I wouldn't rate bloodthirsters as equivalent to balors and pit fiends simply because they happen to look similar and fit similar organizational roles. It's probably best to think of it as a giant flying bruiser with some ritual magic and give it a cr based on the CRs of its context, probably in fhe ...

You're able to get decent levels of detail on 28mm models with today's hobbyist filament deposition printers if they're well tuned and the layer height math works out well - this was done on a $800 kit machine that would probably cost $1500 or so as a professional-looking turnkey product. The real p...

Rich Burlew actually has some fairly decent mechanical stuff on GitP - there's a fairly reasonable polymorph fix and some fighter feats that are a mix of fairly bullshit (add one to max dex and remove a point of armor check penalty for a specific armor type) and reasonably useful but would be somewh...

The Exsurgent virus is one of the big setting conceits. It's a software-nano-memetic-biological virus - get infected by any of those vectors and you start spreading it through all of them. IIRC it's either TITAN or alien in origin, but I don't think there were any clear official answers about it.

Are the battles in this thought experiment being played out under actual D&D rules, at least in terms of combat effectiveness? That'll make a big difference - some of the most effective stuff in D&D is really really dumb in terms of actual battlefield fighting. In particular, there's not rea...

The Shamus Young thing doesn't seem like it fits the goal here - it deals with gaining information as a secondary activity during play focused on something else, where a monster-hunting game wants to spend at least half its time in the research phase (which may involve some combat and social activit...

A photographer did a series on European traditional festival costumes. The link doesn't have a full gallery - there's additional bits in various articles on the web.

I'd be willing to put some time in. I've used LaTeX quite a bit for homework and stuff, but not for anything on this scale. Is there currently an awesometome repo set up anywhere? Windows Update already automatically pushes signed code updates. Auto-generated patches are way in the future, because security is Hard, but guaranteeing that your updates are coming from the person you think they're coming from is pretty well understood already. There's some issues with the current...

Evolutionary algorithms are a real thing, but they won't work on any crypto system worth using, because changing a single bit of your guess at the key causes a large and unpredictable change in the output - that's the whole point. Generally cryptosystems aren't actually as hard to break as the simpl...

Apparently Slitherine Strategies has a license for turn-based strategy games in the 40k universe, and some Danish company is making a Space Hulk game, but RTS/FPS/RPG/action licenses are up for grabs. Vigil (Darksiders 1 & 2) got hired en masse by Crytek, but I haven't seen anything about what t...

fast healing explicitly doesn't allow regrowing lost bodyparts, so it wouldn't work unless there's a spell to regrow body parts for undead (regenerate only applies to living creatures.) On the other hand, regeneration has a clause saying that attacks causing instant death only do so if they use a we...

I don't think we want the Lich King's Bank and Trust or the Assassin's Guild per se to be factions. We can have factions that everybody knows are just astroturfed by the Lich King or the Assassin's Guild or whoever, but that's a bit different. I also feel like there shouldn't really be The Paper - t...

Some numbers on gate travel: assuming Wolfram Alpha is right about walking speeds, there's a three foot separation between people going through, and a person-sized gate is being walked through two thirds of the time, you can put about 70000 people through per day. If they're each carrying 50 pounds ...

I don't really like that plan. Gates being linked into the hearts of stars doesn't feel like a D&D problem, and you're begging for the Union issue where there's a bunch of world-wrecking badasses sitting around as glorified town guards. I think gates should be paired and not swappable, to mainta...

Reforming really is a pain in the ass. It's not just about how far you move, it's also about getting into alignment with everybody else, making sure no one is sticking out in front, and getting everybody into step. I assume the "turn" is intended to represent turning the whole formation, n...
