Even if you could make an encounter 'objectively difficult', character builds vary so much that this objectively difficult encounter will be a wildly different difficulty for a druid then a monk. There are way to many factors in TTRPGs. Let's look a video games, can we have 'objective difficulty' in...

I don't see how any of this could possibly end well for Cyprus. This. No matter what the Cyprian banks do people have got to have lost confidence in them. As much as people like to rail against the big banks, western society needs the little banks for day to day things. It will also be interesting ...

I read the 'why does Castles and Cocks not already exist?' as sarcastic. Which makes the first preposition sarcastic too.

The way people talk it seems like any of us could at least do better than Mearls, why does Castles and Cocks not already exist? I think Bulmahn has done and will do a better job than Mearls. Considering my generally low opinion of Bulhman your argument that no one on here could do better than Mearl...

It's important to find out how lenient your MC will be with archetypes and multi-classing in Pathfinder. For instance dipping Vivisectionist Alchemist may be better than Rogue because you still get mutagen. Archetypes are also useful for trading out lame class features for slightly less lame class f...

First of all no one at Hasbro probably understands that D&D is separate from MTG. WotC is almost certainly turning a profit in a recession, as much as middle managers love to meddle I doubt they look too deeply into how WotC operates. The real question is why does no one at WotC seem to care abo...

After trying to make friends on several other gaming boards (video, roelplaying, or otherwise), I've come to the conclusion that The Den has the fewest assholes of any board I've been to, and the assholes that exist here aren't anywhere near as bad as the assholes elsewhere... Not surprising, I thi...

Most people seem to prefer being super special murder hobos. Getting back to your main question, there are mainly two ways to balance magic. The first is to give every class or archetype something fantastic, and for those fantastic things to be roughly equally useful. Which works if you can get your...

I've played in a few games where PC's varied a lot by level. Like a gap of more than 3 levels. It works if the MC balances things around the level of the most skillful players. Having a small spread (1-2) in levels is actually pretty normal in the games I've played in. It doesn't make much of a diff...

It's inevitable that there will be a new version of D&D. The IP is too valuable to just sit on. But as things drag on I'm wondering if Mearls will be the one to design it. From what I understand Mearl's primary skill is office politics and not game design, which explains how he is still employed...

When presented like this, it seems like a brave or foolish thing to do. I wouldn't want to be seen 'stealing' from Russian oligarchs.

You can't do the classic hero myth. This means that one person can't have some special power that makes him better than other people who are expected to go on adventures with him. This means that stories like Harry Potter where he is a wizard who is better than other wizards he adventures with just...

In Pathfinder atheist means you don't believe any of the gods are worth worshiping, or something similar. It makes a certain amount of sense, you can empirically prove the gods of Golarian. Speaking of replacements, Combat Wow, combat is bad in this. I want to say deadly, death comes along easily but it's more likely you'll be knocked unconscious and bleed out slowly. So it's deadly if your medic isn't around or botches the stabilize check. It is incredibly swingy though if one side do...

Character Stats and Character Creation Characters are made up of four basic parts, attributes, traits, skills and equipment. Attributes range from 1-8 with human average being a four. Attributes at 1-3 give a -1 to skill checks (by far the most common checks) while 7-8 gives +1 to skill checks, tha...

Anatomy of failed design : A Time of War

A Time of War (AToW for short) is the current version of Battletech's RPG system. Battletech a tabletop wargame with a sci-fi setting, the setting is loosely based on a dark ages Europe where most battles are resolved with 40 foot tall mechs fighting with guns with less range than civil war cannons....

So, they basically promised an alpha barely 1 year after they started working... not even Cryptic Studios works that fast if you ask me (and they have mastered the art of churning MMOs out), which confirms my suspicions that paizo is just re-furbishing one of the many cheap graphic engine knockoffs...

The trick that EA has been doing is that it has been moving actual useful computation onto its servers. It reminds me a little of Fallout 1, which is a good thing. The way creatures take damage makes me think they stray fairly far from any established set of Shadowrun TT rules though. I will second Leress that this does feel generic.
