For what it's worth, Scion 1E, Exalted 1E, and Exalted 2E played around with virtues. In Scion the virtues changed depending on your character's pantheon.

What did you end up going with? I went with the default rules. We were already playing with a wet-erase battle map, which at least added some color, literally.
