. There's really nothing new, however. Certainly nothing to worry about.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
PRIMARY PLAYER CHARACTER: Fafhrd
Alignment: Neutral Good
Class: Ranger/Thief/Bard
Level: 15/5/5
Armor: Leather Armor
Hit Points: 50/50
Weapons: A bastard sword called Graywand and a large throwing dagger called Heartseeker. The weapons have no magical properties.
Damage: You throw Heartseeker automatically at the beginning of every combat; it does 6 damage and treats a “special” result as “double damage.” You attack twice per combat round with Graywand, which does 10 damage.
Special Abilities: You take half damage from cold-based attacks. You climb as a 15th level thief and you are not subject to any penalties for ice and snow while climbing. Because of the great respect and fear you have for wizards, you treat all your “double damage” attack rolls as simple hits when fighting any magic-user.
Description: You are a red-haired barbarian from the northern wastelands. You stand 6’11’’ tall. You favor a beard and wear your hair in a long braid down your back. You dress in the style of your northern homeland, choosing to wear furs and large gold bracelets.
Although you would never admit it, there is a tie between you and the Gray Mouser that goes beyond love or honor or friendship. You would gladly lay down your life for your longtime friend.
Secondary Player Character: Gray Mouser
Alignment: True Neutral
Class: Fighter/Thief/Wizard
Level: 10/15/3
Armor: Leather Armor
Hit Points: 45/45
Weapons: A rapier named Scalpel and a slim knife called Cat’s Claw. The weapons have no magical properties.
Damage: Grey Mouser usually fights with one weapon in each hand. Scalpel does 9 damage and Cat’s Claw does 7 damage. He can also spend one attack round throwing Cat’s Claw for an automatic 5 damage with no hit roll, after which he’ll spend the rest of the fight attacking twice a round with Scalpel.
Special Abilities: An unusually expert thief, Grey Mouser very rarely has trouble with traps or locks.
Description: Grey Mouser’s background is obscure, but his dark skin suggests that he is probably from the far south. He stands 5’4’’ and is thin and wiry. He dresses in gray from head to toe. The Mouser is fascinated by anything magical.
Although the Gray Mouser would never admit it, there is a bond between himself and Fafhrd that goes beyond love or honor or friendship. He would gladly lay down his life for his tall friend.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
It’s high noon in the city of Lankhmar–a strange time for thieves to be working, but you and Gray Mouser are not ordinary thieves! Grain Street is unusually crowded, you notice as you walk along. Several times, the Gray Mouser is tempted to pluck a heavy purse from a nobleman’s belt, but he refrains. The last thing either of you want now is trouble!
But, unfortunately, that’s what you’re in for. As you hurry along the docks, heading for the Street of the Gods where the temples stand, you catch a glimpse of dark figures shadowing your every move.
“Thieves’ Guild assassins,” says Gray Mouser when you draw his attention to this. He shrugs, seemingly unconcerned. But you see his hand close over Cat’s Claw’s hilt, and your hand goes to your sword.
As you turn onto the Street of the Gods, you suddenly hear eerie laughter. Whirling around, you see three black-robed and hooded figures, who immediately vanish from sight. Shuddering, you don’t dare tell Grey Mouser about them!
Saying a prayer to the gods both of you currently think well of, you head for the Temple of Aarth. The assassins send their spies after you, the Gods of Trouble watch you, magical spies fly to Ningauble and Sheelba with word of your doings.
And, all the while, Death waits patiently….
“Well, Fafhrd,” Gray Mouser mutters as you stand before the Temple, “do you plan to just walk in, tip over the altar, and pick up the sword?”
“That idea has some merit,” you say slowly, uncertain whether your sharp-tongued partner is joking or not, “but I favor waiting until night and climbing the dome to get past the guards. What do you think?”
“I think you’re a dolt, that’s what I think!” the Mouser growls. “Going after this Dragonsword is going to lead to all kinds of trouble, mark my words!” Then he sighs. “You know, though, a lovely priestess once told me that there are rain sewers joining with tunnels under the Temple. If you insist on this madness, let’s sneak in that way.”
Even as you stand talking, you catch a glimpse of a Thieves’ Guild member watching your every move. You say:
1) “I think we better do something quickly? Let’s go to the front entrance.”
2) “I don’t think much of sewers! Let’s leave now, lose whoever’s hounding us, then climb the dome tonight.”
3) “Your idea is a good one, Gray Mouser. We’ll hide until dusk, then slip down into raid sewers and enter the temple that way.”

Dressed in women's clothing, you stand at the lower entrance to the Temple. "I don't like this," you mumble.
"I've done it many times. It can't fail," the Mouser whispers.
Looking at Gray Mouser dubiously, you suddenly think of something. "If you've done this before, why aren't you the one dressed like a girl? Why aren't you the one who's not wearing armor and has his sword wrapped up? You're shorter, after all. I think we should go back and switch!"
"Shhhhh," the Mouser hisses at you. "Priests!"
Looking over his head, you see at least twelve priests approaching. The biggest one looks at you and says, "You've brought the weapons to be blessed? Good. Come with me to the lower altar."
As you follow the priests, tripping over your skirt, you:
1) decide this is the last time you let the Mouser take you into anything! Giving a shriek, you run out of the Temple. Gray Mouser looks startled but races after you. Escaping safely, you figure you'll take your chances climbing the dome!
2) keep going to the lower altar, it sounds interesting.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
@Beroli,
It sorta looks like this is the result of choosing option 1 (going right to the front entrance). If there's been any error, I'll let you decide if we go forward with the description as written or to change. Assuming this is correct, I'd go with option 2 - continue to the lower altar.

That's what I get for not being snarky about weird editing glitches when I considered snark. This does look like they forgot the whole "sewers sneaking in" aspect in favor of Mouser proposing a different plan, but this is the correct entry; if you'd chosen "go right in the front entrance" it would be different (and actually is still available to you; check the end of this post). Apparently you went through the sewer but did so knowing you were going to be dealing with a lower entrance that leads to a populated area of the temple anyway.
So to the lower altar you go.
"There's nothing under that altar!" the Mouser says gloomily.
You're forced to agree; it's made of solid gold and would take twenty men and one elephant to lift it! You're all set to grab your weapons and run, but the Mouser stops you.
"Look!" he says in awe. "The priests are casting a spell on them!"
Finishing the spell, the priest says to you, "Here, take these to your Master. Tell him that they now have the God's blessing."
"What Master?" you start to ask, but the Mouser jabs you in the ribs. Then you understand! They've mistaken you for someone else! (I think this may legitimately be Fafhrd having trouble with the concept of a disguise, not another editing glitch.) Taking the weapons, you hurry away.
Blessing of Aarth: Your weapons now do 2 additional damage, and the next successful hostile magic spell cast at you will be negated.
1) "The gods smile on us," you tell Mouser. "Let's go to the Temple of Mog the Spider God tomorrow morning."
2) "You know, Fafhrd," the Mouser answers, "I've been thinking. The sword could be under the main altar of the Temple. Let's go in the front entrance tomorrow and take a look."
Fafhrd's Hit Points: 50/50
Attacks: You throw Heartseeker automatically at the beginning of every combat; it does 8 damage and treats a “special” result as “double damage.” You attack twice per combat round with Graywand, which does 12 damage.
Grey Mouser's Hit Points: 45/45
Attacks: Grey Mouser usually fights with one weapon in each hand. Scalpel does 9 damage and Cat’s Claw does 7 damage. He can also spend one attack round throwing Cat’s Claw for an automatic 5 damage with no hit roll, after which he’ll spend the rest of the fight attacking twice a round with Scalpel.
Next successful hostile magic spell is negated.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
Makes sense!
I say Option 1 - Go to the Temple of Mog in the morning.
Incidentally (and for anyone else that might be observing) I don't think it's likely that the thing we're seeking happens to be at the first place we look, and based on what they said about all the temples being new it seems like it would have to be on the lowest level. It sounds like the main altar is on a higher level, so I just don't see how they dug a new basement and somehow didn't uncover the dragon sword. Logically I would expect that the altar that it's under hasn't been moved, so if a new temple was built on top of an old temple, I'd expect the ORIGINAL altar to be still in place - if they swapped altars they would have found the treasure. The book may not make that much sense, but that's my thought process.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
Separately, question about attacking and damage.
On Round 1 of combat, Fafhrd automatically throws a dagger and attacks twice, so he could potentially do 26 damage in the first round (assuming all attacks hit and none do double damage). With the blessing adding +2 damage to each weapon, the dagger could do 8 and each sword strike could do 12, so potentially 32 damage in the first round if all attacks hit and none deal double damage.
For Grey Mouser he attacks with two weapons. If he chooses not to attack with both weapons, he can throw dagger (hitting without a roll). Essentially, in a round where he throws the dagger he trades potentially 9+7 [11+9 with the blessing] if both attacks hit for regular damage for 5 automatic damage [7 with the blessing].
Is that correct?
If I throw a weapon and for some reason combat ends without my opponent defeated (like we are given the option to run) do I get the thrown weapons back? Ie, unless something specifically removes a weapon from my possession I always start combat with 'regular equipment'?

Correct, and yes, you automatically get the throwing weapons back.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
Okay, and another weapon question. It looks like outside of Heartseeker, none of the weapons have a special property, so they do double damage on a 20 only. Heartseeker's Special Property is doing double damage on a 'special result' so it does double damage on an 18, 19, or 20. You mentioned that a special effect 'good or bad' could happen if the main character (Fafhrd for me) rolls an 18-19. Is there an additional special effect that may trigger if heartseeker rolls an 18-19, or is double damage the ONLY possible result? For a roll of 18-19 with Graywand something else (good or bad) may happen?
-This space intentionally left blank
Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
Double damage is the only possible result for Heartseeker on an 18 or 19; Heartseeker's feature amounts to "if you roll an 18 or 19, turn the die to 20." But with Graywand something else would happen, yes.
You stand in front of the Temple to the Spider God, staring at it gloomily. It is not a cheerful sight.
"I'm not going in there by night," the Mouser says grimly, "and I'm not going in there by day. What are you going to do, Fafhrd?"
"I don't like the looks of this place either," you say nervously, glancing around. "Maybe we should get some help."
"Like Ningauble or Sheelba, the sorcerers?" Mouser asks, frowning. "I've said it before and I'll say it again--their charges are always higher than their services! But, if you insist, I opt for my mentor, Sheelba."
"I prefer Ningauble to that shadow-faced friend of yours," you say, shuddering. Then, a sudden idea strikes you. "There's always the Animal Handlers' Guild!"
The Mouser looks at you with something akin to admiration. "That's not a bad suggestion," he says in a surprised tone of voice. "But, still, it's up to you."
1) "Mouser, we'll go to Sheelba," you say, hoping to make the Mouser more enthusiastic for the quest.
2) "I really need to discuss this with Ningauble," you tell the Mouser firmly.
3) "Very well, the Animal Handlers' Guild it is," you announce, pleased with yourself.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
As you start to go to the Animal Handlers, you are suddenly attacked by a group of seven thieves! Five of them would be barely worth acknowledging as a threat, but two stand out, tall, skinny man in black leather and a red-haired woman in white leather.
The Thieves' Guild Assassins have found you! You have one offensive choice to make: whether and when Gray Mouser will throw Cat's Claw. I will assume by default that you will both stay as close as possible to full health and that if a blow will kill one of you, Mouser will die before Fafhrd does. Let me know if you wish to change these settings. Combat will be resolved in the main thread.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
I'd like to see how tough the opposition is. I think I'm usually better off with the two attacks. Unless there is something special where I must hit, I think I'll save it. Or, if I figure out how tough the regular thieves are, I would use it to guarantee a kill (ie, if I know 7 damage will kill).
Edit - So to be clear, not planning on using Grey Mouser's dagger attack at all for the moment.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
After fighting the assassins, Fafhrd has 29 hit points and Gray Mouser has 27. You continue on to the Animal Handler's Guild.
"You want something to kill a giant spider, huh?" the brutish Guildmaster asks. "I'd be willing to capture the thing for the right price."
"No," you say hastily. "We--uh--want to take care of the problem ourselves. Do you have something that will do the job?"
"Sure! Salt Spiders, they'll do the trick. But it'll cost you. I only have three of them and they don't come cheap."
"Sale Spiders?" says the Mouser scornfully. "I could go out and catch my own! Why--"
Haggling over price is the favorite pastime of Lankhmarians. Letting the Mouser do the talking, you go over and inspect the merchandise. Your eyes widen. Those spiders are five feet long! They snap at you as you approach, biting at their cage in frustration when they can't get to you. Green poisonous goo slides sizzling down the metal bars.
"Uh, Mouser," you say, jumping back, "maybe this isn't such a--" Too late. The Mouser has already concluded the deal.
It's going to be an interesting night.
(Pause for the Thieves' Guild Assassins to take a guess at where you're going.)

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
Question regarding the fight - from your description it indicated that the defender would assign damage. With five thieves I was afraid that they might assign all damage to one, so it would take at least 7 rounds of combat to win. Were the 5 treated as a single opponent? Did 'extra damage' carry over?
I guess it looks like defensively they were trying to spread the damage evenly (smart!) and the goons were treated as a single character. Is that about right?

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
Yes, the goons were treated as a single character. As for damage carrying over, let me see if this explains it: In the second round, when Mouser hit with both Cat's Claw and Scalpel for enough damage that either one of them would have dropped any of the three combatants on their side, the Assassins players could choose that one blow hit Kissla and another hit the goons. But they couldn't have chosen that both of them hit the goons even though said goons would be already dead for one of them. Nor could they have chosen that (e.g.) Cat's Claw did 2 damage to the goons, 3 damage to Kissla, and 6 damage to Quarsh so that all three of them stayed up: the blow couldn't be divided.
And they've found you again! Will continue in the main thread.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
Fafhrd's Hit Points: 16/50
The Gray Mouser's Hit Points: 22/45
The Mouser easily opens the locked door to the Temple. You hear giant legs sweeping the ground and see a giant Black Widow Spider running toward you! Quickly, you turn the three Salt Spiders loose. As they attack, you sneak up to the altar.
The altar looks like solid crystal, but you soon discover that it's made of wood with crystal over it, and is easy to move.
"Too easy," the Mouser mutters, but you don't pay any attention to him. Eagerly, you look beneath. No Dragonsword. Cursing the gods in disappointment, you reach inside.
"Look at these black pearls!" you cry triumphantly.
"Watch it!" Mouser yells. "That's not a pearl, it's an egg!"
Too late.
You are being attacked by a baby Black Widow Spider. Fafhrd throws his dagger and hits, killing the spider immediately.
Surviving, you flee the Temple. The Mouser grabs one of the eggs. When thrown at an enemy, it will turn into a Spider with 7 Hit points that deals 10 damage on hit. It will fight on your side and, if it survives the battle, flee into the shadows never to be seen again by you (you hope).
You go to the Temple of Kos.
Kos is the God of Warriors in the north. Your people always thought well of this deity and you've been in his temple several times.
"Gray Mouser," you say suddenly, "I just remembered! There's a sword hanging over the altar inside this temple!"
"I thought you said the sword was beneath the altar!" the Gray Mouser says, glaring at you.
"I could have mistranslated that part," you admit.
"Fafhrd, if we've gone on a wild goose chase because you can't spell right--"
"Look, Gray Mouser, I'm sure this god likes me. Let's go in through the front door."
1) The Mouser agrees.
2) "The god may like you, but what about his priests?" Mouser argues. "I say we sneak in the back." You agree.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
So I'm a little confused. I didn't get any choices about where to go next before the assassins were able to attack me again. Is it common that after making a choice (going to the Animal House) that the automatic choice (go to Mog Temple) follows? Essentially it feels like they got to find me twice without me getting a chance to throw them off the trail at all. I see that I get a choice about how to go to the Temple of Kos, but not WHETHER to go to the Temple. Just trying to think about what I can do to avoid them a little bit.
In this case, I'm going through the front door. I'm hoping that my battle wounds will prove that I'm a warrior and the priests will be motivated to heal me to full.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
Yes, I'm afraid so. Fafhrd has a specific agenda he's following in his bid to find the Dragonsword: even if it might make sense to go somewhere for healing, he won't do so. Because of Thieves' Guild spies, the Assassins player always knows whether you're on the Street of the Gods, elsewhere in Lankhmar, or outside Lankhmar, but has to guess where you are within that range based on nothing but names.
"There, what'd I tell you," you say, reaching up and taking the sword. "The god's practically giving this to me!"
"Yeah!" says the Mouser is a strangled voice. "And here he is! You can th-thank him in p-person!"
"So, you seek a sword, Fafhrd!" booms a voice. "Very well, I'll give you a choice!" He waves a hand and four icy portals appear in the walls.
"Behind each portal is a sword. Bring one back to me in return for the one you tried to steal, and I will let you escape with your lives. Oh, and by the way, Fafhrd--I can't stand you!" The god laughs uproariously.
"Don't say a word, Gray Mouser," you growl. Then you choose:
1) the Sword of Horus.
2) the Sword of Perseus.
3) the Sword of Arthur.
4) the Sword of the Star Knight.

With luck, Arthur's sword comes with the scabbard that prevents any wounds. If I can't take any more damage, I won't need healing! Let's go for Door #3 - the sword of Arthur.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
You find yourself standing beside a river. As you watch, you are amazed to see a warrior kneeling on the bank, weeping. Suddenly, he hurls an obviously valuable sword into the water. Then he leavers.
"I'd cry, too, if I threw away such a sword," the Mouser remarks, shaking his head. "Why do you suppose he did that, Fafhrd?"
"All I know is that one of us should get that expensive weapon out of the water," you reply.
"Enjoy the swim," the Gray Mouser growls.
Well, after all, it is your quest. Diving into the water, you swim over to the spot where you think the sword landed. Suddenly, a beautiful water sprite rises up before you.
"I will give you the sword your seek if you will perform a task for me," she tells you. "Take this ring and bring back your friend."
After a great deal of talking, you finally convince the Gray Mouser to come with you, once you tell him the magical ring will let him breathe under water.
"Destroy this giant who keeps me prisoner, and you shall have the sword," says the lovely sprite.
"Would you rather die at the hands of this giant or the hands of Kos?" the Gray Mouser asks you.
"A giant over a god any day, Gray Mouser!" You laugh.
You are fighting a Cloud Giant. Fafhrd hits with Heartseeker and hits once with Graywand. Gray Mouser misses both times (one of which would have been a Special result). The giant hits for 14 damage to the Gray Mouser.
Fafhrd 16/50
Gray Mouser 8/50
Fafhrd hits both times. Gray Mouser hits both times, killing the giant.
The sprite gives you a Healing Potion that restores 15 hit points and a box of emeralds. You are then transported back to the temple. The god appears before you.
"You have done very well, Fafhrd," the god says, sounding surprised. "I'm beginning to like you, after all. In reward for your courage, I'll let you choose another sword. And this time, you may keep the weapon."
1) "Forget it," the Gray Mouser says. "I'm thirsty. Let's go to an inn, Fafhrd."
2) "Wait, Mouser," you say, "what have we got to lose except our lives? I could use a new sword." Kos transports you to a sword, but it's not any of the ones you chose the first time.
Also let me know if you want to drink the potion right away, and whom will drink it if so.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
I'm worried about being killed by the Thieves' Guild, meaning that I can't be resurrected. Basically, I think if they catch me again I'll lose the game. For that reason, it's better to die as long as I'm not 'functionally irretrievable'. But it's hard to know if that's where I'll be if I take the quest, which I'm going to do. So I'll have Gray Mouser drink the potion and we'll take Option 2- Go for a new sword. It may leave us even more vulnerable to the next assassin attack, but I'm not feeling like there's a better choice.

Re: [Let's Play] Dragonsword of Lankhmar: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser
If you had been killed by the cloud giant, Kos would have deposited your bodies outside his temple--you would have gone to the Death Chart, not to "you lose."
"He's going to kill her, Fafhrd," shouts the Gray Mouser. Drawing his weapons, he attacks the knife-bearing priest. You are right behind him!
Fafhrd hits with Heartseeker and gets a Special result and a Double damage result with Graywand. Special result:
The Gray Mouser slaps some healing salve on his wounds and yours. Each of you heals for 8 hit points of damage, but he doesn't otherwise attack this round.
The priest hits, doing 7 damage to Gray Mouser, and automatically hits with a magical dagger, doing 4 damage to Gray Mouser.
Fafhrd misses once and hits for double damage, killing the priest.
You free the woman and take the dagger.
Fafhrd's Hit Points: 24/50
Gray Mouser's Hit Points: 20/45
Sacrificial Dagger: Will auto-kill one monster or undead creature. Will not work on humans. Is destroyed when you use it. If you're facing multiple opponents, using it will take one combat round for one of you.
1) "Well, at least we survived that little trip," the Mouser says as you walk down the street. "What do you say we have Ningauble teleport us into the future? Or should we just try the next temple?" You go to the next temple on your checklist.
2) "Wait, Mouser," you say, "you've given me an idea. Let's go to the Blue Moon Inn and talk to Krownis the Hag. Maybe she can tell our future."
