Best Fluff

Post by Hieronymous Rex »

Not considering how powerful they are, what are the spells/feats/classes/gods/etc with the best flavor? I'll go through some of my favorites.

SRD Spells

Alter Self, Polymorph, Shapechange, etc: Shapeshifting has always, and will always be fun.

Animal Messenger, Dream: A bit more interesting than Missive or Sending.

Animal Trance: Adds to the Orphic image of bards and druids, even if it doesn't see much use.

Barkskin: Better image than Mage Armor.

Bestow Curse: The actual rules in the SRD aren't especially evocative, but the concept is there.

Black Tentacles: Wow, this spell is cool.

Blade Barrier, Prismatic Wall: Good image, and more complex effect than a simple wall.

Chain Lightning: I've always found this spell funny.

Changestaff: Oh, you've got a staff, I'm so afr-BY THE GODS.

Clone, Magic Jar: Comicbook immortality.

Contact Other Plane: Risk your sanity for information.

Creeping Doom: A much more disturbing way of killing someone than a SoD.

Disintegrate: Basically a damage spell, but turning your target to dust makes it more satisfying.

Imprisonment: "touch a creature, it is entombed in a state of suspended animation in a small sphere far beneath the surface of the earth."

Irresistable Dance, Hideous Laughter, Maze: Stylish ways of incapacitating people.

Gaseous Form, Meld into Stone, Ethereal Jaunt: Allows you to hide/escape/go places in an unusual way.

Explosive Runes, Symbol, etc:

Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion: Partially I like this spell just for the name.

Modify Memory: That's... pretty evil.

Move Earth:" Move earth moves dirt (clay, loam, sand), possibly collapsing embankments, moving hillocks, shifting dunes, and so forth."

Planar Binding: This is what every wizard wants to do.

Pyrotechnics, Repel [material], Reverse Gravity, Transmute X to Y, Telekinesis, Sympathetic Vibration: Examples of "alter your environment" abiltiies; Move Earth goes here too.

Reincarnate: Much stranger than resurrection.

Shadow Conjuration: Do whatever you want as long as no one is paying attention.

Rope Trick: Wierd, useful effect. I like how this is a low level spell.

Tree Stride, Transport Via Plants: A very Druidic method of teleportation.[/list]

A lot of PrCs fall under this in my opinion. They look cool by flavor, but the implementation leaves something to be desired.

I've always liked the Ghost Faced Killer PrC from Complete Adventurer: a Power-Attacking, invisible, ethereal assassin that can scare people to death with a brutal attack (and even people witnessing the attack).

I loved the roof runner from Traps & Treacheries. It was a crap PrC, and beyond that was limited to a single city.

But the idea of a rogue who knows the city so well that they can move through the rooftops faster than the streets and you know the city like it was a living thing strikes me as absolutely awesome.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

--The horror of Mario

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

Mother Cyst + the whole line of necrotic "x" spells have always been a favorite of mine.

I'm quite fond of a lot of [Evil] spells like Flensing and most of the spells from the BoVD.

A lot of them are also pretty good.

Robbypants, GFK is a PrC for someone who was obviously a rap fan, and specifically a wu-tang fan. Ghostface Killa being the name of a member of the wu-tang clan.

I honestly would like to believe that someone wrote up the class with an original thought in their head, but we can all just assume that all Ghostface Killas are hip-hop slinging ninjas. Possibly ninja racers.

Of course, GFK released his solo album Ironman on his own in the same year that the first scream movie was released. So, name attribution could be to the film, but GFK predates the scream film by at least 3 years with "Protect ya Neck" being a 1993 release.

The Gaming Den; where Mathematics are rigorously applied to Mythology.

While everyone's Philosophy is not in accord, that doesn't mean we're not on board.
