Re: Investigation in RPGs---Phonelobster just don't fucking bother.
The person who writes/draws Kill 6 Billion Demons is working on an RPG called Icon that does something like that "different modes of play have different rules" thing, but in Icon, it's just Tactical Combat mode and Narrative Mode.

Re: Investigation in RPGs
But investigation doesn't really work the same way. At least outside of grilling suspects, I suppose. You need to know whether the PC can find a hidden thing, how well it's hidden, whether they can recognize that it's a clue, whether they can make connections, and so on. I'm just going to use this ...

Investigation in RPGs---Phonelobster just don't fucking bother.
Decided to split this off from the Play/Run Dichotomy thread I think an investigation mini game is probably more important than a social mini game. Honestly, we wring our hands about a social mini game, and how it can break down over people doing things they might realistically do in an actual socia...

Re: Play/Run Dichotomy?
Sounds like you're rather comfy in your comfort zone. If you really want something else, you should give it a try at putting in the work with the respective systems. Even if the game doesn't turn out the way you imagined it would, you'll still be rewarded with knowing how far away from your comfort...

Re: Play/Run Dichotomy?
That's definitely one of the big problems, and I'm honestly not sure. I haven't gotten to play investigation at a table, but I think the ideal way of handling investigation is that you always get something when you try to investigate. Success means you get the thing you were looking for, a near miss...

Re: Play/Run Dichotomy?
Yeah, it's weird. One of the things I love about 3.x D&D is that... I can make pretty much any character my heart desires given access to enough books. I've actually outlined on my RPG tumblr how to make Spinel from Steven Universe and Naota/Conti from FLCL in D&D. I've recently been thinkin...

Re: Play/Run Dichotomy?
I wouldn't say it's a play/imagine dichotomy, precisely, because I still often try to make these ideas work in D&D and basically "fall back" to dungeoncrawls because "I've got five days before the session and this isn't ready, so I guess I better put together a dungeoncrawl becaus...

Play/Run Dichotomy?
Yesterday driving home from work I reflected that... I think while I prefer to play (3.x) D&D, I think most of the stories I want to tell as an MC are just... not D&D stories? Like, broadly, I could make them work. Like, I could do a D&D adventure based on the Axeman of New Orleans, but ...

As someone who saw Answer the Call, and saw their current self in the new ghostbusters, and their past self in the villain... I might have a very specific enjoyment of that movie.

Re: Watch Ghostbusters: Afterlife
I mean, I don't think the viability of the SW brand has been harmed in any real, long term way. Disney is still printing money with it, and probably some of that is that "fans" have specific people to blame (Kathleen Kennedy if you're alt right, Abrahms if you're not). The fact that the va...

Eh, I subscribe to death of the author, and Aykroyd can kiss my ass. A bottle or two of Dan Aykroyd's Crystal Skull should get rid of those pesky "thinking" problems you're having. https://www.nydailynews.com/resizer/MwQnfYcd7Gbv4Q8NiPUGRsbI8hQ=/800x552/top/arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-tronc....

I mean, yes, you're right, TES was just the thing my friend mentioned when I asked for thoughts on the "astrological signs in place of race" idea on a server.

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered
And a friend pointed out to me that Elder Scrolls has done something like this pre-Skyrim (I don't know much TES lore, having started with Skyrim, which downgrades the constellations' importance to a bunch of minor bonuses you don't really give a shit about). So I feel pretty good about this idea, e...

Re: Watch Ghostbusters: Afterlife
I mean, if that's true, that's even more sad, because if they had just cut the winking references down to a couple of more subtle ones, and not treated the OGs like they were the fucking calvary*, Afterlife would have been that middle ground. I mean, you've got a new team where "white cis het m...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered
CMB/CMD is bullshit (maybe I just haven't played with it enough, but it feels like it just took the special attacks options of 3.x and made them more complicated while pretending to simplify them). That's not feels, that's fact. They took a great idea: make all the combat tricks use a unified bonus...

Since there are no dinosaurs extant there have been no studies on opioids on dinosaurs. (...) Since T-Rex is probably more closely related to birds than to reptiles Point of order- birds are dinosaurs , and they evolved from the theropods, the group which Tyrannosaurus was a part of. Think of T. re...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered
I think the problem is the games industry, not your brain. There's not really a lot of crunchy games with plenty of options coming out right now. Very much this. But hey, speed is nice. And maybe very much this too. I was very disappointed when I saw what rule engine was planned for Lancer. There i...

Re: Watch Ghostbusters: Afterlife
So, I saw Ghostbuster: Afterlife. It is very enjoyable. But I need Hollywood to either understand that "we're making this for the real fans!" doesn't mean they need to produce some pandering bullshit where every goddamned scene has this giant wink to the original and then the original char...

Re: Watch Ghostbusters: Afterlife
Hey, I'm in my 30s and I grew up watching Ghostbusters. Initially a handful of 80s cartoon episodes on tape, then the first movie a bit older (never actually got around to the second...), then Extreme Ghostbusters when I was ten to... I don't how long it actually ran in syndication, but ~13 I'd say....

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered
Huh. The last time I played a character in a 5e game that would have cared about AoOs was a *long* time ago (if ever?), so I guess I misremembered (though obviously I wasn't sure about that recollection). Mostly I play spellcasters who stay the fuck out of any situation where they'd get or provoke a...

I think that they were just a part of an era where manufactured outrages were less common, and people were broadly more ok with harmless irreverences like that. Remember, Red Devil fireworks were a thing for quite a while, and it is only in my lifetime that a big enough fuss was raised for the brand...

Gonna be honest I'd thought that satanists we're basically a cult for edgy libertarians myself not gonna lie. A friend of mine and his husband basically denounced it after some thing that happened. Maybe it was the Nazi stuff. I'll have to ask them. Thank you for subscribing to Satanism facts! Anto...
