Re: Damage [Spellbound]

And, if there is any criticism this is where it happens: what’s your design goal and what are the thematic elements you want to encourage? You listed damage and sizes in a chart and also mentioned injury tracks and damage types and I’m not sure what’s important to you. And, I kind of think you’re a...

Re: Minion power transfer I guess?

PL, your ramblings lack context and specific examples, and also are complaining about things you yourself are doing. I don't mind criticism but you're being actively unhelpful. Please leave the thread. ... but PL is largely correct here. It's hard to even consider what you have here as an idea, it'...

Re: Random 5e homebrew

in 5e, just hitting a ghost enough times with a mundane club will work, no need to get fancy. but if you can leave it alone, that's even better.

Re: Random 5e homebrew

Well, I think another perspective is, especially in a sandbox, sometimes PCs encounter things more dangerous then their CR. Frostmaiden in particular tries to drive some of this home, and it fits in with the theme of a remorseless, brutal, never ending winter that exists because a god of Winter is m...

Re: Random 5e homebrew

There is admittedly some dubious low level encounters in the beginning of the module, and since it starts pretty much as a sandbox, it is easy enough for uncaring or unprepared GMs to not help guide the PCs away from the more deadly ones. Like every module there's plenty of bullshit, but overall muc...

First, rules nit : https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#:~:text=A%20spell%20cast%20with%20a,casting%20time%20of%201%20action. Re: Damage [Spellbound]

That's a lofty goal. One that I've never seen executed beyond one or two conditions in an RPG. I've seen shock and wounds. I've seen stability and armor damage. When it comes to humans, and I think deaddmwalking said this too, all damage is rashes and scars and loss of limbs. I can only image that ...

Re: Damage [Spellbound]

I’d just use damage types to tag attack effects. Nothing’s more boring than learning you took 7 points of damage. And, if you tag damage. You can grant characters resistance to certain types. And maybe the degree of resistance let’s you pick necrotic/radiant. And, the next level divine or the one y...

Re: Random 5e homebrew

Careful with the double concentration, that lets you set up no-save autokill combos like sickening radiance + forcecage. Maybe that's the intent, but there are a lot of nasty one-two punches that can get activated with a 2 level fighter dip for action surge. I'm not too concerned on a few levels, b...

Re: Damage [Spellbound]

I find it pointless as in 'fire' might as well be 'purple' if it doesn't actually light things on fire sometimes or cause things to heat up. And, I think I would prefer to bake that in as standard / formalize it, instead of expecting the description of fireball or meteor swarm to have a line or two ...

Re: Damage [Spellbound]

It's interesting, and it's not like my threads are generating much feedback as it is. Let's see, Cold-Necrotic could be 'viral'? hehe or 'disease'? Cold-Radiant would be bacteria? maybe Radiation? But this still goes back to my view that just tagging damage as [type] feels like fluff until it hooks ...

Re: Damage [Spellbound]

Does your game have weapon reach difference between a dagger and longsword? It can be more exciting to move away from D&Disms and look at it from what we know now, like "I can kill with a dagger and a sword in one blow, but the latter has longer reach for a straight up fight" Weapon p...

Re: Damage [Spellbound]

I’ve read some arguments that thunder, force and bludgeon should all be treated as the same damage type. This doesn't seem viable or interesting to me? Of course I don't list thunder or sonic as a damage source, and maybe I should? I’m a fan of psychic damage and I’ve seen them used to simulate psi...

Re: Rock Paper Scissors Design Does Nothing

I've refrained from posting in this thread because The first post seemed like the last post -- RPS design isn't very good for a ttrpg, end of story. And I don't even think anyone is really even arguing against the premise to start with, but of course PL could quote someone saying something to the co...

Re: Damage [Spellbound]

Is it possible that a single hit will take out an enemy? If my damage roll is 1d6 then 1/36 times I'd be expected to roll max damage on two rolls in a row; what does that look like and it is a problem if I crush my enemies so easily 3% of the time? What about if I roll min damage 2x in a row and de...

Re: Damage [Spellbound]

You probably want to stay away from 'madness' as a condition. In general I agree, that was mostly an idea / note to myself -- It's more interesting to me if damage has possibly other additional riders depending on the damage type, besides just 'fluff'. There are advantages and disadvantages to havi...

Re: Perception [Spellbound]

Encounter distance is always 'the map' since I'm not trying to have regular combats at huge range and I don't think there's a significant reason to vary the distance any further. While I am sympathetic to constraints inherit in playing a given game, ultimately I fall on the other side (especially i...

Re: Perception [Spellbound]

I have reorganized the perception section to push the tables to the back. Added a little clarifying text. The ruleset still needs numerous things, DCs for searching (secret doors, hidden compartments, finding the relevant letter in a stack of papers, etc), and more tables of DCs in general. Also nee...

The moon reflects a heck of a lot of lot considering it's a ball of rock. If it was an actual mirror, we'd be in real trouble.
A mirror moon would be a pretty cool campaign setting detail though.
