Music For Crying

Post by ...You Lost Me »

I've been perusing my music selection, and I've noticed that I'm low on songs for just sitting down and bawling my eyes out, so I was wondering if any of your lovely people had some sad music you could recommend to me.

No, we are all much too manly and tough for such things. Even the women. Take Koumei for instance. She may be fragile, like a porcelain doll, but she doesn't change her life one bit, even when she shatters a collar bone.

It's late so this list is the easy and predictable stuff:

Nick Cave "Weeping Song" Youtube Link

Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's "Hurt" Youtube Link

Leonard Cohen - entire albun of Various Positions - despite what American Idol would have you believe, there's more than just Hallelujah on there. Here's the beautiful end number about whether to give up or not

Concrete Blonde - Tommorrow Wendy an easy tear-jerker about a friend dying of AIDs.

Speaking of people dying of disease, Lou Reed's "Magic and Loss" is such genius of pain that I cannot listen to it.

Iggy Pop - Preliminaries. Dude has an artsy-french poet jazz side. Who Knew?

Damn near anything by Joy Divison or This Mortal Coil
"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

I'd agree that Leonard Cohen is probably on the short list of musicians who can can take a basic depression and turn it into actual thoughts of wrist-cutting, but I prefer his songs like A Thousand Kisses Deep.

Cash's cover of Hurt is also a defining song of the "depressing songs for depressed people" genre. You can literally hold the two versions of the song next to each other and say "here is a goth-punk poser, and here is the guy who actually suffered."

The band Garbage has has songs like Cup of Coffee.

That being said, when I'm actually bummed I listen to early Muse very loud. Notable songs are Thoughts of A Dying Atheist or Sing for Absolution.

Your results may vary.

I don't listen to sad music when feeling miserable. Or at all, these days, come to think of it. I don't go the other extreme and put on "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" or anything, don't get me wrong.

That said, back when I was building up the courage to kill myself with CO poisoning*, I did have a playlist of misery. The only one I can remember was Buy Now, Pay Later (Charlie 2) by The Whitlams, a song trilogy about former band member who killed himself because he was living in Sydney.

Oh wait. Also Komm Susser Todd.

*Some time before I ever joined the Den. And the meds kicked in just on the way back from buying the BBQ fuel. So I wasted good money on that fuel >:(

On the other hand, not dead, I suppose. But people may feel free to assume this means I failed to build up said courage.

It takes more to stare down that precipice and keep on going after having already decided that you might as well be dead. Maybe not "more courage", but certainly more.

Bizarrely, I listen to what are often incredibly cheerful songs if I feel sad. And then contemplate stabbing my eyes out. For whatever reason, the dissonance makes me more depressed.

Most Love Songs in my ears are better suited for crying than for being happy . .

A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

I take it you're single?

A few friends and I found this to be quite sad when single, and good for bringing tears.

Time and Comfortably Numb[/b], with honorable mention to Goodbye Cruel World (of course), Hey You, and Nobody Home .

The Blood is Love, for a more recent song.

It takes a lot to bang up my cheerful disposition, but the last couple of times I've been bummed, pulling this up on YouTube seemed appropriate.

Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie, Redemption version

I looked up the singer. He's only in his thirties.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

--The horror of Mario

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

That's a great one, but I prefer the version by the original artist

You want crying? I've got some songs I need to go through Vulcan exercises (and some mind numbing attempts to not listen to the lyrics I am singing) to keep me from collapsing into a total wreck. Take these songs with care, they are very effective.

Le Mis. Any good melody from that musical is sure to get you into a depressed crying state in no time flat.

Prayer of the Children by Bestor, has words, rhythm and harmony that gives you an emotional oine two punch. (Unfortunately I can't really google a google a good version at the mmoment.)

I like Thomas Tallis for this, more due to harmonic considerations than their subject matter. Velvet Underground's "After Hours" was my default for when a brown study would slip to black, and Mingus' "Goodbye, Porkpie Hat" is somewhere in between maudlin drinking and imagining myself as being in a noir film.

Two songs off of this album, "Sorry You're Sick" and "The Lost Ones" are tearjerkers. (Disclosure: I wrote this article.)
