Perhaps the DC to identify for sure should be 20 - Creature CR, like with spotting a magic item.

It's my favorite way to run monsters. Minimal work on my part, but players are still left partially in the dark. If they make the Knowledge checks or whatever I tell them what the check says they get to know, which isn't everything, so they still have to guess a bit. It's great.

Oh yeah, I should ask, my Sustained spells go out once I fall unconscious, right? We were on a run, and I had Invis on myself and Increase Reflexes on the Troll gunslinger, and then I got knocked out when we were taken behind by a nasty nasty shock glove user (I was hit for 20 Stun in the first atta...

Wait what? All Concrete in the 2070s is actually metallic Ferrocrete? Well... so just about every large building wall ever is composed almost entirely of metal-type materials? Sounds sweet. So I guess if you had Shape Metal, Shape Plastic, and Shape Glass then you could shape like 80% of all the stu...

Once you get up to level 9 or so (Wish Economy), groups can travel to a planar or demi-planar hub world that actually does specialize in trade of magical goods. Security can focus on a single location to keep stockpiles of equipment and magic well protected, and there's enough people around that you...

I do seem to recall a rule to the effect of "A consumable magic item uses up one of your 8 item slots as long as it's active", but that may have been by someone else. It's mostly good though, because the instant duration spells tend to be damage and cures, both of which aren't particularly...

While we're on the subject, Tome doesn't quite solve the subject of potions/wands/scrolls/etc. If WBL was being used, should consumables like that just cost 10 times as much so that they take up a significant portion of character/party resources for at least as long as they're sitting available for ...

Alright, cool. I had a question about the Control [Material] spell, specifically the Control Metal version. The object resistance chart puts "alloy" at threshold 4 (which includes doors and stuff, right?), and any advanced processed item like a gun or vehicle at threshold 6. It seems like ...

I was wondering about the same thing. I put up my finalized character on Google Docs for anyone who's interested. My background is that I worked for Aztech all my life and I was very used to having the might of a MegaCorp at my back when I would interact with people (Magic and Business training, Cha...

 Should sorcerer casting be avoided? I'm using Frank's Bloodline Sorcerer idea where Sorcs get 3 automatic spells at each level (based on bloodline) and an extra spell known every time they level up. Clerics get two spells known at each level (from domains) and a spell every time they lev...

Yeah, I'd leave the non-scaling SoD spells just how they are. Stuff like Greater Magic Weapon, Greater Dispel Magic, Fireball, Scorching Ray, Cure Light Wounds, and so on would be the spells to have caps removed. As to the " spell slots only cast spells of the right level", I guess the ide...

Alright, so the large scape plan is that I'm taking 3e/3.5 stuff, focusing on a set of "almost generic classes" (called Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, and Sorcerer) and lots of class features to pick from (hopefully lots), trying to stick in the "HD = CR" thing for monsters, along with ...

Vancian casting and spell scaling caps

So, what's the deal with caps on DnD spells? It seems like they're really good for some things, but I guess a partial cap might do for the cases where stuff gets crazy out of hand (eg, Greater Consumptive Field, which gives an unlimited CL boost as you suck up more corpses). I was reading the 4e Psi...

I guess I'm looking to create a kind of guideline "At this level, these effects are appropriate" table. It'd be nice if it in some way meshed with the existing published stuff. This would be amazing, and I'm after the same sort of thing for use with the Generic Classes, because I think th...

The main reason I can see myself using Edge for isn't so much for spells, but for all the skill checks I'm called upon to make that I don't have any ranks in. Or maybe on drain resistance tests or something. I play a lot of nWoD and so I'm used to spending Willpower (out of my 8+) like water for +3 ...

Well, the guy we're probably gonna have GM won't show up until late the 24th, so we probably won't get to talk to him about gaming stuff until more like the 26th. New to shadowrun, my friends and I are making some characters for the "4E 20th anniversary" edition. One guy has played a lot of 3e shadowrun, and two of us haven't played shadowrun at all before. There's some other guys (including a potential alternate GM), but they're not around at the m...

Lokathor, where do people who murder other people with their hands, or tools fit in? They're just Killer Good with hands/tools, as in literally killing you good. Or, slicing open reality, or punching with a Wave Fist, or whatever. To an extent, I assume that if a power is level appropriate, it's le...
