Resurrection The character can return life to someone who is dead. In order to work, the character must have access to the target's ghost and an “appropriate” body. The target's own body is appropriate, as is any other body of the same sex and build. Does the existing body need to be unoccupied/dead?

Well what we really need to do is set up something that magic can't do. Brainstorming in the spirit of this thread: Bridges There's a naked elf on the other side of the iron bridge, and the wizard... - Can't cross over running water - Is weakened by the presence of iron - Can't touch man-made struc...

Iron provides some protection against swords, and this doesn't break the game. Therefore garlic can provide some protection against spells without breaking the game. Glitterdust provides a way to see invisible creatures, and this doesn't break the game. Therefore salt can provide a way to see invisi...

Mentioned in passing in this Naruto episode:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/media-530552 ... puden-119/

"White Fang" does the 'heroic' thing by abandoning his mission to save his team mates, and as a result more people die, he is shamed by his clan, and he eventually kills himself.

A level two cleric can survive indefinately without water, because of Cure Light Wounds (heals, doesn't take a surge).

In a 5 vs 5 combat, a benefit-on-kill or a benefit-on-death isn't useless. I wasn't imagining carrying the benefits on to the next combat.

How about abilities that activate when you kill an enemy? Those things are more powerful in the hands of a PC than a monster. Conversely, abilities that activate when you die are more powerful in the hands of monsters. If they are available to both PCs and monsters, they need to be costed differently.

I don't see the Mephy description as being much of a personality flaw , though. They can have unlimited consequence-free sex. Obviously they're not going to have the same hangups about it as humans, because humans have STDs and unwanted pregnancy. Similarly, their stuff-giving behaviour strikes me a...

It's fairly easy to houserule an increase in the number of options characters have in 4e. I'm surprised that such an option hasn't made its way into Dragon/PHB 2 yet. Perhaps they are worried that everyone will pick the more complex option and then the game will be harder for newbies/dumb folks. Why...

And the 3e Fighter also has a bow, which constitutes a whole world of opportunity that the 4e Fighter basically does not have. Well, the 4e fighter certainly should have some form of ranged weapon. If they have secondary Dex they might pick up a bow, but otherwise they'll take some form of thrown w...

All DCs are essential game master fiat. Well, that was my point. Thanks for clarifying what you meant. I agree that 4e is better balanced than many games, which makes it easier to DM. The table of suggested DCs by level in the dmg is actually usable. Do you use the original version, or the errata'd...

How do you run 4e Diplomacy without DM fiat? The DCs are set by the DM.

All in all the example is highly contrived and revolves around false assumptions about the nature of medical treatment. Yes. One of the big reasons that I won't play 4e is because the lack of building blocks means that I can't assemble NPCs and monsters on the fly in my head during the game. I can run 3e without cards or notes just fine. I can't do that with 4e. This surprises me. When you try to create a 4e NPC/Monster ...

Public health care is massively and unrelentingly popular with the middle class. To ensure that rich people don't get better healthcare, you would need to ban private healthcare. That is unpopular with the middle class. What medical procedures actual simultaneously are acceptable to offer only to t...

Disclosure: I make a living on the administrative overheads of the current US system. The cost reductions you're talking about are basically unachievable in the US: France and Italy have 50% more doctors per person than what the US does. They don't appear overnight. In absolute terms that's roughly ...

The main thing I didn't like was the bit where magic items are cheaper (and thus, more available to monsters) because they have the "weakness" of "PCs can't take them out and use them afterwards". It doesn't work like that in 4e. Monsters don't have a magic item budget, so the D...

I guess that "disobey" is intended to apply to those who have a duty (in whatever sense) to obey the sitter. Otherwise the -3 modifier is next to meaningless. Ho hum.

Okay, while it's not literally true that NPCs can't use magic swords, the game is balanced in such a way so that NPCs are not supposed to start picking up magic swords. The example adventure in the DMG has an NPC with a magic staff. It doesn't modify the balance significantly, because it's a +1 bon...

Design goal: unified mechanic. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/drdd/20071005 They didn't achieve that fully because rolling for damage was too much of a sacred cow, but it was in the stated objectives. This article also explains that they are trying to "making design decisions that mak...
