I don't think that the mechanics are absurd or unclearly worded, they're just not so strongly worded as to disallow people from describing their setup action in ways that don't make as much sense. That's not a mechanic failing, that's just not wanting to waste space talking down to people. You've go...

I would hope that you do have to be running to have a "running start", though. The mental image of strolling twenty feet and then jumping is not merely absurd, its deranged. It's not deranged, it's just a standing jump. Seriously though, it's not a big deal. In any action limited t...

You know what's really weird? Shadowrun actively encourage you to dodge the most detailed and tactical part of the rules system--namely the combat system--and encourages people to pretty much do what we're bitching about here. That is, roll dice until the plot advances. How come that system never g...

Isn't the reason the combat mini-game succeeds at all because a large number of relatively minor successes from a wide assortment of skills and powers spread over lots of contributors can come together to equal one important success? This doesn't quite get there Lago. I can't tell if you're tagging ...

As for the skill: Does a running start actually require the character to be running? Because the default wording (don't recall seeing if this fix changed that) is just "twenty feet in a straight line before jumping". I'm positive that it isn't meant to work out so that "speed above 3...

http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Time_Walker_%28DnD_Class%29 Anyone else understand this? It's interesting, but a lot of the abilities are plot devices, and the ones that aren't, are not that impressive. It's a DM class apparently; since it's powered by fiat it doesn't need to compete in ways that matt...

Elennsar: It's taken for granted that players will outgrow challenges, because that's what they do by virtue of gaining levels. If I didn't want that I'd play a level frozen game or I'd cap things at 5 or 6 where they're not crazy yet. If I just wanted a lower magic game over larger challenge levels...

Elennsar: in this thread, it's just you. Your alternate solution completely works, but is basically the same thing you said before when you were bitching about spells and was already rejected. Your point about spending different resources on different things is true, but largely irrelevant. Characte...

Gotcha. Well, you can allow people to combine their high jump with their ground movement as a full round action. You move up to your base rate from your starting point (including running start) and make one high jump in there as well, allowing you to clear a single really high obstacle or land atop ...

Tarkis: Noted, thanks. Changes are in the new version. I've made multi-jumping better, and fixed the rule for jumps with penalties. I kept a target distance in and made it work better, so that you couldn't run to 10' from the edge of a pit, roll, fail, and decide you only wanted to jump to the edge...

Making everything magic power level would be fine...if it was actually magic-by-any-other-name. Spells? Not necessary. But if it functions as well as an ability disrupted in an antimagic field, why it should continue working in one is a touch bizzare. Nothing wrong with Charles Atlas Superpowers, b...

Actual Jump thoughts time IGTN: The long jump could probably be worded differently. You might say instead that you make a check, determine max distance jumped, halve it if you didn't have a running start, and then pick a point within that distance to land in. Unless I'm up in crazy town, where doubl...

Which, if we were playing a game where it wouldn't just make more sense to merge Jump with Climb and Swim anyway (because being able to jump was supposed to be special), would be alright. But when magic is rendering it a bad skill, either we need to fix the magic or make it necessary to use Jump (a...

I can see three possible uses for jumping: 1) Move faster, quickly get over floor obstacles in combat. 2) Cross chasms and such. 3) Jumping combat stunts. 1) If this counts as running and we're still limited to counting squares you jump against your move in this round (or next when you land), then ...

At this point any moderate skill consolidation is probably worth doing (since skills are worth such different amounts, throwing more points at players doesn't work as well), and you can justify lots of pairings. I'd rather have a system where the skills mattered more on their own or we could boost t...

I still like the idea of mixing up the ranger with the specific abilities of the Horizon Walker. Just fold in the bonuses of the Walker into the ranger at each level. Of course, this gives him a planar feel and I don't know how to reconcile that factor. Thanks for that Cynic, that's not a bad idea ...

You missed the larger point though (which I didn't properly make anyway): losing one specific racial trait does not make you a non-member of that race when a race is defined by several things. It makes you a bit of a freak within that race, but that's it. Yeah. But with any penalty, if you let peop...

Tarkis: and should come with some sort of "yes you can opt out of racial ability modifiers, but you might be a pariah/freak and deal with ridicule/have to pay for sex". Hell, maybe even allowing a character to opt out of or replace any of those things might be worth it, since it opens up ...
