Do not underestimate the power and pull of putting a giant number 3 on a D&D edition. This is the dumbest thing I've heard recently. Calling 4E "Third Edition, Mark 3" would not have made it more popular than it was. This fragment alone makes not a lot of sense. The reasoning in the p...

Well, Mike Mearls got promoted. Any hope for 5e?

No.

Today's Legends & Lore is truly painful to read. And makes me sad.

Re: Solutions to MM-itus?

I've generally felt so. Once you've picked all the low-hanging fruit, i.e. monsters from mythology, it's hard to come up with something that isn't either a variation on something familiar or some new random collection of abilities that no one gives a shit about. (Note, when I was a kid I thought th...

While it uses the "Transitive Structure" on debuffs rather than buffs, Dragon Age 2 had an interesting take on it. For example, Warriors had a couple powers that got better if the enemy was Brittle, but they had no powers that caused that status effect. So you needed a Mage to make the Wa...

2.) This is still characters not fearing death, per se...they're just fearing the price tag you arbitrarily assigned to death. Yes, but the observable behavior of the players mimics the one they would show if they really feared death. 3.) You aren't really addressing my point, since in your case th...

It's hard enough to get players to feel suspense or a sense of danger even when the threat IS real (to the character). But every character instinctively fears the loss of magic items. That's why I have a houserule that resurrection can only be paid for by the sacrifice of a level-appropriate magic ...

That's gross, not net. You'd quickly lose employees to facility costs, operating costs, advertising costs and profitability. Just off the top of my head. I mean, it's probably a decent ROI, but not a cash cow. News at 11: TTRPGs are not a cash cow. I wonder why you feel this is worth pointing out.

With the proliferation of e-readers, pads and netbooks the electronic subscription could become viable as a businessmodel, if it isn't already. DDi is pretty much the lifeblood of WotC's role playing division. Even a conservative estimate of 25000 subscribers means at least 125000$ / month. That me...

And what exactly is wrong with having a lot of longer encounters? I wouldn't personally expect to clear out a dungeon in one night. Maybe that's just another example of me playing the game drastically differently from how most people here do. But if we go through a dungeon and take 3-4 sessions, th...

If you're going to do Dungeon-style attrition and do anything else, you have to have the expected encounter in a Dungeon be really small. Because you're going to have a lot more of them. So you kick open the door and there are... two skeletons . Old-style dungeon adventure don't work so well in 4E ...

The other thing to note is that it's not normally possible to use more than 2 Healing Surges in a combat anyway. You have a Second Wind and the Leader type has some sort of power that lets you use another one. So the Warden having 4 healing surges for the encounter is about the same as hm having in...

Hmm, it looks like he didn't say it, but for some reason I was under the impression that he was going to ditch any healing that didn't involve use of a surge, and reign in healing in general. But I guess you'd still have the situation of the cleric boosting your surge by 42 points or whatever. My m...

I don't understand what your goal is. Are you just trying to get rid of extended rests? If so, I suggest making all Daily powers into Encounter powers as well. The problem is that as long as they have plenty of healing surges left, no one gets scared. Of course there are ways to drain surges, but I...

why not just have them all full heal at the end of every encounter? Seems to have about the same effect. And why is it wrong to make PC's track across sessions? Is it really that hard to have a spot on your character sheet for current, and max surges? As said before, full heal after every encounter...

Point of order: since short rests can be repeated for credit, any "per encounter" healing is essentially infinite healing between combats. If you're OK with that, go ahead. Yeah, I'm actually ok with that. The other thing to note is that it's not normally possible to use more than 2 Heali...

4E - per-encounter healing surges

First off, yeah this is 4E, so if you want to rant against it, please use one of the following threats for that: http://tgdmb.com/viewtopic.php?t=52171 http://tgdmb.com/viewtopic.php?t=52191 Now to the problem at hand: I'm not very happy with healing surges as they are - only recharging them at exte...

Looks kind of nice, a 4E/Essentials dungeon crawl with an oldschool fuck-the-player attitude. Although the name fourthcore is vomit-inducing.

PPS. that said, even though people say that 4e is suited to computer games I think it's actually the worst suited yet ... they will have to completely change the mechanics in my opinion, so there is a glimmer of hope. Neverwinter is not a 4e game. It's a game that uses a 'modified version' of the r...

...so they released the new online character builder. Finally. And, surprise surprise, it's worthless. You cannot create new monsters or powers. You cannot add powers to an existing monster. You can do exactly two things:

- Change the monster's level
- Rename monster powers

Amazing.

I wouldn't go a TOB or 4e route with powers. People threw shit fits when TOB came out, and you still find loads of groups that ban it because it breaks the standard 3e mold and is "WOW" or "Anime". Same for 4e with the powers argument. (Whether valid or not, people don't like it...
