It should also be noted that the Bite spells are hot garbage and people do not cast them. -Username17 Really, the main reason players will use a "Bite of the [Whatever]" spells: they want to play a furry, a werecreature, or some other form of skinshifter-themed spellcaster, and it's too m...

I was around seven when I had my first experiences with 2e D&D. However my early experiences in 1988 were of D&D being a purely verbally narrated and adjudicated experience. While even then I knew that D&D was played with figurines, as well there that were pages and dice involved; it wou...

Just out of curiosity, what about the d20 mechanics and it's wargaming routes make it inferior to the dice pool system used by AS/SR? It's far too binary in how it handles success/failure, heavily incentivizing "success", but you never feel like you care if you succeed by a lot or just hi...

No Hats for Conjuration? I am dissapoint. Mainly thinking about existing D&D spells, and mundane and magic items that are emblemic of those schools of magic. Erik's idea of Focuses, and Components, makes sense. For me, making them on seperate sub-lists might help to clarify if an item gets consu...

You're right Maglag, I must have been thinking about how humans are the only primates w/out penile bones. It's been years since I found out about that, and I must have misattributed it to mammals.

3rd edition does have better math than most. It's certainly very late on the list of games I would say has a bad and unbalanced math component. Does anyone have any other games on 3rd editions level? I'd be hesitant to put forth any that I'd consider as comprehensive and effective, as wargamey as t...

You might also want to mention Braunstein as the proto-example of tabletop roleplaying games, and roleplaying games in general. The sessions David Wesely ran directly inspired Dave Arneson into developing Blackmoor; which led Gary Gygax to cobble Chainmaile into (Original) Dungeons & Dragons. Yo...

You're still rolling multiple attacks, so that's still not good. Either have a single attack roll (like the Whirlwind [Combat] feat uses) applied to the AC of all applicable targets; or force everyone in the area of effect to make a Reflex save based off of your ranged attack bonus.

An other thing to consider in terms of penis sizes: the fact that humans are the only mammal that lacks a penile bone (this is the obliquely referenced "missing rib" that Adam 'gave up' in Genesis; and early Hominids likely lost it early on in Hominid evolution). I'm not sure, but humans m...

RE: PC's contributions Right now, I'm thinking that PC contributions should happen between large scale battles; not within them. As well, multiple large scale battles should be able to be resolved within a single session of regular RPG gameplay. The goal being that a large scale battle gets fought a...

Cooperative board games like Pandemic, or Arkham Horror, might also fit the bill of referee-free narrative building games. There's a ticking countdown whose speed isn't quite predictable; which keeps tension building fairly consistent throughout the game. Additionally, the game's challenge becomes h...

Zinegata, you are missing the entire point of the hype behind 4e. It wasn't that people wanted an edition touted as having solid math behind it because they loved math. And I suppose you missed all the conspiracy theories and how math was a public/official/guerilla talking point that yet somehow ne...

Further along the lines in terms of establishing the [Morale Value] of troops. I prefer After Sundown, because it's mechanics are easier for RPG novices to grok, and under certain lenses it's creature breakdowns allow one to categorize even the widely disparate mythologies of people on Earth. {[Mora...

Some thoughts from the Discord: Honestly, I'm not convinced of the "skirmish/shock/melee" turn order from Frank's current iteration. I think that a better method would be to have the "orders" [edit: as in deploymet/position of formations of troops; and their attack targets once t...

Fundamentally, the "parts" of the game that are used by the players have to result in the desired gameplay. If you are making, for example a monopoly-clone trying to depict the life experiences of a wolf; then the mechanics of the game, the choices that the players make, and the aspects of...
