However you still have to deal with the PTSD if the person wasn't on board with the idea of killing people. I think the number of unemployed homeless veterans getting sodas dumped on their heads proves that you clearly don't. There are plenty of kids out there willing to step on land mines in excha...

It kinda sounds like this is turning into Ars Magica. Your "real" character is a fixer with 1000 karma, and you've got a set of 400 karma runners that work for the other players' fixers.

Wow, so it's okay to kill something on sight as long as it isn't humanoid? :p It's okay to kill something on sight if it's incapable of deciding to coexist with society. If a creature simply tries to kill and eat everything it sees, it's a menace to everything and needs to be put down if you want t...

I don't get it, myself. If they're humanoids, you do the same thing you would do to designate a group of humans as "these are bad guys and you should stab them to gain in- and out-of-character bennies": they have swords and are pointing them at you. if you come across a group of humanoids ...

Oh, man. The idea that Trump is a plant by left-wingnuts to get red voters to go back to work and die of an engineered super-flu, while the Democrats stay home all summer and then sweep the election warms the cockles of my frozen vampire heart.

The problem with kender wasn't the design, it was the roleplaying prompt. The way most people trolled their so-called friends was DM: You take 43 damage from the fireball. Wizard: Wow, that's a lot. I thought this ring granted 15 fire resistance? DM: It does, but the kender stole it. Wizard: <throws...

It is very much a game of snowballing. Either you get a good start, build a strong economy, and out-tech everyone else from 2250 onwards; or you don't, and some genocidal empire on the other side of the galaxy gets too big for the AI to stop, and it's just a matter of time until they reach your door...

Re: Building things from scratch: Design Principles.

Well, I don't mind digging up fifteen year old conversations just to throw in my shower thoughts. I'd much prefer a system in which you could intuit the fact that someone was weak to swording because they relied upon non-sword attacks preferentially. Is there anything wrong with the Fire Emblem RPS ...

it is factually true that the wealth by level numbers aren't high enough to deliver the experience people want in the level range of 5-10, which is a surprisingly big problem considering home much people gravitate to exactly that level range of play for other reasons. I think one of the reasons peo...

I think adding new base classes is probably a mistake. You're going to be adding new content for various base classes across expansion books, so new base classes are basically wasted space. EDIT: because they will get progressively smaller in the pants vs. the basic classes in the base book as more...

It's a shame there has never been a remotely decent mythos RPG, that would make a hell of a final twist. The eldritch abomination at the end of this book is in fact Dracula. I know my table would get a kick out of it.

We have a strict don’t ask/don’t tell policy, because you can’t possibly make it gayer than it already is and we’re tired of the joke you’re about to tell, ya damn newbie.

... I guess I think to much as an programmer and not enough as a RPG designer. It's a common issue we have. The first thing that comes to mind is you basically play a different RPG, only with Pokemans!! Pokemon has always had that vast gulf of power in its playerbase. I had one friend who would play like a gym trainer: all ice types, all grass types, etc. I had another friend who challenged me to a duel with "our random campaign team, before we beat the final four". His team was six level...

Easy answer: tech attacks aren’t basic combat options like trip and disarm, they’re class features like sneak attack or feats like whirlwind attack.

Mooks simply don’t get them because they’re Warriors, not Fighters.

Re: Balancing 4+ PC's vs 1 Boss Fight in D&D, tech attacks

On the other hand, once you have overcorrected defenses so hard that people can't damage a boss monster without a combined attack, you have total freedom to balance combined attacks against boss monsters separately from regular attacks against regular monsters. Which does let you be lazy in a nice ...
