I hate to make unfair generalizations, so make of this what you will. My expert testimony is that I and many other women I know like the interpersonal aspect of RPGs. That is, not only talking to NPCs but importantly having relationships with other player characters, who are usually more fleshed out...

I agree, and have a whole shelf-full of GURPS source books. I'm more wondering about the rules themselves for GURPS vs. D20. What do you find disagreeable about the rules? I didn't meant to imply that I find the rules entirely disagreeable. There are a number of major problems, though. Skills are p...

That's the kind of in-universe logic that makes perfect sense, but is tricky for a game because allowing characters to pick up any amount of character upgrades just by paying for them is easily broken. That's why levels and character points exist. I'm not saying I don't like the idea, just that I'm ...

The real strength of GURPS is the encyclopedic sourcebooks for everything. The level of detail and accuracy, while not always the best thing for games, is fascinating. GURPS sourcebooks work great as generic supplements if you ignore the rules.

That comes standard with Tome classes. Don't leave home without it.

Let's put this thread in a slightly different and better direction (imho). Do we really want to deny the players and the base game system story powers? By that I mean fun stuff we hear others do in stories: Raise armies of the dead, create abberant clones of our enemies in underground pits, enchant...

I'm totally on board with making AoOs a special defender ability. It makes defenders feel special while not forcing everyone to stand still during combat.

I found SAGA pretty hilarious. The one time I played it, I was invited specifically to show the other players that their characters were not hot shit (I'd never touched the system, but he wanted them to not run around expecting to be able to kill everything). I ended literally every encounter with ...

Not important unless your game is intentionally silly. Critical hits can be used in decent ways if their effects aren't extreme, but very few games use them in a way that isn't stupid. Stuff like "Drop your sword on a fumble" or "Auto-success regardless of the DC on a critical success...

I'm actually in a 2E game currently (the DM is a reasonably cool guy, so it's not too bad), and we use 3d6 down the line, with the ability to swap one pair of attribute scores. If you want to play a special class like Paladin or Bard, you can set your scores at the minima for the class and roll the ...

Did you analyze Battleship Earth for deep meaning? No, the guy is a total hack. If I read Tolstoy or Hesse or Nathaniel Hawthorne, yeah, I'll look deeper because I feel they are worthy of study- JKR is not. It's simple as that. I have not found a fantasy or even Sci-Fi author that I found worthy of...

I just realized that CAN is kind of like a more generalized version of this: http://www.dnd-wiki.org/wiki/UA:Injury I'm not sure if I'm the only one who didn't realize that until just now. It's also kind of like the damage system used in Mutants and Masterminds. Is there any way to do this in which...

It really depends on what genre you're looking at. I've not got much experience with Dice Pool systems but I like Wushu. It's extremely Rules Lite, but it can be flavored for any genre. You increase your dicepool, literally, by adding more cool flourishes to your action. The only draw back is that ...

I wasn't asking for what it is; I said that I've read the threads. Exactly what it says in the title. I really liked the idea, but I don't see it discussed anymore.

Did it just die with TNE? I wasn't around for the original discussions (although I've read them), and "CAN" is a hard term to search for.
