Score boosts are combat stuff, so of those three only one is actually out of combat. Even bags of holding are used to carry the things you use in combat or use to buy the things you use in combat, so those don't even get a pass for noncombat, as their use still revolves around killing things.

This is true, but you'd have to think of a way to go about it without compromising the fluff.

Thoughts?

My idea was to actually build VoP into a character class, the fluff, not the feat, and then make the class powerful enough to cover the loss of magic items and be a useable class.

But I find the modular blessings idea interesting.

It's not wrong, Armor, weapons, shields, potions, and every thing else I listed is magic, it's not what kinds, I was giving you an idea about the sheer volume of work that would be involved in going through and counting every single different kind of item that contributes to combat, and then figurin...

You don't actually read much of what's posted here, do you? Alright, lets run things down. All the things a character is likely to carry at at mid levels. Weapons: magic, Armor: magic, shield: magic, accessories: magic, potions: magic, wands: magic, rope: not magic, 10 ft pole: not magic, bed roll: ...

take a character with VoP, and one without and compare the numbers side by side of the same level. make NEITHER of them have magic items, and see which fairs better. common sense would tell you that the VoP character would as it was built for the purpose of giving advantage to being under poverty. ...

*sigh* Yes it does. Lets go back to the numbers shall we? Even basic armor and weapons add to your AC and Damage numbers respectively. A wand of cure light wounds restores your HP number. Bags of holding let hold more numbers. BTW a +1 shield/armor costs and extra 1000 GP so a +1 to AC costs 1000 gp...

You don't, but if that oath is, "I will never use armor or magical items" then you need a mechanical construct to actually play.

Well, VoP is really bad for making any sort of Uber Build, so I guess those people when they realized VoP was a steaming pile of shit that was spray painted gold.

What's lost is numbers, what are you not getting. Your numbers with VoP are worse than your numbers with magic items. So the problem isn't that you lose your sweet gear, it's that the numbers you get instead don't make up for losing your sweet gear.

The problem is that a monk can't where armor, but that doesn't mean they're "unarmored" Monks do get magic items which can be very much like armor but, you know, you don't lose all your fancy monk abilities that aren't useful. See the thing of it is, even without armor a monk with VoP is w...

Okay, saying "it wasn't made by WotC so it's not balanced" is almost as big a crock of bull as saying D&D isn't about numbers. First of all, not everything WotC made is balanced, so really using WotC as the basis of what "balance" is is just stupid. Second, seeing as it's on ...

I can tell you exactly what it gave your Githzerai monk, it gave your monk a series of numbers that corresponded with their level. That is exactly what Vow of Poverty is, you may think it's good bit of fluff, and you may be right, but before that it's meant to make you balanced while giving you that...

Okay, let me put it this way, your average level 1 human fighter fighter, 18 strength, 13 dexterity, 14 constitution, 10 intelligence, 10 wisdom, 8 charisma, 12 skill points, 12 hit points, AC 11+whatever number you chose for your armor, their attack bonus is +5, their damage is whatever number rang...

Well, unfortunatly face book games are number five on cracked's list of Five seemingly innocent ways you risk your identity every day. So I don't play them.

Also they're designed to be highly addictive, so there's that.

I think it was something about there only being so many ways you can hit someone. And while yes there are only so many ways to actually punch someone in the face, there are an infinite numbers of ways to deliver and combine punches, kicks, and even stabs to the face. As to elves, so we might at some...

you kind of prove my point there as to where this consensus is coming from..."running the numbers". this is the minmaxxers realm I'll say it, that's probably the stupidest thing I've ever heard. D&D characters are just bundles of numbers wrapped around an idea. Saying you can't figure...

@darkmaster: Vow of Poverty was something done right. simple and down to earth without some outrageous collection of bonuses to it that could be minmax/optimized out of the ass. That is why many people dont like it because they ONLY optimize the character sheet, rather than play a character. No, I ...

No. Vow of Peace/Nonviolence is dumb in a game of murder hobos D&D. Yes, there is an interesting story to be told. But that's the problem, there's one, and it doesn't fit into D&D. VoP does two things wrong. First, the abilities granted, while they seem nice, are actually less powerful than...
