Every time someone says "it's elegant," it seems like they really mean "it duplicates a much simpler mechanic, but does so in a very complicated way that makes it hard for the average gamer to calculate the odds." Actually the opposite is true. For TN 4, the equity for a single ...

There is/was an excellent sourcebook on the orc stronghold of Mount Gundabad. You know, The Hobbit, King Bolg? The book was published by ICE as part of their MERP series, but you can easiliy adapt it for different fantasy settings. It's got lots of political intrigue in it. A brutal and pragmatic ki...

Your D6, 1s Botch, 4+ Hits, Explode on two numbers scheme is on average the same as just giving people an equal number of coin flips - it's just more complicated. "(3-1)/(6-2)" reduces to "1/2". You're just adding fiddly bits to disguise the essential coin flippiness of the proc...

You could just do roll over and set the TNs to 20, 25, and 30 for success, super success, and superduper success. It would be about a million times easier to explain and use and do basically everything you claim to want to do with the system. -Username17 Not quite. If the target for a crit is 30, y...

Either way, rolling under certainly isn't so bad that it's unplayable without the symptoms of an end stage STD It's not roll-under that's so bad; it's repeatedly dividing target numbers that's a problem. There are two ways around that. One is to multiply the roll result if it's low enough to qualif...

THAC0 is shit because it's unnecessarily obscure What do those two smart fixes do? They put PC information on ONE side of the compare and DM information on the other! But roll-over already fucking does that, so what the fucking fuck have you fucking accomplished? Answer: fuck-all. You are now debat...

How is a difference less of a number than a sum? Dude! So you're saying that THAC0 is fine because the player can report that "they hit AC 3"? -Username17 I believe I mentioned here and there that I consider D&D a shit game whose existence cannot be explained by anything but the moron...

That is bullshit! Your argument is. What's to prevent the player from reporting "success by X before hidden mods"? 1. That is not how anyone plays it, <snip> Nobody? Nowhere in the whole wide world? I admire your confidence, if nothing else. 2. That's still shittier than reporting a numbe...

You're describing Lem's method in an unnecessarily complicated way. In case of hidden modifiers, the GM could just ask the stat being tested (if he doesn't have it anyway), apply the hidden modifier himself and let the player roll. No need to do it ass backwards. The player submits two numbers. One...

I've been tinkering with a 2d10 roll under system. Basic success at roll <= TN Good success at roll <= TN/2 Critical success at roll <= TN/3 This has the advantage of scaling meaningfully beyond the basic RNG range. A skill rating of 15 signifies a reasonable level of competence. It gives you 85% fo...

Haven't tried it in that function. I guess the 5 AoE is a problem when the SC is mixing it up with your troops as the SC (high armor, reinvigoration, maybe lifedrain) will generally fatigue a lot more slowly than your surrounding troops. Also, the 30 range makes it difficult to hit the guy while he'...

Dunno. Of course it depends on what you're up against. Stellar Cascades combines GREAT with skellispam and chaff against reinvigging sacreds, for example. The main benefit of Stellar Cascades is not that it kills the enemy, but that it reduces his attack and defense while increasing the chance of yo...

Question. I'm in a duel against LA Ulm (CBM) and looking for counters to Iron Darts/Blizzard. Are the missiles in those spells mundane? Does Arrow Fend help? Single target missiles (in the case of the spell listed, multiple effects, each creating a single target missile) should be effected by air s...

I'm pleasantly surprised about the strong liberal vibe here in the Den.

For a long time I'd been laboring under the misconception that since you're all assholes, you're very likely to be conservative as well.

So glad I was wrong. :p

Does this make sense politically? Last time I paid attention, catlicks were mostly a dem constituency, and most evangelicals (i.e. the GOP constituency) are positively hostile towards the Vatican.

Deplorable as the position of the Vatican towards contraception may be, I don't see them behind this.

Fuck, yeah. That's the problem with granting freedom of religion to missionary religions.

Originally, freedom of religion was intended as a restraint to such presumption.
