Re: D&D 5e has failed

5e has rules that are far more easily ignored because people can get the basics and ignore the specifics. 5e has an absurd amount of specifics but nobody cares. They just wanna roll their d20 in their casual beer n' pretzels TTRPG.

Re: Races of War

Hard to imagine why anyone would write like 30 times the amount of rules of all of 5e to address 5e problems. At that point you are deep into the already borderline "why not just make your own game" position. I've watched this happen no less than three times now with various independent d...

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Sounds like it's gonna be rough.

I'm just waiting for the full thing to come out so I can low-effort hack it into Shadowrun for a friend of mine.

I heard they're going to take a page from Witcher and allow dodge rolls against firearms if you have 10 reflexes, so maybe it'll be a bit better? I do know they're going to HP rather than the wound track.

Well, from what I ran of it, Melee Weapons were often slower than guns due to a lower ROF and the ability to headshot someone was fairly easy to get if you had a proper high skill and a high ROF weapon. Movement was abstracted unless you used a grid, which the game didn't really encourage, but you'd...

Lancer is basically a Hack of Shadow of the Demon Lord, and that game while a mess certainly had some interesting mechanics. Lancer itself is kind of hypserspecific, its mechanics really force a certain style of game. Though I could totally see a fantasy hack of Lancer about being cool dudes who fly...

The Feat + ASI setup a few groups I know have settled on is Feat and a +1 ASI with some feats costing the whole ASI (primarily Sharpshooter and Great Weapon Master).

5e has falling damage.

https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/5e_SRD:Falling

1d6 bludgeoning damage per 10 feet fallen and you land prone. Funnily enough the damage is typed and it's nonmagical, meaning that the Wyvern in question is immune to falling damage.

Honestly I think it's kind of emblematic of the kind of game 5e is that a lot of the interesting tactical options for mundane characters are locked entirely to the Battlemaster Fighter subclss.

I don't disagree with odin about flight and warlocks in 5e, but I also remember the flying warlock he played in a 5e game with me that got pin-cushioned often while my shitty monk sort of just didn't. The real path to ultimate 5e power is to hire like 10 archers to pal around with you. Also heads u...

Let me break this some more. Agonizing blast is the obvious shoe-in. Solves all damage needs forever. Lance of Lethargy can only be used once per round on one target, reducing their speed by 10 feet...but once per round for one character. You get three warlocks with it and all of a sudden a single t...

So, with the Aarakocra, is that two sources of level 1 flight? Yep. And Aarakocra just so happens to synergize okay with an archer based Fighter build, meaning you can have four short-rest based classes with the average DPR of a Fighter, Warlocks with their higher base damage and the Fighter with t...

SCAG has dumb things like player character options that can fly forever from level 1 that just so happens to synergize with Warlock, which is a class that is so versatile at this point (thanks to XGtE) you could justify a party of three of the flying bastards (Hexblade, Celestial, your choice of cas...

I...well damn. Uh....I didn't expect a response this good and from your answers I definitely bungled the question at some point or another, because I was also asking how like...people have this weird loose sense of 'realism' around some classes or archetypes but not others. Desperately trying to not...

Why 'Realism' in Fantasy?

No this is not a fighter thread, I'm pretty sure the class is settled at this point. My question is about the prevalence of the idea that some classes need to be bound to some vague-ish concept of 'realism' in D&D and other 'Fantasy' pursuits. I understand there's some crazy grognard shit about ...

I don't know, it seems like he's ramping up book production if we consider Eberron, Wildemount, Rick and Morty vs D&D, and the Stranger Things set as all happening under him. We might be looking at two to four books per year.

I gotta say, one of the things I hate the most about 5e (not one of the worst things, that list is far too long, just a major pet peeve) is the thing where ability boosts and feats went from things everyone got for free in 3e and 4e to things that take up a slot on the class table in 5e as if they ...

I understand nerfing spellcasters but I find 5e went a bit overkill on the 'normal' problem spells that delete combats and left all the out of combat utility alone. So now the only way for spellcasters to deal with combat is direct damage (Fireball and the like) or the standard fare of no save spell...

The problem is the trap scaling is so bad that devoted trapfinders only find the trap 25% of the time and traps usually have a 90-ish percent chance of dropping you down multiple dying ranks and maybe even putting doomed on you.

Good god the amount of brain rot in that thread is astounding. A lot of people are actually defending dropping traps on players that are 3 or more levels above them in 'level very much matters' edition. From what I can tell, traps are designed to be balanced for the level they're encountered at like...

Re: The concept of 'organic' growth in D&D

The key is that 3rd edition made magic items available but rare . That is, you could have whatever specific magic items you wanted, but the expected number of magic items you'd have at one time was very low. A fucking tenth level Fighter wouldn't be expected to have a backup magic dagger. And might...

Re: The concept of 'organic' growth in D&D

Specifically regarding magic items in Earthdawn, they get more powerful as the character using them unlocks more of the item's story. Something that starts out as a +1 sword can become a crazy powerful artifact if the character does the right things. One item (a bow) required the character to give ...
