Re: Rock Paper Scissors Design Does Nothing

Been playing a lot of Battletech recently and that game has great degrees of RPS. Speed v Range v Initiative. Surprisingly speed and initiative are not synonymous. Going fast increase evasion. Being steady and firing from a safe place is accurate. Acting first trumps Speed. Being fast trumps snipers...

Re: Handling Modern Sensibilities in a Western RPG

Yes, it's important to note that your setting can be racist as shit without you, your players, or their characters being racist as shit. The GM already has to wear the 'antagonistic asshole' hat sometimes, so just because Sheriff Cracker says he'll lynch any black people in his town after sunset do...

Re: Handling Modern Sensibilities in a Western RPG

If you want to make a modern setting based on the old west, the first thing you need to do is stop using the phrase “Old West.” That’s a white-washed picket fence of American history. I didn't use that phrase. No, I guess you didn’t. But it’s implied. If you don’t want casual racism, then don’t sta...

If you want to make a modern setting based on the old west, the first thing you need to do is stop using the phrase “Old West.” That’s a white-washed picket fence of American history. You could just focus on actual history that is otherwise a footnote in approved US history. For example, a game focu...

Re: Rogue. Fighter, same thing really

What about conditional Precision damage based on, i dunno, certain skill ranks? Then you get dippers who take the Fighter class for precision damage and continue on as a Wizard who gets all the skill points. Precision damage has to be based on class level. Otherwise, fighter is even more enticing t...

Re: Rogue. Fighter, same thing really

Then just change the name ‘sneak attack’ to ‘precision strike’ keep the mechanics and remove the flavor.

Then players can just call it what they want.

Thief dudes will still call it sneak attack.
Knight dudes will call it precision strike.
Sniper dudes will call it headshots.

Re: [Phil Swift Voice] "THAT'S A LOTTA GODS"--The planes sure seem crowded...

Squirreled away somewhere on a harddrive I salvaged from a PC are writeups for all the Greyhawk Gods for RuneQuest. It's a pretty good document and I wish I could tell you to DM me so I could send it to you. The way I've treated gods since any edition of D&D as far back as I can remember is that...

Re: "In my game the Mental Attributes are..."

I'm obviously using a simple list of basic things that have been skills in D&D game, despite this system probably more appropriately being a dicepool system, instead of inventing an attribute and skill system for the purpose of this forum post. It's pointless to propose reason against arguments...

Re: "In my game the Mental Attributes are..."

Magic and knowledge makes you MORE susceptible to malign influence, not less. This is kind of dumb because of the previous responses and generally speaking, the more you roll dice the more you are likely to fail. Stabby, high Fortitude characters are more likely to fail at Fortitude things because ...

Re: "In my game the Mental Attributes are..."

I tossed around the idea of just having Fortitude, Reflex and Will as Attributes and dropping everything else. Then I ran into Blades in the Dark and it turns attributes and skills upside down. Your Fortitude doesn’t describe how strong or tough you are it’s the other way around. The number of ranks...

Re: Rerolls on d20s from ability score point pools

As I’ve seen it play out in BiTD, The purpose of the clock is directly related to the mission, the amount of tension the MC wants, and the degree of risk. The MC explains what the clock means and it’s outcome. So if the scene is stealthing through a heavily fortified bandit camp, the clock might hav...

Re: Rerolls on d20s from ability score point pools

The stealth minigame being binary pass/fail isn't really addressed by adding rerolls, or by fiddling with the dice mechanic at all. The rerolls decrease the chance of failure, but so does adding a static bonus, and you could map the number of rerolls to an equivalent bonus with some relatively easy...

Escape Artist (Dex) check to squeeze into something, with set DCs by RAW for every reasonable space... And some unreasonable, such as a 3-inch hole for epic Rogues.
RAW skill checks get proficiency bonuses.

Re: Rerolls on d20s from ability score point pools

Maybe a strength check to bend bars or lift gates should be a Saving Throw instead of an attribute check. Maybe Attribute checks in general are just dumb a dumb idea all around. I think attribute checks have their place. If you and I are trying to squeeze through a narrow passage in a natural cave,...

Don’t Fighters get a proficiency bonus on Strength checks or something like that?

Why not use 2d10 or 3d6 instead of d20 to resolve checks?

It will just be an empty book cover. You can tear your favourite pages out of existing books from any edition you like and stick them in the cover in whatever order you like.
Growing up with a trapper-keeper, I might actually buy that.

Re: D&D, multiple attacks, and an alternative

Having recently played a session of 5E as a sub-optimal 14th level ranger against 3 Dragonborn bruisers and a "lightning wyvern" that got both a bite and a sting attack, I dropped from 101HP to -14 in one round. This was fifteen individual to-hits. The other PCs, faced with similar situati...

Re: D&D, multiple attacks, and an alternative

In the OP's original link, DM David suggests that the reason 5E didn't go with a single attack that does a lot of damage is that bounded accuracy still makes fighters whiff a lot. I have a OCR game on my hard drive that gives every class a Fray dice. This is a die of damage that can be applied to a ...
