Re: Chrono Cross is still one of the worst games ever.

Huh. Odd. I must have dabbled with so many JRPGs I confused CC's combat for some kind of "hit X at the right time, if dead-on you get a Crit, otherwise you miss" game that looked almost the same.

Re: Investigation in RPGs---Phonelobster just don't fucking bother.

My current take, an anti-Gygaxian opposite, is that rather than "roll your skill for pass/fail" all non-combat actions are instead based on time investment to a challenge. To investigate a small room or single page would be 1 minute. To do the same to an entire floor of rooms or chapter of...

Re: Short Rest, Long Rest, Round Rest, what does different schedules do for a game?

Ok. Rather than overall capability of a spell or range of options, a Night Magic user would have one of the two:

Easier to resist or dodge by at most -2 to DC or TN.
-1 damage dice or shorter duration debuff.

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

Just recommending damage values from my heartbreaker... It uses a scaling Action Point turn system, like PF2 on roids. Starting at L1 everyone gets 4 AP. Five-level increases grant 2 more AP but there is a standard capping of 4 AP for "mundanes" to any one turn, exceeded based on Trait sel...

Hmm. Interesting take on that.

I'll think on it and reply tomorrow, 5% battery on phone right now.

For now, your stance on additive rather than subtractive ability design does make sense.

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

1d4 per level is a LOT of d4s, I remember how much salt I get when I push for a combination of a small amount of dice with a set value added every level after, but if you're doing it every turn that's a lot of rolling. I'm not sure about advanced options limited to slot level rather than caster leve...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

Two opinions from me, one being "who can bring the dead to life" and "caster vs noncaster": The first, I am completely for healing spells restoring organic bodies, it's entirely within real medicine that someone technically "dead" is given surgery and a defib and bam, t...

Re: Short Rest, Long Rest, Round Rest, what does different schedules do for a game?

Rather than give "Night Magic" a boost when in darkness, a better implementation would be a slight reduction while exposed to light and NO boost otherwise; more of a limitation than a superpower. Verbal magic doesn't work in Silence areas and in stealth encounters could very well ruin a us...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

Funny how I hopped into this discussion of ability gating in RPGs when I had just discussed this topic with a relative earlier today. My take on it is that it should be about "compression", having Fire, Lightning, Ice magic at level 1 do level 1 things, but at level 11 it does level 11 thi...

Re: Short Rest, Long Rest, Round Rest, what does different schedules do for a game?

Well.uote if you can find or remember the title, please share asap! For my homebrew I've written up a dozen different "magic methods" that are automatically learned (1) with the first Spell acquired by a character. If the Mage class is added, the character may add another. All spell users ...

Re: Short Rest, Long Rest, Round Rest, what does different schedules do for a game?

Another random idea, what about having "The Winds of Magic" or whatever blow at different rates, so for a bit you're wandering round doing gritty realism and when that gets boring everybody is tossing around fireballs and running up walls (the fighters requiring power boosts of some sorts...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

What happens to Paladin tropes? Smite = either a feat, or divine spell series like in 5e Aura = feat, although in game effects it's a bit much since "add Charisma to all saves" is so abusable, at least in my decades of playing various Paladins Mount = There's A Spell For That. Or, some sup...

Re: [Phil Swift Voice] "THAT'S A LOTTA GODS"--The planes sure seem crowded...

I rationalized the RPG expression "belief shapes divine existence" in an opposite stance that "disbelief has quantifiable negating effects", because such individuals are literally believing to not believe. I had forgotten about the Athar, but that is very similar to my suggestion...

Re: Short Rest, Long Rest, Round Rest, what does different schedules do for a game?

Contrary to limiting daily resources even more as if devolution back to Level 1 D&D 1e was a good thing, I came to the conclusion that more varied-usage, unlimited and at-will or at least some sort of ritual for the more powerful effects is a better direction. However, a more sensible cap on how...

Re: Shadow of the Demon Lord

As with all homebrew publications I picked them like a bird of carrion does to what's left of the remains, mold a few mechanical or thematic concepts a bit, and add the thing to my own creations like some written form of a rubber band ball.

Re: Shadow of the Demon Lord

I've been meaning to make a Review of the RPG for years now. I might be one of the most well informed on this game in regards to its mechanics. I've been playing it since it came out on Kickstarter, followed its release schedule since, and have personally ran Three and a half Campaigns using pre-ma...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

I like that modular take, OgreBattle. I seem to recall multiple discussions of splitting classes into chunks rather than 1-20 progression, maybe Frank proposed it first, but it certainly beats Prestige optimization where you have subpar "entry feats" and Frankenstein's PC just to obtain th...

Emerald, ah my assumption, apologies. Yes it probably is regional differences. I had a discussion on a Facebook group a month ago about "Atheism, Agnosticism, Pantheism, and Polytheism/Pantheon worship" that naturally turned into a flamewar about 20 times over, but I did glean an idea from...

Re: Short Rest, Long Rest, Round Rest, what does different schedules do for a game?

I've been thinking about this ever since you, OgreBattle, asked me the same thing years ago when commenting on my second draft of the Domain heartbreaker. For years if playtesting (ok, a dozen times in 7 years) multiple players mentioned "It's nice that Health and Stamina recover entirely with ...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

Hmmm...that gives me another random idea. Do you need a paladin if you can have a cleric/fighter ? Likewise rangers and druids could be the same class but crossed with fighters or clerics. Assassins could likewise be fighter/thieves. I asked the same question to some friends 20 years ago. It's been...

Shadow of the Demon Lord

One of my brothers mentioned this recently so I asked him about the dice mechanics, theme, class/no-class, species, and he directed me to this summary.

It looks interesting.

Best wishes on your appointment, Koumei.

I'm seeing yet another therapist since I legit gave two of them burnout years ago by telling them about the abuse I endured as a kid, then had someone off and on for two years that asked "So how does that make you feel?" every five minutes.

Does anyone else feel like you've hit a roadblock in gaming, where you just can't be fucked learning new entire game systems, so for the rest of your life it's going to be "the handful of systems I know and like, and each time a system falls out of favour with everyone else, that's one fewer t...
