I quite enjoy "X isn't overpowered because it's each players responsibility to make sure he doesn't overshadow the other players."

I feel like Sanderson's Laws are relevent to this discussion,. Particularly, in talking about the importance of limitations.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've got a player hell bent on playing Jorah Mormont as the Doctors first companion so it looks like I'm starting in Westeros. I'm gonna show this thread to the player who asked me to run this and see what he thinks. The whole point of this was that each player in my grou...

I'm only familiar with Munchausen in passing. Mostly from having seen it mentioned on the den. But if I remember right the gist is that you just tell a part of the story and then someone else can try to throw a monkey wrench into your plot by bidding against the storyteller with points until it's re...

Give me a system

So a few days ago I was asked to run a Doctor Who game all about cross overs. The Autobots help the Doctor recover an artifact from Cybertron's past. The Doctor chases Bill and Ted through time in an attempt to stop them from altering history too drastically and causing a universe ending paradox. Th...

I ran a "Persona" game a few years back. The way I handled social links was by creating social milestones similar to event milestones in Marvel Heroic Roleplaying. It wasn't great but it worked.

When I first began designing a new RPG it was under the assumption that it would be for computers and tablets. The idea was to create a new RPG for gamers who don't always have access to a group in their area, and a program that would include all the rules, handy tooltips/tutorials, battle map (not ...

The idea that intimidate requires the right situation is retarded. The Doctor should be able to intimidate the Daleks.

Last year I posted a similar idea. Though it was a poorly written and has undergone some changes, the idea has since become the cornerstone of the system I'm currently developing.

Could you clarify some of this for me? So in order to use a lesser ability, you first use an action to channel, then use another action for that ability? And while that channel exists, you can continue to use that ability or any other lesser ability which uses that channel? To use a greater ability...

So what sort of setting does this support then? The setting doesn't have a name. Its more of an implied setting built from the assumptions that the mechanics make. In this setting there are 4 planes, the Physical, Etherial, Astral, and Land of the dead. Living creates have life energy and can use C...

Cool idea. What problem does it solve? None. Not intentionally anyway. When I started work on my system one thing I did not want was a vancian "per-day" system for keeping track of abilities. I'm also not a fan of spell-point/mana systems either. My design goals were to... A.) Create a me...

Channeling mechanic

All living creatures are born in a violent explosion of raw Prana, gathering and condensing into an Ether Body or soul, which exists on the Etherial Plane. The Ether Body houses all of the Prana necessary for a living creature to sustain itself for the duration of its life. Prana is often called by ...

Mystic Theurge and Sorcerer fix

This is just something that was bouncing around my head while I was taking a walk. Step one : Rename the sorcerer the mystic theurge. Step two: Remove the PrC from the game entirely...bye bye Step three: Slightly increase the number of spells known. Step four: Allow the mystic theurge to choose his ...

Hunter Class

A player in my group decided he wanted to play a ranged character with an animal companion but he didn't want favored enemy/terrain or spells or wild shape. At first I showed him the scout and told him I could rework it a bit to fit his needs. He seemed disinterested in the scout so I cooked him up ...

But I do have to echo that the baseline barbarian as written in Pathfailure isn't a very good place to start working from. What I would suggest is first asking yourself "what do I want this class to do?". Then, once you have the answer to that question, design the class to do exactly that...

TL;DR- Drop the qualifiers and just hand out real abilities. Yeah that ability does suck (I knew that it did when I wrote it). Like a said I haven't really fleshed out the ancestral paths very well. With this particular path I very quickly (and clumsily) filled in the blanks so I would have some ki...

Well, the RoW barbarian is both simpler and more effective. Like, by a huge margin. I'm big on simplicity in class design, so I highly encourage you to do that instead of putting a bunch of fiddly little abilities that slow down gameplay (seriously, whirlwind attack on a crit? wtf?) I know it is. I...

Serious question: Why not use the Races of War barbarian as your base? You could just modify a few of the class features to get your storm thing whenever. No reason really, I just like making shit up. Also: Storm of vengance isn't actually that great. You could give it out earlier than level 19 (a ...

Some context needed: What sort of game will this guy be operating under? Pathfinder? 3.5 D&D? A mix? Because how good or bad the abilities are will depend in large part to the context. Ah derp, silly me. This is a pathfinder game and though I will be featuring many house made rules we won't be ...

Hey guys whats up? First time poster long time lurker. I've been thinking about revamping the pathfinder melee classes in my homebrew campaign for a few months now and something somebody said here on the forums gave me an idea, they said something to the effect of "wouldn't it be cool if barbar...
