Ah, the 80’s. My parents didn’t have a beef, but my mom said we had to be hush-hush around one of my aunts who thought D&D was satanic. I was more worried as a child that I would be punished for being an atheist. It freaked me out for a bit when I realized people really believed the stuff in ch...

Portland is not a good place to move to without a support system. Housing is expensive and jobs are meh. We'd have been priced out long ago if it weren't for the fact that my mom owns her house three blocks from us, and our landlords are drunks who have literally forgotten about things like rent in...

I don’t think you should split striker and defender sword powers and leave that up to player choice, like power attack or expertise is something all warriors can do in tome 3e I'm leaning in your direction on this. The powers themselves are role agnostic, and class features just modify them. Say yo...

Yeah Motherfuckin 4E N'Shit!

So I got this stupid idea for a D&D 4E inspired game with it's claws in my brain and it won't let go. I've been playing a lot of Final Fantasy Tactics lately. Here are my ideas, which hopefully don't fail on 1st principles: Basics Relatively low powered game compared to say, 3E. Combat is won th...

That sucks. Your two best courses of action are pretty much completely cut off. Normally, I'd say to talk to the DM as a group and explain why this is frustrating, in hopes that it stops. Failing that, I'd just, right in front of him, set up a new game with the other players in the exact same time ...

The Final Sentence pleased me, and pretty much what I or anyone in my group would've done the moment he "loudly taunted" after stealthing past. Seriously, once he said "naw" to leaving, why didn't you, or the Party simply just KO this guy, and/or Party vote for the DM to get rid...

Venting About Shitty Railroad GM

Alright I'll try to keep this succinct: The campaign starts with a couple small adventures around a small coastal village and the looming threat of some great apocalypse. Party successfully passes the adventures, but the apocalypse happens anyway. GM admits this outcome would have been inevitable no...

It occurs to me that you could run a pretty satisfying D&D campaign based entirely on adventures from old DuckTales episodes.

The 2017 reboot of Duck Tales. The cast is a little bloated, but otherwise, I'm loving it. I like that the art style is a throwback to the old Carl Barks comics.

Doing this has no noticeable effect on the complexity of turns for characters who don't move much anyway (such as casters), while those who would want to move around more (such as fighter types) are forced to choose between moving with a move action and buffing their attacks with a swift action, wh...

Starfinder is an interesting look at a possible direction for pathfinder 2, and it's characterized by a couple things: - fucking the economy sideways with item levels and 'this tall to ride' bullshit - basically failing at genre emulation -ditching iterative attacks (yay?) for a full attack that le...

D&D's standard/move/swift action economy works fine, but I think I would prefer to consolidate move and minor actions so that each character could do one big action and one small action per turn, as well as one reaction. Part of the reason 4E combat was such a long, tedious slough (besides HP bl...

To the extent that things like flanking exist at all in Fate, it's through the Create an Advantage action, which is incredibly broad. There is also a dedicated Defend action, although I'm not sure what that has to do with zones. Maybe you meant defending a chokepoint to prevent people from reaching...

I stumbled on this anime series called "The Reflection", which was created by Hiroshi Nagahama and Stan Lee. The show has an interesting premise, the characters have cool powers and the artwork is an amazing high contrast style that's like Japanese animators channeling Alex Toth. Also, it ...

I would prefer to have skills, but if you are talking about accept I definitely think you can run an old school game with four stats (STR/DEX/MIND/CHA, a refinement of the D&D six) and no skill system at all (just use stat checks, class features and player skill). Conversely, you could just hav...

What's the bare minimum amount of stats and skills that people will accept for a d&d type game? Like microlite 20 for example is a minimalist revision of d&d 3.x has 3 stats (strength, dexterity and mind) and 4 skills (physical, knowledge, communication and subterfuge). But this is probably ...

Well... most of that isn't doable without an save editor. Just... at all. First, the game doesn't let you dual class into a kit. You only get an option with the first class. Second, you can't fully specialize by level 3. You can only put 2 dots in specialization at first level, so you'll be getting...

I've been enjoying My Hero Academia. Sure it's bog standard shounen faire, but the animation is gorgeous, there hasn't been too much filler, and fights don't take more than two episodes to resolve. That said, they get one tournament arc. One. Anymore than that and I nope out immediately. I like that...
