Theoretically? OK. I agree with you.

Practically speaking? No dice.

Every single person I play with basically plays for the two KODT player pacifiers - loot and XP. People like getting magical stuff that makes their characters better.

Now you have a dilemma. Do you spend your cash on a resurrection for the poor lad, or keep it to maintain your edge? There's no right answer here; either one is bad for someone. It's uncomfortable and awkward, and not a game I want to be playing. IMO, that's the route to madness. Do I buy the +5 Ho...

I don't think 4E sucks. But a lot of it isn't working very well, and it doesn't really help to say, "Golly, the DM can fix that when the problem comes up. I love 4E!"

So. . . Stealth, eh?

I don't have a lot to add to the philosophical musings in this thread . The only problems I remember from 3E was that stealth usually required concealment, and that negated sneak attacks, but otherwise the system seemed to work well enough. So I'm wondering why they mucked everything up. What do you...

4E=MMO FAIL

It seems clear that WotC intended 4E to play more like an MMO, with power progressions, defined roles, and monster battles that act like an MMO. Why they thought it was a good idea to create a PnP game simulating a computer game simulating a PnP game is anybody's guess, but there you go. They failed...

Which begs the question, why no Taunt for defenders? It's the signature Tank ability, and it's gone. Why? It's almost like WotC said, "Hmmm. An ability that lets Fighters perfectly perfrom that protect-the-party role. nah, let's just give them a minor to-hit debuff instead."

And again, my main point was. . . Fly? Really? Moving twice as fast as a monster was all you had to do to much up the game, and now that's handed out to everybody.

Defender isn't an MMO term, although confusingly it's the CoH name for healers. The MMO terms come largely from coding. Debuffs affect mobs differently than mezzes. Depending on the game, and the code, scaling has to be different. No, its the 4e term. For fighters. People like to babble that they'r...

Mearl just keeps on giving. It was related to “everybody can fly all day long” that was a problem in previous editions. Does anybody remember this being a problem? Anyone? Teleport. Kind of a problem. Excessive mobility period. That was kind of a problem, in that balance became difficult if "I...

In MMO's, which is where 4E gets its terms, Control powers affect a mobs abilities to move. Those are going to be Mezzes - Holds, Stuns, Immobs, and Sleeps. Because 4E is turn based instead of RTS, some of the terms don't translaste directly, but robbing of attacks is a debuff b/c it limits, but doe...

Reading between the lines, what Mearls is saying is that 4E can't have multiclassing because it's complicated if it actually matters. But actually, the fact that multiclassing is even contemplated means that 4E simply is a self-referential pit of stupid. Classes are supposed to have roles. A Wizard ...

Greater Invisibility? Really? Wowzers, now you can not attack for EVEN LONGER! Yes, 4e Greater Invisibility at level 16 is slightly weaker than 3e Invisibility at level 3. It's still character advancement, and it's no worse than a single-classed wizard or rogue would get. I wonder whether 4th editi...

But I can tell you that water vapor is more of a greenhouse gas than CO2 ever will be. That's another red herring. Lots of things are better greenhouse gasses than CO2. Methane, for instance. (As an aside, it's not CO2 that matters, but carbon, in whatever form). The issue isn't whether a chemical ...

1. Rules for respec. 2. Roleplaying does not affect gamebalance. The fact that my Guardian of the Temple of Ra has to tithe 99% of his income to the Temple and can't eat cheese doesn't make him any more powerful than an ordinary warrior. 3. Cheese is delicious. Every PC should have something other p...

Here's the real kick in the nuts: once you blow your wad on those four feats, that's it. Why should building a world matter? It's not like the PC's can really do anything to affect it. 4E doesn't even have the crafting system of a good MMO, even making a potion is a zero sum game.

We should just face the facts, 4E is a combat simulator, not a RPG.

Is anything funnier than the idea of a standard 3.x encounter taking an hour? Did they just ban SoD spells and any attack that did more than 20 points of damage? The last 3.x battle I was in lasted exactly 3 dice rolls.
