Something missing from this is an itinerary of what sort of things the Head Master (Mister Cavern) needs to run his Students (Players) through. After all, he has to he has to meet the government's educational standards, even if he can personally 'school' the Prime Minister/President/Dictator for Lif...

Super Normal . They're so average, it would be amazing if it wasn't so normal. These guys have the power to disappear in a crowd. They're just so generic that people will forget that they're there, or even not realize it when they aren't. The only reason this particular one get any screen time is b...

Mostly, I'm thinking aloud. As hogarth points out, it's not a good fix. But I do think it's better since you can stay level appropriate. It just opens up way more ways to break the game. ------- An issue I have with your system, Angel, is that in some ways it breaks immersion into fine powder. I can...

Can you show me an example of what one of the gishes or mystic theruges would look like? I'm pretty lost. Sure. Well start with the theurge, since that one is the easiest. As it works right now, a class level fits into a character level like a panel in a slot. So, you begin as a wizard and reach le...

3.X Alternate Multi-classing idea (decade too late)
This has been going on in my head for the past few weeks. 3e multi-classing makes things hard to balance. What it looks like is that you can be a level 20 whatever and have all the power that entails, or you can do all sorts of things by taking different classes. What actually is happens is that you...

I have a couple of game ideas I want to run. I'm in a few other games, so I may not be able to run them, but if one of my time slots open... 1) The party works for a Genie on the Plane of Air. The game will be set up to run episodic missions, and working for the Genie will be optional after the firs...

I once considered having the number of bonus skill points be based upon all your attributes, but the extra skill points could only go towards a skill that used that attribute. That is, your strength bonus gave you X skills points which you could allocate towards strength based skills (Climb, Jump, S...

I just started playing Clerics. I don't know why I never looked at them in depth before, but I noticed a significant difference between Planar Binding and Planar Ally . What I see is that a Wizard can diplomazine, bully or bribe a genie as appropriate, getting away with cheap Wish es. A Cleric (usin...

One idea I had for reducing 'misses' was to keep track of separate ACs and their bonuses. At base AC 10, a roll result of 5 or less was the attacker just sucking. Then their DEX mod, dodge and luck bonuses was added on, and results in that range were the defender being deft or lucky. Then next tier ...

Skill Systems: How do I basket in hole?
Something that has been loitering in the back of my head for a while is the various skill systems. In my own design projects, I've been continuously looking at current paradigms and trying to copy them, but have been consistently left unsatisfied with the results. For instance, in my last draft of S...

The most common thing I've read wizards doing is affecting probability, luck and human behaviour more than anything else. More often than not, a magical boost on a shield just makes weapons not work right, magic boots granting courage or a sense of direction, and spells effecting monster behaviour m...

You want to have sex appeal for the game but the problem is making it too sexy. Tasteful sexiness is completely doable. It's not even hard at all. For females, stick to the 40% Rule. I don't know what the equivalent is for men, but I think well kept facial hair and a modest combination of fat, musc...

Catharz, what if you couldn't purchase the same class level more than once? My point wasn't that purchasing a class's first level more than once was broken or not; it was that barbarian 1/soldier 1/ranger 1/sorcerer 1/druid 1 would give numbers massively divergent from any 3rd level single-classed ...

I'm thinking feats are to have increasing benefits with each tier, as opposed to at arbitrary character points. Remember that I'm doing away with character levels as well as monster levels, letting players stay in the bottom tier forever, gaining little bonuses to get a little bit better, but stayin...

Class Packages Independent of Level
It started off with me trying to come up with a better multi-classing paradigm that would let people have exactly the class combinations they wanted, but without the crappy limitation that dual spell casters fall behind spectacularly. From the AD&D books I have, it looks like the multi-classing ...

Resolution Mechanic for an Instant Battle
We are all familiar with the scene. Our protagonist has is out of options. He can either run away like a sissy, or be a man and walk right up and confront the Big Bad like a boss. Obviously, the hero has the resolve to stand up for what's right; we wouldn't have a story about a scardy-cat. Out of a ...

So for your naval-esque space battle system you forget to name every single naval-esque space battle system including Starfleet Battles, Babylon 5, and Battleship Gothic? To be honest, I haven't played either of those. Actually, aside from some stat sheets for Starfleet Battles, I can't recall even...
