EDIT: completely failed to answer the question, starting over I do think that, with a greater focus on story-based progression, level ups should probably come at arbitrary points, and in a sandbox, conversely, XP should be procedural; for your freedom to matter, savvy choices should result in better...

Often times people will claim they are having fun when they play a game GMed by a friend.

Even if they're not.

Even if they're playing in a game that reportedly causes brain damage like Vampire: the Masquerade.

I read a Magic: The Gathering novel once. The main character at one point got banished to a wizard's island prison colony, where he kept all his summons while he wasn't using them. Luckily he wasn't a Pit Fiend user, so mostly the island ended up sectioned off so that the creatures who were particul...

XP makes sense when its tied to something explicit, like gold obtained. When it ends up becoming something like, X amount per adventure, or Y amount per session, and gets thrown out entirely for leveling everyone up via GM fiat because it's easier, then I am forced to wonder why the game even has XP...

Personally I find it faster to resolve D&D combat than to try to come up with a convincing argument as to whether an attack was Go Aggro, Seize By Force, or Acting Under Fire.

In-combat, I get to throw millions of knives at an alarming rate, summon illusions, and alter the flow of time. Out of combat, my wheelhouse is... cooking and cleaning. So yes, I can forgive a fight that drags on.

I wouldn't say 4e failed. Terrible post-launch support, incoherent splats and expansions, and a reliance on PC character builders with always-on DRM making it one of the least retro-playable editions. But "failed" is a very binary term that requires some threshold, some bar be clearly esta...

Mechanically, it resolves fairly similar to World of Darkness. In play, I find it starts to resemble indie concoctions like Burning Wheel or Dogs in the Vineyard, yet it predates them. The setting is very cool, and makes it easier for people who are more familiar with anime or Japanese video games t...

Put the players in quicksand, but don't tell them they feel muck around their feet or anything, rather, vary one word in the description of a pile of gems. Remilia learned this one from Gygax and Monard back when she was a wee lass of 379.

I would play a game about a tea party, where magic was involved. Especially if, in an ironic twist, we ran it RAW. How the fuck do you get working Internet in Gensokyo? You hook a modem into one of Yukari's modified yin-yang communication orbs. It doesn't get a smooth framerate on Netflix, but it w...
