Re: [5E] Warlock Patron: The Pied Jester

Bard subclasses are referred to as colleges.

Clown college is a thing.

Re: [5E] Warlock Patron: The Pied Jester

I think getting auto advantage on attacks against anyone you Eldritch Blast with Art of Pies and Japes is a bit much. Warlocks taking Eldritch Blast and Agonizing Blast is pretty much the gold standard for a 5E warlock, and granting advantage seems like a bit much. Since you're already doling out V...

Re: [5E] Warlock Patron: The Pied Jester

RE: Art of Pies and Japes So, what do people think of this version? At 1st level, you gain proficiency in Acrobatics and Performance, and learn the Vicious Mockery and Conjure Pie and Seltzer (see Pied Jester Spells) cantrips, which counts as a warlock cantrip, but does not count against your number...

Re: [5E] Warlock Patron: The Pied Jester

Er.... ok, thinking about how vowels get pronounced in Japanese, you might be right on that count (because pied would be transliterated to paidu, or similar, in Japanese, so if piemon is a reference to pied, his Japanese name would be paidumon or something like that). But... "pied" refers ...

I have no idea who that it is. Are they a Jojo? The only Jokers I know are from Persona (and I wouldn't be able to recognize them, I just know there's a Persona character named Joker) and the DC Joker, and fuck him. He's barely a clown beyond the facepaint. edit: oh, it ...well, it will probably mak...

Re: [5E] Warlock Patron: The Pied Jester

Yes I did, the overall concept of the clown, in popular imagination. And more specifically, a warlock with that concept as a theme. Re: [5E] Warlock Patron: The Pied Jester

So you managed to not actually elaborate on what clown aesthetic you are trying to thematically recreate with this subclass. Yes I did, the overall concept of the clown, in popular imagination. And more specifically, a warlock with that concept as a theme. There isn't some platonic concept of the '...

Re: [5E] Warlock Patron: The Pied Jester

Create Food and Water should be a cantrip. The existence of an economy obsoletes it. The labour of 0th level peasants obsoletes it. This would be like comparing attack spells to Magic Missile in 3e to determine if they're underpowered. Fundamentally by pretending the spell system is the only thing ...

Re: [5E] Warlock Patron: The Pied Jester

Pratfall requires a cool down -- once per short or long rest. You're right. I was basing it on the Undead patron in Van Richten's and forgot to include a cool down. Dealing half damage back to attacker seems a little off theme to me, and could create some odd moments, especially for range attacks. ...

[5E] Warlock Patron: The Pied Jester

Ok, yes, I know. 5e, boo hiss. But, eh, it works to fill the game void if you have a group you like, and honestly, while I think the 5e warlock could use, say, one more spell slot overall, I do genuinely like the 5e warlock over the 3e one. And musing about clowns for something else yesterday made m...

Yes, good lord. I assume most Good PCs (or most PCs in games without silly alignment schemes) are anti-racist and pro-punching people they don't like. ie. People displaying blatant prejudice which implies someone should intervene. Even my evil characters are anti-racist. https://i.imgur.com/GrRTYKe...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

I'm OK with rpgs that do that, except D&D. Pf2 sort of de- emphasizes the scores, trying to get you to focus on just the modifier, and it bugs the shit out of me. Because Pf is just a version of D&D and that's not what D&D numbers mean. Fuck, I'd be more on board with them overhauling th...

Re: Handling Modern Sensibilities in a Western RPG

Well, if you're going alternate history already, it does give you license to come up with ... a new vocabulary of racism, I guess? It may not completely address the practical issues, but not using real world terms to portray real world attitudes might help a bit. You can also tweak some specifics to...

Re: [Phil Swift Voice] "THAT'S A LOTTA GODS"--The planes sure seem crowded...

Now, if when one says "make the gods unknowable" one also intends to remove all the planehopping and divinations and such to preserve the mystery against everyone in the setting, not just church-going commoners, then that could potentially work, but that's a lot more extensive a change th...

Re: [Phil Swift Voice] "THAT'S A LOTTA GODS"--The planes sure seem crowded...

Even in a D&D setting, deities are indistinguishable from other powerful outsiders. Just demoting them from 'god' to 'Titan' and let them claim a mantle and enslave a world (a la Star Gate SG-1) and you get everything you need form deities and nothing you don't. They're hardly "indistingui...

Re: [Phil Swift Voice] "THAT'S A LOTTA GODS"--The planes sure seem crowded...

Any time I see a thread like this I remain convinced that distant/non-provable Gods work best for every setting. Alas, dnd is meant to cater to Gygaxian players, and thus provides gods as the ultimate RPeen NPCs. In dnd-land there is no "Problem of Evil" because everyone knows their world...

Re: [Phil Swift Voice] "THAT'S A LOTTA GODS"--The planes sure seem crowded...

the Other solution seems to be that the same god is mantling different titles. So if you end up with like 17 different gods of Magic, then it's because it's all the same kat. Setting builders could have a "pantheon" of Endless-like Gaiman figures that taught, sired, or fuel the basic divi...

Re: yet another yet another stealth thread [Spellbound]

I get strong Skyrim vibes from this, but I'm not sure whether that's because it was actually any inspiration, or if that's just my reference point. Overall, it seems workable. Maybe a bit complex, but way more workable than some kind of stealth points combat-esque thing that's been posited before. H...

No, I just have depression, so my memory sucks. I also, as a human (if I must be...), reserve the right to change my mind, and feel differently about an idea one day than I do another.

So, yeah, as this discussion goes on, I think I am really tied to the idea that the artificer makes big permanent real magic items as their main shtick. But watching Adam Savage talk on Youtube, I'm starting to form this idea of something like the artificer, maybe named something else just because o...

Well, I didn't mean to say that "Odin never goes to see Osiris." Just that they're not divine roomies. Or even next door neighbors. I like the kind of ...mythological fanfic that has things like Hades, Hel and Anubis swapping stories and sharing uzo, mead and beer. Or, hell, Odin and Osiri...

Re: [Phil Swift Voice] "THAT'S A LOTTA GODS"--The planes sure seem crowded...

Well, I tend to get obsessed about detail, and I don't yet know what my players are doing for characters, save one who was talking about playing a gish sort of character. So when I look at creating this document my players can use as their primary source for the setting, I think about "well, if...
