So, Frank, since you're very good at writing classes, could you write a way to play a Mind Flayer/design a monster class for it? I was running a Tome game, and one player wanted to be a Mind Flayer.

Yes. Required information:
  • Does the player want to be a literal mindflayer, or just to be a character who uses Mindflayer powers?

  • What level range is the character supposed to be playable in?

  • What role is the player supposed to fill?

-Username17

We are currently level 8 in a Tome game. Said person wants to be one who stuns the enemies and typical battlefield control. Against undead and mindless creatures, he will Levitate and pick off with ranged attacks, or simply run and use ranged attacks against flying mindless creatures and undead.
He wants to be a literal Mindflayer; calculating, scheming, and could use others to help fill his goals. Plans on becoming a Wizard, as we do not use Psionics. Currently, Mind Flayers are unknown in the campaign world, and a guy with a squid-head is going to draw some stares. However, the majority of the campaign is in a coastal community, so most people would assume that he is a sea-dwelling race. Merfolk, Sahuagin, and other aquatic salt-water creatures come to the major port cities to trade.
Our group consists of no Paladins or self-righteous Clerics or zealots. The entire party is mercenary-minded; your skills count more than your ideology.

P.S Sorry that I may have forgotten, but could you also do a Triton, or is that asking too much?

Tritons are CR 2, and the only reason they are so is because of that spell-like ability. Just chop it off and they aren't even as good as a human, so give them something back and there you go.

6 natural armor, darkvision, a swim speed and +2 to Str, Con, Int and Cha, aren't as good as a a feat and an extra skill point? In the kind of campaign the Capn' is running, one where the PCs'll be near or in the water most of the time the Triton needs a few hit dice before it can gain class levels to keep things balanced. In a water-free campaign, especially at low levels, a Triton might be fine with significantly less hit dice to start them off with.

Whoops, I neglected to notice the natural armor bonus. That definitely makes a difference.

I was under the impression that monsters were built with the elite array, though.

In a water-free campaign, it's going to need a way to get a land speed faster than 5'.

For a mixed group, e.x. land-dwellers like Humans with aquatics like Merfolk, how early should Permanency+Water Breathing be available? I am planning on some deep-sea diving in underwater caves, and this ain't really viable at low enough levels.

Mind Flayers + Secret Santa = win. Now, Mind Flayers (time travelling related-to-human things) + scarves = Doctor Who.

That is a nice scarf.

Not to plug a source, but I think that Planescape site had something interesting concerning that...

Yep. They do.

This spell transforms an area of normal, everyday air, into something that those who know how can swim through as it it were water. It has no inconsitencies or alterations with normal air, save being slightly heavier to breathe, and feeling very humid.
Where this air is different is that to those who can swim, and who breathe water. This air can be breathed by those creatures, and swam in by them.

Within the area of this spell, creatures who usually can't breathe air can breathe. Creatures may also swim through affected air as if it were water. This means that not only can those characters with a Swim skill use it in these environs to take off from the ground, but also that creatures with a normal Swim movement rate may use it while in the affected air instead of walking or flopping around on the ground.

Large areas of Aqueous Air have been known to occur naturally, on occasion, and produce rather interesting hybrid ecosystems of aquatic, aerial, and land-based life

I had been tinkering on the idea of a set of ruins in the middle of a 'sea' of this stuff, and the ensure the party doesn't encounter anything to make it click until the NPC accompaniment (optimally a Jester) realizes he can scull through the air via the backstroke. In a room that has a lever placed quite high up. Because I have to amuse myself sometimes.

If you don't like the idea of shelling out magic items to let them breathe or just having an NPC cast the right spells on them, you *could* make the caves be full of aqueous air and make up some crap about them having a localized pocket of intense magic.

And make them fight sharks and giant squid on foot.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

No offense, but that seems pretty pointless for what he wants to do. You don't even get that spell until level 11. Alter self lets him do what he wants at level 3.

Permanency + Water Breathing is gonna need to be available pretty damn early for a mixed group with that sort of thing in mind to be that viable, or the DM will have to hand out Cloaks of the Manta Ray to everybody or something.

I had been thinking about taking that line about it occurring naturally and in massive quantities.

Maybe the aqueous air is a regional thing that occurs every so often. Natives don't notice the humidity that comes in it, and aquatic races like tritons can actually come up on land to trade (etc.)

Maybe you don't have to hand out the Cloaks of the Manta Ray or break out strange terrain.

It seems you could just say, "Here, pop this magic pill, you aren't going to be told the ingrediants. You'll be able to breathe in an aquatic environment for 4/12/24 hours, and the pressure isn't going to be an issue. Just make sure you're back up here before the effect ends."

And just say in this area that magic that lets you breathe in the drink is no big deal.

The shapechange thread is terrible. ArcTan making constant appeals to authority sucks really hard.

Seeker's stupid is at about the level I expect from him. He always makes some variation of that same argument.

Have you considered a cheaper, longer-lasting, or re-usable version of the Air Plant from Stormwrack?

You could go all Harry Potter crazy and call it Gillyweed. :)

Page 46 here is very interesting.

Cap'n has some good points and I agree for the most part.

In the bkdubs123's defense I would like to write that it's not every day when a professional RPG designer gives a blunt reaming of an honest (albeit misguided) effort. And while I'm not asking to sugarcoat the whole situation, please don't copypasta Frank's reviews over there any more.
Link back here with a statement or something similar to "Your work has been reviewed here:" and let them come on their own time.

Also, I get the feeling it won't bode well having Frank's name mentioned openly like that on the Wiz. Leress's account may be in jeopardy of flaming.

More hilarity from the Runelord thread:

He seems to be getting the idea then!

For the record, it is "Good news! It's a suppository".

Also, what is the problem about giving them all Rings of Waterbreathing? Hooray, you can breathe water now and have an adventure! It is all a manner of "you must be this tall to ride the NarWhale", just demand a simple errand for them, and a percentage of the profits in order to rent them some Rings. Then, when they lie about their profits, they can have a good time Bluffing, Diplomancing, Charming, and maybe even slaying the debt-collectors.

Alternate suggestions for why the characters can suddenly have an underwater adventure:

Dolphin/Narwhale/Mermaid cohorts!

The water is less dense than normal water because of high magic concentration.

Water is dispersing abnormally (find the source!). You may breathe it normally until you cure the problem.

A powerful wizard is cursing/blessing people with gills at bargain prices (or at random) because he hates overpopulation! Part of the adventure is finding the cure.

Johnny the Pirate down at the docks is known to take his crew to kidnap mermaids, he is suspected of having <Rings of Waterbreathing/mermaid cohorts/a scroll of the spell that gives gills/whatever>, stop his sick, twisted, mermaid-raping!

The natural creature of the area aid the character with air (characters suspect a druid is involved somehow).

Enchanted Tenser's Floating Disks allow for underwater transportation at a user's control, duration: 1 day

Magic pills make the characters breathe water as if it was air.

The Sahuagin Deep Seers have a vested interest in this adventure and enchant everyone with water-breathing, those who fail the save cannot breath air normally until cured (presumably after they have demonstrated themselves to the Deep Seers).

There is a semi-rare fish that latches onto the forearms of adventurers that allows filters water for them in exchange for 1 point of Con per day until they reach 8 Con.

All of you are bitten by Weredolphins/Weresharks! You gain a half-transformed state where you can breath water and get +2 Con / -2 Strength.

The Sea Monks have mastered a state of consciousness where they do not have to breathe, but it requires steady concentration. They are willing to teach it to you if you recover the ancient artifact lost among the depths. (Every time a character has to do sustained action, he must make a Concentration check, or deplete one of his Air Reserves. You have a number of Air Reserves equal to your level + your Con mod. Battles that last more than 5 rounds are considered to be sustained actions. It is a Move Action to refocus your Air Reserve as a DC 10 Concentration Check).

The Trident of the Sirens is known to give friendly party members the liberty to breathe, you have a decided edge in any in-party negotiations.

Sure, Permanent Water Breathing for everybody.
Oh, and Iameki's Swim Like A Fish feat; should it almost be required for said adventures, or is it merely a really good choice, like Power Attack for Barbarians in non-Tome D&D?
