I was going through a clickbait site regarding places that are basically inaccessible, and began to wiki each one:

Overall, it's sort of interesting how there's certain themes. Military installations, financial/information vaults, cultural heritage sites, areas contaminated by human action, but also areas made inaccessible due to wanting to preserve their remoteness and/or they're too dangerous to visit.
Which makes me think of how in After Sundown, the only two places you care about are "urban centres" or "untamed wilderness"; with rural and suburban areas being grey zones you have to travel through to reach where you really want to be.

I think I'll have to look at Gene Wolfe's books; lots of science-fantasy stuff there that looks interesting.

I'd second the Wolfe recommendations. His short fiction is also really good -- particularly The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories and Other Stories. I came across a mention of their "Fifth Head of Cerberus" novel, and began looking through their collected works. There's a very interesting similarity to Jack Vance's 'Dying Earth' setting (science fantasy; such as space/time travel); with elements that are reminiscent of Frank Herbert's 'Dune' (a far future where tech has collapsed in some ways, but progressed in others; and the nature of language/culture'd continued change isn't ignored).
