Re: 5E: Summons still suck

Don't forget one-shot summons like FF style. Big AOE for one turn, with or without debuffs.

I like the proposal Harshax. Seems good, I'll suggest it to my DM and respond with results.

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

I apologize, that last post was slapped out in 3 minutes tops.

Still researching what D&D, PF, and about a dozen non-mainstream TTRPGs have done for "weapon traits", then I'll just cherrypick what is most simple and synergistic.

Numeric values for weapon sizes to determine weight, how fast it can be used (like a kind of Magic card First Strike vs normal speed), how strong someone has to be to use one-handed or even lift it. Build Points to allow one or more of B/P/S damage, effects, interaction with things like "Wide&q...

Re: Best Edition of Shadowrun?

Ah yes the different gradings of cyberware. Cyberdoc has parts if Runner has credit. The in-game downside to being a brain in an android is that every time the PC is injured, back to the shop for repairs they go. It's advantage vs weakness. But if you can see and Dodge bullets as well as take magnit...

Re: Chrono Cross is still one of the worst games ever.

Koumei, if anyone in all of TGD knows their retro games just from someone's vague description, it's you. Thank you. https://strategywiki.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Dragoon/Combat It is indeed LoD. I HATE that game. But Chrono Cross... wow... I had just completed FF7 after about 90 hours of struggle and ...

Re: Best Edition of Shadowrun?

Ah. Thank you. The forums I Googled on the subject of "how to I do ghost in the shell in Shadowrun?" were full of math, logic loops that end with "you can't", and Essence this-and-that, but you state otherwise. Funny how a friend went and allowed me to do just that back in the mi...

Re: Best Edition of Shadowrun?

How about the end-result of all scifi settings: giant Mecha, power armor, and GITS? The closest thing to "full conversion cyborgs" in SR are, from what I remember, cyberzombies, yet for whatever logic loop, you can "vat grow muscle replacements" but also not put your brain and sp...

Re: Best Edition of Shadowrun?

I must add- Initiative is better in 4e as well.

I started with 2e and a single round would easily take ten times longer then.

Re: Size Difference in RPGs

Protean covers the range of Kirby bosses so that's convenient Size is important for combat grids, tabletop base contact. How would you handle a big snake though, I don't like D&D's square horses but it's convenient Ok. I put this in the back of my mind and had a few dreams where, no joke this i...

Re: Size Difference in RPGs

Unlike 4e, the default assumption is that distance in almost all encounters will be a certain number of spaces between "frontline" members and the first round looks more like most Final Fantasy games more than a chess board. If melee combat is inevitable, a grid wouldn't even matter, but t...

Not All Angels. Just the most powerful ones. You know, wheels with eyes, etc. I'll make a thread later about how the hominid form became an interdimensional fad in the Domain lore and backstory after proto-humans invented the sharpened stone, like a fashion craze for supernatural beings that have be...

Re: Size Difference in RPGs

For reptile/lizard/saurian beasts and pretty much all beasts of the "beast tribe" it's not the genome or whatever that I'm planning on using as defining things like locomotive options (mostly pick one from biped, quadruped, serpent, and mix with hands, wings, or fins), how tough the skin i...

Re: Size Difference in RPGs

Not seeing much talk on the advantage of being a small creature. It sucks for the "default" medium size if they don't have any bonuses, but that's honestly something I can live with if it means big creatures are tough and bad at stealth while small creatures are hard to hit and good at st...

Re: Short Rest, Long Rest, Round Rest, what does different schedules do for a game?

Funny you mentioned "flanking" because after reading a dozen articles this winter of "D&D flanking and melee combat is stupid" I decided to alter it to the conditions of: Flanked (attacker is not directly observed with the Focus action nor are they Backed, lasts 1 turn or unt...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

Also, while we're discussing damage output, it brings to mind for me the 3e "Take 10" option "when not in danger", which was then applied through some class abilities to select skills, and again with the Tome Fighter ability to (I'd have to check the texts) spend a Focus to Take ...

Size Difference in RPGs

For 50 years the interaction between Sprites, Humans, and Ogres is difficult to consider numerically. 2e and older affected the damage dice for weapons hurting larger-than-human goes. In 3e it was stats all over the place, literally +8 strength, for being taller. This leaves no variation for "t...

Re: Short Rest, Long Rest, Round Rest, what does different schedules do for a game?

Well, there are materials and character "resource pools" to account for as well. Certain materials will have inherent Resist (value) to specific damage groups such as Steel being Resist (Cut, Poke, and Fire) but have an Integrity pool rather than Health, which does not "heal" wit...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

I'm not a fan of "take half damage" or even "deal half" as it creates math lag mid battle, I've observed it in action in ad&D, 3.x, and again in 5e.

IMHO reduction should be a static value that increases in chunks like how many 3e Fiends and outsiders have DR 5 or 10 or 15.

Re: Short Rest, Long Rest, Round Rest, what does different schedules do for a game?

I'm... Still working on that. For ability and damage supertypes I have: Physical (brute or finesse methods) Mental (intellect, emotion, social) also being types of damage to the Stamina pool, certain traits and situations grant Resist 5 every 5 levels. Solid damage (Bash, Cut, Poke) Energy damage (a...
