Rare resources and Evil Wonders sounds like the most promising path to me. It might be a bit narrow, but I think you could make a reasonably good game where unpopular tyrants are generally at a disadvantage but can really shake things up if their pyramid and volcano base gives a monster bonus to bl...

Your monster classes should say something about what they do , not about what they are . Something like this: Blaster - creature which can trade mobility for more devastating ranged attacks. Ravager - creature which becomes more dangerous as they fight and get injured. Controller - Battlefield cont...

Both of these type revisions fall into the same basic trap, which is trying to fuck with 3e's type system at all . The thing is that type system was and is a dead end. There is no reason for Succubi to have comparable numbers of skill points to Howlers or even to Vrocks. Body type just isn't a good...

Do Clan powers have elemental affinities? If so, are they divided among all the elements or do clans as a whole have elemental affinities? Off the top of my head, the Carp should do more water to have more black rays of passive nonexistence. And to be more, you know, fishy . But they should still h...

Strangely, humans are filled with critical parts. -Crissa This is true. However, I understand that it's relatively difficult for a bullet to hit them because of the size of the wound channel (though with modern weapons it's easy to get a *lot* of wound channels, and with unmodern weapons you're unl...

There's a problem with someone getting slammed inna face with a four-pound chunk of edged (but not very sharp) steel is likely to be injured more than someone poked with a four-ounce sharpened stick? If I had to pick between those two options, I think I know which I'd prefer. How about a quarter-ou...

Rapid shot is a bad thing because it's such a no-brainer. There's almost no situation you wouldn't use it, it's so powerful every archer has to take it, and it incentives stationary full attacks which make the game boring. Furthermore, ranged attacks in Races of War are already doing just fine them...

I've often thought that books should just admit the power creep. Like, they should just errata all the old powers when they put out the next level of creep and power them up to match the new ones. So you might have a Complete Arcane-type book with new classes like Warlock, and then in the back you ...

Going off of the earlier model, this is just a rough kit for 3E. If anyone has some suggestions to gin it up or improve its functionality, please say so. I'm just hashing this one out quick and dirty, so if there are obviously abusive packages that you can see, let me know. I can see some potential...

There's also the unintended consequences of writing something so short and precise that it is very hard to understand, such as obfuscated C code. For example, in principle one could try writing an entire rpg game as just a set of compact mathematical formulas on several sheets of paper. I might arg...

I wonder if there could be a way to write 'to function points', as we do with code, and give a bonus for concise writing. That is, the outline identifies the items that are expected to be covered for the document to be complete, and rather than paying by the word, the rewards are based on simple *a...

As I understand it, Iron Armbands of Wang have bonuses of +2n (2, 4, 6) because that will always result in a change in ability score modifier. Wrong game. Iron Armbands are a 4e item that adds +2/+4/+6 damage. I withdraw the comment, then, didn't realize. I've managed to avoid getting much 4e on me...

Yeah. Leadership is provably broked. One level N character = CR N monster = EL N encounter. The EL system says that two Level N-2 characters = two CR N-2 monsters = EL N encounter. In other words, two cohorts is supposed to double your strength and basically make you another character on your own. ...

There's a whole separate problem, where a +1 relative bonus is in most cases too small to notice. There's a reason why Iron Armbands of Wang and similar items are available only in +2, +4, and +6.And that's because in a d20 world, +2 just feels a lot more noticeable than +1. So if you were going to...
