If you want to introduce them to a simplified 3.5, try microlite. It is horrible, but it uses a similar engine. With my kid group, I just played wheel of time, and asked them what they wanted to be, and then made their characters for them giving them choices like, "Do you want better armour, or...

If more people get interested, we could have a Den SMAC multiplayer.
That would involve me dying horribly. Even after playing the game on and off for 10 years, I still play on Citizen.

I would suggest not having the people be leaders, or even high commanders of the specific factions. that causes the problems that you can never have them head out and try to deal with a problem like bandits raiding trade caravans or something. (Which, while it doesn't turn up in SMAC, should have.) ...

older grenades killed people with shrapnel, you could mimick that with a spring under a plate, and a glass top, with shards of metal inside. Cannons can be done with a spring in a tube. You have to wind it between each shot, so it would be less useful against infantry, but still make a good siege we...

My groups always just say MTP. When I have been a DM, I set the tables of DCs myself, and told people that they couldn't increase diplomacy beyond skill ranks and cha mod. This seems to work well enough, no one has complained yet. In my next project of elder scrolls ttrpg, I'm making it completely M...

I'm skeptical that Acrobatics and Athletics need/want to be different skills. Investigation, maybe? You've rolled Gather Info into speechcraft, so I suppose that includes Sense Motive as well - and searching for hidden stuff is Perception or Thieving? For other character concepts , things like gadg...

Dungeons and Draugr: Skill quantities

I'm working on writing a sort of 3.5 hack for a gaming group that I know. They are mostly people that are illiterate, and only play drunk, so the level of complexity cannot be particularly high. After reading through bakuhatsu gakuen, I decided that pools were better for skills than d20, but I'm goi...

Session 5 Last time, we were pretty close to a town at session end, so we head into the town. Rather than just letting us buy what we want, the DM decides that he needs to roleplay the buying experience for each of us, as if none of us have ever gone shopping before. This takes an hour, and we also...

Session 4 Had another game last night. Due to work, I turned up late. I log into the game, and the first thing I see is a 4 trolls surrounding the party. After asking a few questions, these are called "Troll Runts" by the DM, so I figure that it might be possible to defeat them with our l...

I am against compressing it to 10 levels. As it stands right now, it gets new and interesting things at every level, and they are all around the right level to be viable, but not overpowering.

Apart from general editing for wording and coma usage, it looks good to me.

In D&D, I actually give out level 2 at a time, or very occasionally 3 at once. Like PhoneLobster and Zaranthan, I peg them to story progress, mostly because I don't want the boss I wrote up to become irrelevant by the time the PCs reach them. I hand out multiple levels partly so that I can run ...

I like the concept of that a lot, since I don't have to worry about which encounters are taken on and beaten and all that shit and I can just say "ok, everyone get 1200 xp! Oh, and here's some minor story xp!" I'm curious what others think about it. I give 1k xp per session attended. No m...

I Accidentally Joined a Bearworlds Game

A few weeks ago, I decided to try playing a game on Roll20, not a tome game, just a game with random strangers. They said that they were open to homebrew, and even showed me a class that one person was using. Bloodmage, basically a nerfed wizard that can take con dmg to increase spells per day. Look...

Re: Race Revisions and Race Trait system

First off, the criticism of the skill bonuses is that they are random, not that they are inherently bad. +4 is too much for diplomacy, use magic device, and sometimes craft. Keep them, but think about who is going to take the set of ability and skills. sheep, you could give them intelligence skills ...

1. Dog: Gains an overall 1+ to Will saves, and prof. in any piercing weapon that is Martial or Simple. Each time that you see a person die, you gain a cumulative +1 to Fort and Will saves that stacks up to 2+. The effect lasts for a minute, though certain dramatic situations require more. If a part...

For the roleplaying aspect of a character I really like paladins in pretty much every game ever. (Although, in 3.5 I usually end up playing a cleric as a paladin.)

Normally, however, I try to make something where hitting it with a big stick is, at least sometimes, the right thing to do.

I would suggest writing the spells first. Then you have an actual clear written tier powers for what is happening. Start simple with a list of every thing you want magic to do, then you can tier the levels of spells, or make simpler versions that aren't as strong for lower level effects. Once you ha...
