3.5 Lacks Discipline!

Not whips and chains, but just some constraints. [br][br]Playing CoH last night, it occurred to me that one of the problems w/ 3.5 is that there are no external restraints on how the game is designed. There's nothing telling the designers "this shouldn't be done" except for their own judgm...

Re: Check my PaO Revision

I was going to say that this version of PAO seems kinda bland. It seems to be a very limited, if higher level, version of Rary's Mnemonic Enhancer, in that it lets you blow an 8th level slot to get the choice of casting one of a small number of lower-level spells. I generally don't see that as a goo...

I agree w/ Josh, Flight isn't any bigger a deal than a Monk's uberspeed and a longbow. It's keeping things at range that borks CR values to nothing.

Hmm. I'm sensing. . . Lawful Neutral perhaps? :)

The main reason I asked about the barter is that a lot of historic societies had bizaare rules about who could trade w/ who, but even the most totalitarian usually observed those rules mostly in the breach. Just curious about Redarkan's take.

Re: Arcana Unearthed

That works for Sleeping Beauty, but many of my adventures involve a BBEG that evolve over time. At first, the BBEG seems not so bad (Maleficent). Here, we can get off a good Evil Plan + Bwa-ha-ha-ha moment. But I don't want to give away the whole evil plan - the players need to figure that out. This...

Re: A Curious Defense of the Difference Engine

Good point. But still, in the "ideal" game, you should be able to have a near-infinite number of deck types. The goal is to have a character that's the equivilant of a burn-horde-control deck that's playable. Maybe it loses out in the min-max wars to other characters, but it's playable.[br...

Re: Stupid Summon Tricks

As a rule of thumb, I always let the highest level Summon Monster summon one of something the players have recently fought (or are fighting). For example, in Eberron, they just finished fighting a bunch of Living Spells, the most uber of which was a Living Cloudkill. Later in the same adventure, the...

I see what you're saying, but I agree w/ Mr. Weasel. Here's a side question. If D&D didn't have alignment, and so there was no reason to debate how many baby kobolds a paladin could kill before turning evil, would the WotC boards only have posts about screwing over wishes by players?

I love that too, but some of my players don't. Sad DM moment: The BBEG gets set to make his uberspeech in the climactic battle, and in midphrase the sorcerer says, "I cast Polymorph and turn him into a banana slug." One fumbled save later, the adventure ends . . .

Well, I'm opposed to the "can't do it" school of hiding, or any skill for that matter. Whatever a player wants to try, I'm going to let them try. If a player wants to climb a glass wall covered w/ oil, wearing flipflops and her hands tied behind her back, I'd let them try. Same with trying...

I'd go w/ 2. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to debate how many baby kobolds a Paladin could kill and not be evil. I'd miss that.[br][br]Josh, could you run a Good v. Evil campaign just be making up some mechanics as easily as just taking out the mechanics if you didn't like alignment? I'm not sure.
