Frank, Truly, feel free to knock my review. I posted my thoughts and tried to include as much math as I could for the benefit of those on the forum. Despite a degree in engineering, I don't have the patience that many on the Den have to pick apart the math seven ways from Sunday. If you would like, ...

Could you give some more information about what class features classes have? Sure. As Apalala pointed out, the Soldier is a rather powerful melee (or ranged) combatant. His "game changer" at level 14: One in a Million which grants an automatic 20 (which counts as a threat) on an attack ch...

@ Taleran
Not specifically stated one way or the other; however, my read is that you would have to spend your starting feat on it. This seems consistent with the mechanical benefits that are derived from the feats. Not necessarily equal but consistent.

A clarification: You can't gish to get all the core abilities. You only ever gain the core ability of the first Base Class you enter - the core abilities of all other Base Classes are unavailable to you . emphasis present in original I'm getting the family ready for church so I'll post a longer answ...

Wrap Up

Wrap Up covers my final thoughts. I like it. Magic system aside, the books is well written and flows better than most games I have recently read. Hell, better than most in my history and my personal library. Mechanically, it will play differently but should fit my needs very well. (Again, the magic...

Chapter 7: Worlds

Chapter 7: Worlds is the GM/everything else chapter. Really they could have thrown in a picture of a kitchen sink and it would not have been amiss. The chapter opens with a longer and more detailed description of the eras and recommending that you pick a primary era for the game world. This is foll...

Frank,

Was the question to me or Apalala? I'll take a stab at what I think you are asking.

Combat in general is still d20 + BAB + mods versus defense (in lieu of AC). There are combat actions (tricks mostly) that are skill based.

Is that the vein you were asking?

Chapter 6: Foes

Chapter 6: Foes covers all the potential NPC opposition that you could face. Traps - dungeon size that is - are covered in Chapter 7. This chapter starts off with the NPC build rules. Each NPC is created using steps to choose Size, mobility and movement method(s), attributes (if different from 10),...

Grappling in particular is worrisome. You make an opposed athletics check and you snatch a person up until they can win a roll. If they're three or so size categories bigger than you, or if you don't have any ranks in athletics, you can fall right off the RNG and are effectively helpless. You can't...

So with a basically non-functional magic system and apparently no monster book or usable word, what exactly is the point? -Username17 As noted previously, monsters are coming up in Chapter 6 and the World building, GM advice, optional rules, etc. is in Chapter 7. I will have Chapter 6 up later toda...

Chapter 5: Combat

Chapter 5: Combat "Let's get ta fightin'!" As most folks have played multiple OGL games, I'll review this chapter by exception and answer any specifics that people feel I have left off. Iterative attacks are gone. So are attacks of opportunity. So are attack/move actions. So are insane, t...

Chapter 4: Forge

Chapter 4: Forge is the gear chapter but is more than that at the same time. The game uses the silver standard but acknowledges that other standards can be used limited only by imagination. Dwarven gems, goblin gold, elven leaves of precious metal with mithryl vein, etc. Why is this important? Flav...

Chapter 3: Grimoire

Chapter 3: Grimoire is, theoretically, the magic chapter. This is, by far, the worst written chapter in the entire book. It also garnered a spot on my personal worst written chapters in all of gaming. I read the rules - all 3.5 pages of them ... twice and was still confused. I checked out the forum...

Chapter 2: Lore

Chapter 2: Lore covers Action Dice, Skills and Feats. Action Dice: These have been used in other systems so there is probably some familiarity with them. If not, action dice are nifty bonus / rules modifications that can represent your chacter's drive, luck or even the will of the gods. First level...

Chapter 1: Hero

Chapter 1: Hero This chapter covers attributes, Origins, Classes (including a few Expert classes) and interests. Attributes are standard OGL fare. Nothing to see here, move along. Well, not entirely true: attributes are purchased as a point-buy. I priced the DnD elite array (15,14,13,12,10,8 ) with...

Fantasy Craft Review

Having been a fan of the Spycraft2.0 rules and realizing that the fantasy genre is home when I game, it only seemed natural that I would get Fantasy Craft when I heard that it was coming out. Now, I'd like to take a few moments and offer a review of that work. This review will not focus exclusively ...

A good thing to remember about Shadowrun (fluff wise) is that the world is simply too busy to really care about you. Sure, a mage could do that. However, that means he has less time to do other stuff. In a completely profit driven world, the longer you have been away from the scene of the crime the ...

The other option would be to have a Dune-like universe where personal force fields are so prevalent that most projectile weapons are ineffective. In that [/i] situation melee weapons make a certain amount of sense. However, that renders guns - as stated - ineffective. So it really is a binary choice...

Yeah, there are some quirks with the NPC generation system. They were there with Spycraft2.0 and from the preview info, most of that NPC system got ported over to MasterCraft (the Fantasy Craft engine). I'm on the Crafty Forums too and the devs frequently participate. It was a conscious choice as th...

Let me clarify my original thought a little better. It depends greatly on how you define civilization. By my reading only walled towns count as civilized (ie "light") whereas an undefended hamlet is not civilization. If we disagree on that simple point then we will reach very different con...

As a matter of opinion (which by definition - in this case at least - is not defensible) I do not accept the book's definition as I find it leads to insanity in the game world.

Lago PARANOIA wrote:... there has to be civilization to interact with.
You are defining Light as Civilization. While that is a valid interpretation, it is not one that I would choose to use. I would contend that GoA is correct in his own interpretation.

you could always go back to the past and use a percentile based skill success chance like AD&D.
